How do you find out if Iraq is in civil war?

by Volker Weber

Ask George Bush.

Why ask him? Because he has been wrong every single time. WMD? Bush yes, reality no. Sadam behind 9/11? Bush yes, reality no. Mission accomplished? Bush yes, reality no. Torture by US troops? Bush no, reality yes. Pakistan free? Bush yes, reality no.

So, if Bush denies Iraq is in civil war, then it clearly is.

Is there a statute of limitations on the WMD thing? Sure Bush was wrong about WMD, but that was three years ago. Lots of people were wrong about WMD then.

The torture charge is also a red herring. I don't believe torture was ever systemic or sanctioned. That there have been isolated incidents of torture just proves war is a nasty business. No surprise there. If Bush believes US soldiers are by and large honorable and professional, I think he is absolutely right.

Was Bush wrong in thinking the citizens of Afghanistan and Iraq deserve to be free? I don't think so. He certainly was wrong about the strength of the Baathist and Islamist insurgency in Iraq, but that was a failure of imagination shared by many Americans. Three years ago, the troops were in fact welcomed by ordinary Iraqis. Few people realized then how much trouble the Baathists and Islamists would eventually cause.

Yes, I know. There are still 34%. ;-)

34% of what?
