Audio streaming with Andromeda
by Volker Weber
Turnstyle explains how you can stream your iTunes library with Andromeda after Apple has dumbed down ithis capability:
Andromeda makes it easy to play music over your home LAN, corporate intranet, or the Web. A single PHP or ASP script turns your collection of files into a complete, sophisticted, streaming web site.
What I found more interesting in this post is how easily you can turn on PHP support in Mac OS X:
cd /etc/httpd
sudo apxs -e -a -n php4 libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
echo 'echo "AddType application/x-httpd-php .php" >> /etc/httpd/httpd.conf' | sudo sh -s

This works with any apache :) Doesn't make for a readable httpd-conf, however.
Most people wouldn't even know how to start reading the httpd.conf anyhow... :-)
I agree there. But the example shows that sometimes text based configuration files do have their advantages. Wouldn't want to do this with one - or more likely many - of HKLM/godknowswhere/billknowswhat/ entries. Let alone trying to describe for the majority of users how to do it :)
Oh, please don't get me wrong; there is nothing better than text-based configuration files, if only because they can be distributed/printed/mailed/etc. I just meant that most people have forgotten (or never learnt) how to use vi/emacs/notepad.exe and/or how to read.
Don't worry, I didn't get you wrong. It's just my bad command of the English language that caused this misunderstanding. I didn't want to oppose what you were saying. I just packed two things into one post. First, that I agree with you, second, that the real beauty isn't in "Mac OS X makes things easy" but instead it's in "text based configs make things easy". As long as you're able to a) read, b) understand and c) edit them, that is <g>.
