Apple iPhone on pre-order
by Volker Weber
Amazon.de takes the Apple iPhone on pre-order:

$499/599 as announced at MWSF is subsidized with a 2-years Cingular/AT&T contract. 49% voted for the iPhone. Still interested?

Well, you've asked what I WANT. What I'll buy will be a different story and will depend on all those things, Jobs didn't mention. It looks like the iPhone is a phone with a nice UI but in no way a smartphone. I think I'll prefer carrying my E61 + iPod to E61 + iPhone.
Bestellt. Danke für den Hinweis.
Actually, I thought the demo was pretty cool, but that's to be expected at the Steve-show. The fact that it won't let users install additional software, pretty much killed it for me.
The reasons given for that limitation are truly stupid.
According to Jobs, 'These are devices that need to work, and you can't do that if you load any software on them.'
So other Apples are apparently not devices that need to work?!
In a similar vein, Jobs said in a MSNBC article that, 'Cingular doesn't want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.'
Another stupid reason. Either all the other networks beside Cingular are constantly going down because some application messed up, or the guys at Cingular don't know what they're doing.
Sorry, Steve, but that's just dumb.
Anyway, I really like my E61, and it's browser is based on WebKit, just like Safari. I also have Google Maps. And lots of 3rd party software is available for it.
@Joerg: Here is another good answer to Jobs' statement
... I told you so. 1,000 US$ for the 8 GB one w/o subsidy. Could some mobile carrier here be intertested in selling it? Most probably and most welcome.
Dump the Blackberries and get something decent instead ;)
And PLEASE do something about iSyncing Lotus Notes data whoever reads this in IBM, finally
(that´s my personal "Carthago esse delendam")...
Please tell me, is it the same in the US with the mobile phones subsidized by the mobile providers to attract customers and getting the money back by high basic fees? In short form: is the 499/599 a subsidized price or not?
The iPhone is already number on @ Amazon :-)

People have to much money

Supplemental: i cannot believe the prices at Amazon - that would be really ridiculous especially with the Dollar-Euro exchange rate we have at the moment. It would not be the first time that Amazon has to correct the prices...
At amazon it says "Im Angebot von Amazon.de seit: 17. August 2004" and that's bull**** too. (Sometimes it is annoying, that I cannot edit my comments here - especially when it's evening and I didn't have much sleep lately ;-) - sorry for the three single comments, the belong all together)

Martin, probably Amazon doesn't have a real price yet and just guessed it very high to have a wide scope for later price cuts. Just for the attention they get for being the first to "sell" it in Germany.
