My father once taught me the best way to tell everybody that your business isn't going well: Cut back on Christmas expenses. No personal greeting cards, no wine, no small presents.
He retired before he ever got to see Christmas press release mail with animated GIFs downloaded from the Internet, sans personal salutation. Rest assured I am not blaming people who try to make something out of nothing.

My workplace hasn't given gifts, cards, booze in years...but are a very successful company. Blame the shareholders I say!
We've yet to resort to animated gifs and the like but many of our south east asian suppliers do it - hilerious!
Ups, had no time to even recognise, my company is going down....
No time for christmas cards due to work
No time for buying little presents due to work
Not even time to look for funny gifs...
But at least: Volker, I sent a new CD.
And that's hard work ;-)
Not companies are going down but Ebenezer Scrooge is advancing again.
