Interesting review of the Collax Business Server

by Volker Weber

Collax Business Server

Collax Business Server, formerly known as BenHur2, replaced my Domino Server eighteen months ago. It has been smooth sailing ever since. Now CRN compares it to Microsoft Small Business Server, a very successful product in the small business space:

With the release of Collax Business Server (CBS), Microsoft's Small Business Server 2003 (SBS) is starting to look a little like France in 1940, with Germany amassing troops on the border, readying invasion.

Nicht alles was hinkt, ist ein Vergleich.

Sounds interesting. Is it any different from - say - SME server? Or ClarkConnect?

Josef Prusa, 2006-09-01 12:29

I know neither of those. But I can tell you what CBS is: A full open source stack with a management interface.

The same are those two. AFAIK SME server is completely free including fixes, ClarkConnect looks like an alternative to CBS. The really interesting things are hard to find in any review. Like - can you change your password from your Win box? Can you pause or stop your print job from the Win tray?

I looked at the SME site, and this may indeed be an interesting solution. However, CBS seems to be more powerful. You don't only get ESMTP and Multidrop, but you can also collect by user from multiple accounts. Having said that, I find CBS very, very complex.

Agreed. But for a small shop the SME server could be good enough.
