Skype and Asterisk

by Volker Weber

Do you want to make SkypeOut calls from your Asterisk box? Would you like to have a Skype buddy on your regular phone's speed dial? Do you think it would be nice to be able to use the Skype network from your mobile phone, or even a telephone booth?

Look no further. We are proud to announce ChanSkype, the world's first Skype channel driver for the Asterisk Open Source PBX.

I don't think it would work for me. I use Skype for phone calls. But I use it a lot more for presence awareness, instant messaging and file transfer.

Stange: free-as-in-beer, or payware?

http://www.chanskype.com/ says " It's free. As in beer." whereas http://www.chanskype.com/buy clearly tells to pay for it: "Buy Chanskype now ! Personal license: US$ 19. Corporate Licenses: US$ 99 per license for up to 30 licenses".

The 3-minute demo is free as in free beer.

Looks cool. I can't wait to find out more as I am VERY into asterisk.

I'm severely underwhelmed by this. When I first saw the link I was very interested as it would mean that I can put Skype onto embedded linux devices such as OpenWRT. Now I find that Chanskype is simply a program which uses the published Skype API to control a full, running in the GUI Skype linux client. Thats great, but it could have been so much more...
