MS working on Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

by Volker Weber

Scoble mirrors a statement on the IE blog:

Today at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.

First, some basics: we're committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

This is a major change of directions. MS did not mean to upgrade IE outside of Longhorn. But now that they are rapidly losing to Firefox they need to move.

Now, can anyone point me to the download of the full installer for Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 in german?

Wouldn't it be: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=de&FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6

No, Bruce. That is the incremental installer that pulls most components from the web. I need the 70+ meg full installer and burn it on a CD.

I don't remember the details, but I think it works as follows:

You go to the download page (possibly the one Bruce links to). You then start the download. At some point it asks if you want to install now or if you want to download to install later (or something like that). At that point you select the install later option and this will then download the full 70+ meg installer.

Something along those lines...

This might work for you:
ie6setup /T:(fullpath_directory_of_choice) /C

(see ie6setup /? for more).

I haven't tested it, but I think it's a solution for your task.

Stefan, thanks for downloading from MSDN for me. Take a look at the filesizes:

81838080 DE_IE60_SP1.exe
 3027720 IE6.0sp1-KB889669-Windows-2000-XP-x86-DEU.exe
 2778880 IE6.0sp1-KB889669-Windows-NT4sp6a-98-ME-x86-DEU.exe
 5187799 Firefox Setup 1.0.exe
 6490792 Thunderbird Setup 1.0.exe

I think, I will ask permission to upgrade the machine to Firefox and Thunderbird. :-)

Apart from getting it from msdn there is also the the option of getting & installing the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) which can be had from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/downloads/ieak6/ieak6sp1.mspx
this too does not contain all files, but it provides a method to download and package IE for later installation.

Shall I remember this for you?
