Syncing addresses and calendar entries against a Domino server

by Volker Weber

I have a question regarding syncing PIM data with Domino servers. EMail is covered with IMAP, directory with LDAP. But how do you sync calendar, tasks and addresses?

SyncML seems to be the synchronization protocol of choice for mobile devices. It is supported on a whole lot of Nokia phones, including but not limited to the the 62xx, 66xx, 68xx and 9xxx, as well as recent SonyEricsson phones and Windows Mobile devices. I believe you can also get SyncML software for the Palm Treo 650. SyncML will let you sync all your calendar, tasks and adresses between servers and mobile clients.

Then there is ActiveSync, Microsoft's choice. It is widely used on PC clients, but Exchange will also let you sync with ActiveSync against the server - over the air, if you want. This is again supported on a wide variety of devices. It comes with Windows Mobile out of the box. Nokia and Palm have licensed it. Palm will currently let you sync mail against the Exchange server with the included Versamail client.

Now how do you do this on Domino? I believe you cannot use either SyncML or ActiveSync. How would you do it? And also, please think a little bit beyond syncing mobile devices. You could sync PIM data against other applications with SyncML just as well.

And more specifically: Has anyone tried Sync4j?

Comments

imo sync4j has a connector for domino. We also wrote a sync4j-module which allows to sync SyncML aware devices with the PHPGroupware which should work also with all the clients available at the sync4j site.

Sync4j is a very well supported SyncML Serverimplementation. It uses JBoss or Tomcat as serverplatform.

One point to add re: Treo 650. VersaMail can sync mail directly with Domino over NRPC, albeit only via HotSync.

Haven't tried Sync4j...yet, but definitely looks useful. Thanks for the tip.

a simple link between iSync and Domino would suffice for me, I can´t convince my BOH of anything else anyway (don´t mess with the beast). But I´d love to be able to get the groupcalendar stuff downloaded again on my Mac, since the defunct LipSync (Kissworks wraps itself in silence, and Tiger is not supported). Duh.

Sybase iAnywhere's product "Pylon Anywhere" is the choice for server sync !!
Supports: IMAP, SyncML and there own high encrypted protocol.

More Informations about Pylon Anywhere and Testlicenses you can get here: Pylon Anywhere or german Informations here: Pylon Anywhere deutsch.

I've wanted to do this ever since I got my Mac. I have the feeling that we could use a Web Service in Domino 7 to publish the calender info in a format that iSync could use. I

I actually started asking around if anybody had tried this ... nobody had :o(

Maybe I'll give it a go in the next couple of weeks - I had a bit of time on my hands and continually playing xbox shouldn't be how I use it ;o)

I love to synchronize my Notes PIM data (incl. mail) with CommonTime's mNotes. The clue is that you just buy one reasonable priced license to perfectly synchronize:

a) Palm or PocketPC with Notes client
and/or (!)
b) Palm or PocketPC directly with Domino (every TCP/IP connection is supported)

They also claim to support Symbian (Sony/Ericsson P900/P910), but I did not test it actually.

I'm not a rep and don't work for the company, but I can second the vote for commontime. Use it all the time.

@ursus: YESSSS PLEASE!!!! Maybe the kissworks guy will even allow you to hack his code? Try seth@kissworks.com. As kissworks seems to be dead, why not...

Luck!
