Service menu for the 4G iPod

by Volker Weber

Heiko has complained that his iPod no longer syncs with his PC, as has Stephan. Finally I got Stephan to hand me his iPod so I can try and fix it. First thing is to go to the service menu and run some tests, the most important one being an HDD scan. To get into the service menu you have to hold Menu and Select until it reboots. When the Apple logo appears you hold Select and Previous to get into the menu. This secret handshake is different for each iPod generation.

As it turns out, the iPod is in pretty good shape. It passes all tests with flying colors:

HDD Scan Passed

Then I connected it to the MacBook, reformatted the iPod to the Mac format and synced up the music. All working perfectly.

4G iPod in perfect shape

Conclusion: It is the PC that is not working. I have no idea how long Stephan wants to muck around with it, instead of biting the bullet and getting himself a Mac.

Thanks vowe!!

But: My iPod does not work anymore with 1 PC and 1 Notebook. Both Windows XP Prof., incl. all updates & patches.

Maybe the problem is the latest iTunes Software version 7.0.2.16? Just an idea.

And no: I did not save the last working iTunes installation archive ...

Dabei ist die Lösung so einfach. :-)

Deine Tipps bzgl. HDD scan zeigten keine "schlechten" Ergebnisse, jedoch brach der Sync Vorgang permanent ab....

Bin jetzt happy iMac & iPod user!!

Heiko

The iPod is the gateway drug to the Mac platform. Come Stephan, it'll make you feel good.

Mal schauen, ob die Selbstdiagnose was Brauchbares ergibt. Danke auf jeden Fall für den Tip!!! (Manchmal frage ich mich, woher Du all diese Tricks & Kniffe hast...)

Thanks to vowe: my early 2005 iPod 20GB is up & running again.

No, I did not buy an iBook :)

But dreaming of NO HASSLE NO FRILLS hard-/software again ...

So far, (Windows +) FireWire instead of (Windows +) USB was the solution.
Now guess who told me.

Connected => deleted all of vowe's fine music (which I didn't listen to ... maybe this was another mistake ;-) => restored / formatted, and Bingo: all 10 GB, abt. 2.500 pieces of MY own music are alive and well on my iPod.

No cure for my iPod. The "HD Scan" test passes, but the "HD R/W" test fails. If I connect the iPod to my PC, it hangs while trying to mount the USB device, no matter whether using USB or FireWire, no matter whether in regular mode or in disk mode. I guess this means to get a new hard drive. And you know what, for me there's not going to be a fruit logo on the case around the new hard drive.
