Need your input around Symbian smartphones

I need to write a report about interesting software for Series 60 phones like the Nokia 66xx and UIQ phones like the SonyEricsson P910. I know my way around the Palm platform and a little bit about the Windows devices, but Symbian is terra incognita for me. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
What is the must have software, where are the interesting places to download software, what is missing in those phones and needs improvement?
Hardware is not a problem. I will get some devices to test with.

I'd like to read your finished report. I currently own a Nokia 6600. So far I've only installed Nokia's PC Suite and Sensor app, plus a few themes within the post two years that I've owned the phone. Either I've been too busy or I haven't found an accessable (professional) site with valuable and productive applications to download and expand beyond the default the installed apps.

Ich hab seit gut anderthalb Jahren ein UIQ Gerät, zunächst ein P800 und seit ca. 3 Monaten ein P910i und würde mich Martin anschliessen, ich kenne auch einige HandyDay User, bin aber selbst keiner.
Ich möchte nicht auf meinen Tracker verzichten und für Vielreisende kann ich noch Métro und WorldMate empfehlen. Métro ist evtl. schon von der Palm Plattform bekannt und bietet "Routenplanung" für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr für weltweit über 250 Grossstädte. WorldMate hat einen Währungsrechner und Wetterinfos (beides über GPRS aktualisierbar) sowie Umrechnungshilfen für Kleidergrössen und etliche Einheiten wie Temperatur oder Längen/Distanzen.
Den Agile Messenger hab' ich auch mal 'ne zeitlang installiert gehabt, aber offen gestanden habe ich nie so recht Spass dran gefunden, mit dem Handy zu chatten. Das liegt zu einem Gutteil bestimmt auch an den GPRS Tarifen der letzten Zeit.
Was die Systemsoftware angeht, die Synchro Suite von SonyEricsson synchronisiert meinen Notes-Kalender, meine Notes-Mail und meinen Notes-Kalender recht stabil. Einzig wiederholende Kalendereinträge machen manchmal ein wenig Ärger. Das äussert sich so, dass nach einer gewissen Zeit einfach die Einträge aus dem Handy verschwinden. Ich habe die Vermutung, dass dies passiert, wenn das Parent Document des Eintrags aus dem zu synchronisierenden Zeitraum herausfällt, allerdings konnte ich das bisher aus Zeitgründen noch nicht en detail verifizieren.
An Deinen Ausführungen bin ich ebenfalls stark interessiert!
Meine Symbian - Historie ist Nokia 7650 , Communicator 9210i und jetzt SE P910i, mit dem ich sehr zufrieden bin.
Nutze Handy Day (unregelmäßig) und Handy Safe neben der Standardsoftware. Synchronisiere Kontakte, Kalender , Todo´s mit Notes, was mit den bereits oben genannten Einschränkungen ansonsten stressfrei funktioniert, habe aber auch noch keine tiefere Ursachenanalyse betrieben.

ich hab ein p900, was soweit ich erkennen kann in erster Linie nur einen gravierenden Nachteil hat: die Speichererweiterung (Sony Memorystick) ist auf 128MB beschränkt, während das p910i bis 512MB geht.
Der Datenaustausch mit dem PC klappt hervorragend, so dass ich z.B. als Fotograf Bilder mitnehmen kann und ständig dabei hab, auch wenn die große Präsentationsmappe mal nicht dabei ist.
Die MP3-Qualität ist gigantisch, d.h. man hat im Grunde genommen einen MP3-Player mit eingebaut (nur halt keine 10GB). Das mitgelieferte Headset ist sehr gut und auch mit Bluetooth headsets diverser Hersteller gab's keinen Schwierigkeiten.
Ergänzend zu Ragnar's Eintrag: die Synchronisation mit Notes funktioniert bei mir sehr gut, aber auch ich hab das Problem mit den verschwundenen Einträgen; nerviger ist für mi noch, dass Einzeltermine, die bei den Wiederholungsterminen gelöscht sind, im p900 trotzdem auftauchen. Beispiel: ich habe einen Eintrag um 09:00 für jeden Wochentag (nein, nicht 'aufstehen') den ich an Feiertagen aber in Notes entferne ... im p900 kommt er trotzdem.
Absolut supernervig ist aber noch, dass es bei Kalendereinträgen keine Funktion 'abbrechen' gibt. D.h. wenn ich Details zu einem Termin ansehen will und diesen dann wieder verlasse, wird er automatisch gespeichert (! - und damit neu synchronisiert), obwohl ich de facto nichts verändert habe.
Und noch eine nerviges Detail, das in den Palm Ergänzungsteilen besser gelöst ist: der Erinnerungszeitraum (snooze) ist beim p900 nicht einstellbar. D.h. wenn ich bei einem Alarm die Option 'später erinnern' wähle, dauert es nur ein paar Minuten (max. 5), bis es wieder bimmelt.
Bedauerlich bei der Sync-Software ist noch, dass das Journal nicht synchronisiert wird. Da haben sich bei mir im Lauf der Jahre viele gute Sachen angesammelt.
WorldMate ist genial! in der Pro-Variante bietet es sogar direkte Abfrage von Flügen, also kann man z.B. Verspätungen usw. direkt auf dem p900 abfragen :-)
Ebenfalls zur meiner Grundausstattung gehört mobi-systems.com Dictionary. Sehr umfangreich, gut erweiterbar und enthält das Oxford-Teil.
SMan darf ebenfalls nicht fehlen - Freeware analog TaskManager mit noch ein paar Schmankerln.
Ich hatte mal noch ein Tool (hab den Namen vergessen - bei Interesse aber rekonstruierbar), mit dem die Systemschrift verändert werden konnte (z.B. kleiner :-)
Die Softwerk-Jungs aus Fürth vertreiben und Supporten mit mNotes auch ein Sync-Tool, das demnächst wohl auch Symbian synchronisieren soll. Vielleicht behebt das ja o.a. Probleme.

Taking this occasion I started to look for something I tried a while ago but dumped due to its IE-only requirement:
It seems as if they have added Firefox support in the meantime. A good reason to check it out again.
Oh, what it does? It stores several kinds of PINs, passwords, access codes, etc. in an encrypted data store and allows the synchronization of that store to mobile devices where it can be accessed with a mobile client as well.
Thank you all. It is really helpful to get this kind of input from people who actually use the device! I will be reading a lot more and I hope that others will continue to just list the things they are using.
When I said, that I wanted to know what kind of improvements the phones need, I did not mean to ask for suggestions towards Symbian. I was more interested in software that improves the user experience. One of those things is the password store. I have something similar on the Treo as well.
ok - since you pointed it out again :-) ...
one really annoying point (thus, improvement urgently required) is, that the apps always go back to start.
Example: you are working in the calendar and a call comes in - the phone switches from calender to phone interface (which obviously is very smart). But when the call is over and I go back to the calendar, the software displays today's calendar ... what the heck was I doing before the call and when was that? ... even without Alzheimer it's at least time consuming and an unnecessary interruption ... the calendar is just an example. Same is true for every application.
