Which of those two mounts would you rather want on your windshield? Especially without the device attached:
I think it is pretty clear that the TomTom screen mount on the left is much more refined than the Navman mount. Interestingly enough it also holds the device much better although it is smaller. If we assume that you leave the mount permanently attached to the screen, the Navman also has some very nasty sharp edges that you really don't want to have flying around in case of an accident.
This leads us to a second question: Which of those two devices is rather likely to be left behind in the car?
Now you have to think like a thief. If you see a TomTom mount attached to the screen, how likely is it that the owner actually took the device out of the car instead of putting it under the seat? The Navman has a much better shape. I can easily put it away in a pocket or a briefcase. The TomTom shape never fits anywhere. In this picture, the Navman looks much larger because it is in the front, but it isn't. The faceplate of both devices are about the same size. Only the TomTom is much thicker and oddly shaped.

To get away from thiefs, I always remove the mount from my windshield and I put it under my seat, and take the tomtom (ONE) with me.
Leaving the mount on the windfield is a call for problem, and I think it worth the effort to remove it and install it back every time.

Gestern in den Nachrichten in Deutschland kam ein Bericht in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ADAC, die vor solchen Zusatz-Geräten insofern warnen, dass sie bei einem Unfall zu geschossen werden können, wenn sie beispielsweise nicht richtig platziert sind und vom Airbag "weggeschossen" werden. Neben Navigationsgeräten waren das auch an Kopfstützen montierte Monitore.
Da ich selbst nichtmal ein Auto besitze, also auch nicht so schnell in den Genuss eines Navigationssystems komme - steht dazu etwas in der Anleitung oder dem Handbuch des Herstellers? In dem Beitrag war von einem Prüfsiegel die Rede - wird aber höchstens der TÜV sein, oder?
Beim Einbau solle man übrigens die Vertragswerkstatt aufsuchen und nach einer geeigneten Platzierung auf dem Amaturenbrett (bzgl. Airbag) fragen.
Von diesen Warnungen habe ich auch gehoert. Auch diese Kleiderbuegel die die Kopfstuetzen der Vordersitze sind fuer Mitfahrer im Fond sehr gefaehrlich.
Das Navi soll ja eigentlich an die Windschutzscheibe und ist damit weit weg vom Explosionsbereich eines Airbags. Der vom Fahrer ist im Lenkrad und kann rein physikalisch ein an der Windschutzscheibe montiertes Navi nicht katapultieren.
Bei der Beifahrerseite ist der Airbag im Prinzip weit genug weg, wenn die Navi-Halterung an der Windschutzscheibe befestigt wird.
Bei manchen Geraeten wird allerdings eine selbstklebende Kunststoffscheibe mitgeliefert, die dann wirklich am Armaturenbrett befestigt werden soll, falls die Windschutzscheibe ungeeignet ist. Fuer diesen Fall steht dann in der Bedienungsanleitung etwas ueber den Airbag drin. (so jedenfalls bei meinem Navi)
@Thomas: Viele Navis haben auch Fahrrad-Halterungen.
@Ingo: Für Motorräder gibt es sowas ja auch - aber ich fahr auch mal gerne nen Umweg, wenn die Landschaft schön ist. ;-)
Wenn es sich nicht um Mietfahrzeuge handelt, sondern um's eigene Auto, kann ich nur eine Autohalterung von Brodit empfehlen. Ich hatte mir solch eine Halterung für einen Audi A4 im Lüfterbereich überhalb der Mittelkonsole besorgt und bin damit sehr zufrieden. Navi hält sehr gut, die Windschutzscheibe bleibt frei und die Halterung fällt potentiellen Dieben auch nicht gleich auf. Das Kabel für die Stromversorgung (und ggfs. TMC-Antennenkabel) kann man id.R. auch geschickt verlegen, so dass es nicht stört.
