Little Snitch
by Volker Weber
Little Snitch is an application supervisor.
You start an application that tells you that a new version is available. You suddenly realize that with every start this application connects to the developer's server. Even statistics information about your computer may be sent this way. Little Snitch helps you avoid this situation.
Trojan horses - i.e. programs transmitting unconsciously data stored on your computer - can be detected by Little Snitch and prevented on the transmission of data.
If you have this running for a while you get really paranoid. :-)

Does anybody know a tool doing the same in the Gates-world?
Especially NetNewsWire gives me the creeps. I'm not sure yet, but as it looks, every 30 minutes or so it tries to connect to a broad range of different servers. ;-)
I suppose a good firewall would perform the same function in Windows. I once tried Zone Alarm but found its constant interruptions annoying.
a personal firewall will do that for you on Windows - try Kerio, it's ok and free for personal use.
So, is Office X phoning home? (A lot?)
:-)
I use Zonealarm to great effect. I even had a virus on my laptop (via email) that couldn't get out to the world at large thanks to Zone Alarm. Had it not been for that, I would have been causing a lot more havok than usual at work. It does prompt you for each new program, but it does quiet down after regular use for a few days to the point where you forget it's there.
I bought 5 serials for Little Snitch 1.2b3 (tiger compatible) for USD 100.00... I only ended up using 3 of them, however, so I have 2 that I don't need. These serials have been unused so they can fire up right away. I'm asking for only USD 15.00 per serial, they are USD 24.95 if you purchase them directly from the developer. I can accept Paypal and also put the ad up on eBay (I have +125 feedback) if you would like. Again, these are guaranteed to be authentic and will definitely work, I will send the original email from the developer with the serial. Please contact me at saliya.s at gmail.com....
