Lucky find

by Volker Weber

I shied away yesterday from spending even more money and buying a UV filter for lens protection. And suddenly it struck me that I may already have one. And indeed, I have an old Sigma FD Zoom with 67mm threading. Hah. $$s saved. :-)

And since my friends made fun of me for wrapping up the camera in a soft cloth I shall put this on my wish list for Christmas:

That is a Lowepro Zoom 1. Any better suggestions for a small bag that only holds the camera with lens hood attached? I could do without the extra zipper in the front.

Save yourself the bother and get a real camera bag. You'll be buying more lenses in a while and they'll never all fit in the little bag. Get a small dedicated backpack from Lowe or similar or something like this:-

for the traditional photographer.

Puhleeeze, no humongous links that do not wrap.

Let me introduce you to the TinyURL service. Your link as a TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/4y6r8.

I've got the Off Trail 1, keeps your hands and shoulder free while walking (or taking pictures for that matter). I've got my second lens in one of the side pockets and spare battery, memory cards as well as other stuff in the other. Works very well.

Now for the bag: Thank you for the suggestion. I do have a serious photo bag but I do not lug it around. At least I did not do today. I think I have at least three cases and bags that would hold a full collection of camera, flash and glas.

That is not what I want. I want the bare minimum.

Forgot to mention: You can also take the side pockets (lens cases to be precise) off if you're so inclined. And you still have your hands and shoulders free.

If you really want the bare minimum, take a look at Tatonka's Focus 2 (PDF, p. 4).
Nice marketing prose: „Ich will so bleiben, wie ich bin“, sagt die Kamera! „Du darfst“, sagen Focus 2+3.

I looked at exactly this bag today at Kleine Fluchten. Looks OK, but is fairly unusable. The bag has dome shaped lid, which opens towards your body and does not stay open. You need three hands to put the camera into the bag: one holds the bag, the second one hold the lid open (if you don't hold the bag, it follows the lid) and the third one but the camera in.

The Lowe design is very smart because it opens to the outside.

Hervorragend!

Forget the lens hood - use an "adaptable lens hood" instead - you can find one of these attached to the end of each arm.

I prefer to call this the poor man's lensehood. I have used it many times. ;-)

A lid that opens to the outside really makes sense. Wasn't able to find a bag with that feature five years ago when I bought my last camera bag.

Volker, I got the "TLZ1" (which boils down to being the same thing you picked, just as "grey import" ware).

Great bag.

Remember the rain- and hailstorm this year in summer?
I was out there in the city. Water was running down my whole body, filling up my shoes. Everyone and everything around and including me was totally soaked. My Tatonka daypack was a little wet on the inside around the zippers. I thought "sh*t", my EOS is history. But I was certainly amazed that the inside of the LowePro bag was dry as salt and the camera in best shape. I can only recommend LowePro stuff, so far having only good experiences with it.

What I certainly like about this sort of bags is, that I can put them on the shoulder strap of my day pack (You'll have a look at it on 01.02., I guess).

Regards,
/k
