Installing RedHat 9 - part two

by Volker Weber

When I got up, CD #3 had finished downloading. Burn that. Insert. Hit OK. The install was finished in seconds.

But the job is not done yet. I have some strange problems with the Xserver config. Not video output in graphics mode. As RedHat by default boots into a graphical login, that would have been a showstopper for most folks. I now reset the runlevel to 3 and will try and fix this Xserver config later.

Have some work to do today. May be able to tackle this issue tonight. If you have any hints about what I should do: NVidia GeForce 2 MX, Sony SDM-M81

If you post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log and your /etc/X11/XF86Config or mail them to me, I might be able to help you.

Cheers

Pete

There you go: /var/log/XFree86.0.log and /etc/X11/XF86Config

I should add that I cannot control the screen while the Xserver is running. I cannot turn it off or switch to the analog port. I must assume that it is receiving really weird signals. When I crtl-alt-backspace out of the Xserver it will not show the text screen. The panel displays briefly that the signal is out of range (too fast to take notes). IIRC it says 492 Hz. Yowza.

As Stefan says: It is the cable. It is always the cable.

I connected the screen with an analog cable to the card and lo and hehold, that works. I am somewhat hesitant to keep it like this but at least I found out that the problem lies in this realm.

Note to self: Download and install Nvidia drivers.
