Nokia 9300 still going strong

by Volker Weber

After almost two weeks the 9300 (above left) still wins over the Treo 650 (middle), the Motorola RAZR (right) and the Nokia 6630 (not in this picture). It does have this "Is this your mobile or are you just happy to see me?" problem, but it wins with its full keyboard against 6630 and RAZR, and with stability against the Treo. I am waiting for Treo #2 to return from the keyboard repair and that might change the landscape again, because that also runs TomTom and a whole lot of other applications that I don't have for the 9300. I have returned the SonyEricsson P910i and the xda IIi a while ago. They both did not earn the editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award.

I keep recommending the RAZR as a small and stylish phone. Everything works well, with the notable exception of the address book that will only let you type the first character of the first name to locate an entry. Lots of scroll time from there. The Treo and the Nokias do much better in that respect, since you can type any part of the name. The 9300 also lets you type a part of the company name and it will filter according to the search hits.

Since I wrote about my first impressions almost two week ago, Agile Messenger has gone commercial. After seven days you need to either buy a subscription at $3/month or purchase with a onetime fee of $20. Your "Customer ID" is actually tied to the SIM-card, so you can use that license on a number of phones if you use the same SIM-card.

Frankly, I am very surprised that I like the 9300 so much. I had not expected that to happen.

Bin gerade wieder Fan vom Brothandy 6230i
sehr gute Ergonomie, gute Tasten, Radio, SDCards als Speichermedium, langer Standby, gute Cam, Kopfhöhrer mit Mikro

leider kein offenes GPRS Profil, sodass man einen Javamessenger nutzen könnte. Aber das ist eher ein Operatorproblem

Amazing, how huge the RAZR appears in comparison with the Treo...

Moritz, the RAZR is actually quite large. But it is very thin and that makes the difference. Being large gives it the benefit or a larger user interface. Nice large buttons and a very readable screen (on the inside).

I do think that the clamshell design is superior. You can hide the buttons on the inside so you don't need a key guard. The 9300 does not have this benefit since it is basically two things: A dumb phone on the outside, and a PDA/Smartphone on the inside. You still need to lock the outer keyboard. However going from the outside interface to the inside is done very well. During a phone conversation, it simple switches to conference mode (and back). So if somebody asks you whether you are free next Wednesday, you "put down the receiver", open the clamshell, open calendar and take a look. All while being able to talk and listen. You can do that on a Treo as well. But you first need to switch on the conference phone and then open the calendar. The 9300 does that automatically (and very naturally). When you close the clamshell, you are ready to put the phone to your ear again without fearing to blast your ears.

Hmm... I'm looking for a new phone to finally replace my age-old T39m and the 9300 seems to be just what I'm looking for. But the missing vibracall is a serious downside in my eyes. Don't you miss a bunch of calls every day, vowe?

Martin Switaiski, 2005-08-22 14:52

No, I don't. Nobody ever calls me anyway. :-)

Seriously, the 9300 has some very loud ringtones. I like "Polite" at 7/10. That emits a very loud beep, followed by a serious of beeps, increasing with each iteration. I never tried 10/10. Probably pops your ears.

Re: Nobody ever calls me anyway:

Received calls' duration: 01:51:07
Dialled calls' duration: 00:09:09

:-)

is that for a day? ;)

Samuel Adam, 2005-08-23 02:36

No, about a week or so.

hmm...well its a cool phone but there is no vibrater in this phone so while im travelling i miss a bunch of call that is really bad for me....
