Katrina disaster relief

I just received a plea for help from a fellow German who wants to donate to charity for disaster relief of hurricane Katrina. However, like many Germans he does not have a credit card. We don't actually need them here since we have a very well developed EC card system. Since all the charities he found only took donations by credit card he was stuck.

Esther did a quick google for "Katrina donation paypal" and came up with this link. If you have any other good sources with charities that accept donations via PayPal, please let me know in the comments. We have no ways to verify which organizations are good.

I don't understand why 'yourCharityOrganisationHere' doesn't use the Ebay Platform. They could make tons of 'BuyItNow'-Items and Ebay could even donate the money they usually take from the seller. I could buy & pay with paypal, in Germany it works with a regular checking account as far as I know.

Again, it's good to see support coming in from Europe - thanks a TON!!!

Another organization taking PayPal:

Just choose PayPal as the payment method.

“We’ve worked for 35 years to build capacity to respond to something like this. It will be a major test,” said Jim Burton, director of volunteer mobilization at the North American Mission Board (NAMB) in Alpharetta, Ga. “This is day three of the disaster, which is typically the most difficult day. We are beginning to understand the extent of the damage and the logistical challenges that lie ahead.”

As Katrina approached the Louisiana and Mississippi coastline earlier in the week, the American Red Cross requested Southern Baptists ready enough volunteers and services to feed 300,000 people a day. Because devastation from the hurricane is so widespread, it has been difficult for response teams to get into effected areas.

Unfortunately, there are already scammers trying to take advantage of the situation. Including on eBay.

On the other hand... the "why no Paypal?" is a good question. I just pitched it as an article to an editor at eWeek. If you're willing to be quoted ("I want to give money but I can't find a way to do it," etc.) send me a private message. Today, if possible; if eWEEK does the story I'm sure it'd happen fast.

The German Red Cross is now accepting donations for "Soforthilfe USA" via Lastschrift (automatic bank transfer). Thus it is now easy for Germans to donate without a credit card or PayPal.
