Alternate route to Orlando

by Volker Weber

There are no direct flights from Frankfurt to Orlando, save but one Condor flight which only operates on Fridays. Connecting in New York, Washington, Chicago or Atlanta always bears the risk that immigration or ridiculous security circus lets you miss the connecting flight. However, there is an interesting alternative, since you are flying over Iceland anyway. Just connect there. A small airport with easy connections.

This does not only work for Frankfurt but other European locations as well. Be aware that you are not landing in MCO but in Orlando/Sanford.

I flew IcelandAir from Glasgow to New York. Very nice. Small planes, very little inflight - but as your only on them for a few short hours, it doesnt matter. Oh and the airport is quite nice, so dont be afraid of a few hours layover.

Recommended.

AVOID London Heathrow, London Gatwick. Unless you like wearing the paper underwear they hand out when they lose your bags..

Nice idea, maybe i'll give it a try next time i'll fly to the US. Fortunately the last flight there was to Miami using a direct flight from Frankfurt. Much better than changing planes.

You can also do the same via Shannon airport in Ireland. There is even a US customs border post at this airport, so you can clear US immigration in Ireland and it becomes a "domestic" flight into the US, albeit from Ireland.

Cheap flights to Shannon from lots of places in Europe. Plenty of flights from Shannon to all over the US.

Unfortunately there are no direct flights from SNN to MCO. And within Germany, you can only connect to the backwoords airports like "Frankfurt"-Hahn.

Iceland Air has great offerings. Including an overnight stay on your way to the US with an unforgetable bath in the Blue Lagoon. I have been there, and its worth a visit.

For whatever reason, Iceland Air does not fly to the world's busiest airport (which is also the second biggest international gateway airport in the US). It's not a range issue (since they can obviously make it to MSP), so I wonder why not.

If you have some extra time on Iceland, make sure you book the trip to swim at the Blue Lagoon. Truely out of this world.
