Apple teams up with BMW on iPod adapter

by Volker Weber

MacMinute reports:

Following up on our story earlier today regarding upcoming auto solutions for the iPod, MacMinute has obtained a two-page joint advertisement from Apple and BMW for a new iPod car adapter. The ad reads: "The first seamless integration of iPod and automobile. Connect with your music like never before. With the installation of an integrated adapter developed by BMW and Apple -- now available for the BMW 3 Series, X3 and Z4 -- you can control your iPod through the existing audio system and multi-function steering wheel.

While there are rumours that Apple is also working with other car makers, it should be noted that Steve Jobs is an outspoken BMW fan.

There is as well a smart for two cabrio - edition i-move

"Die limitierte edition i-move zieht alle Register um Design- und Technologiefans in ihren Bann zu ziehen. smart hat eigens für den Apple iPod eine Spezialkonsole mit Anbindung an das smart Audiosystem entwickelt."

the smart solution is ok, but as far as i can judge it, quite not as good as this new bmw thing:

smart can
- connect the ipod to the sound system
- charge the ipod
- hold the ipod

this new bmw thing seems to be capable of a lot more, it can all the things the smart solution can plus:
- control the ipod via steering wheel
- control the ipod via bmw oem radio
- (unconfirmed) show the contents of the ipod in the bmw nav/obc display

if this integration is only half as good as the bmw bluetooth phone kit, i.m gonna buy one :-) or better, let´s make it two .....

Aren't BMW's "boardcomputers" based on Windows CE?
