and that's excatly the reason why video on the phone will never take off. People can't lie about their whereabouts anymore. (Not that that ever would be necessary....)

@Pietrjan - how about getting a call from someone in the bathroom? I had to wonder about the caller's sense of importance. You are so busy that you HAD to make that call while in the loo? And I HAD to listen to it? Unbelievable.

I'm not so sure that this will be a big issue in the long term. A lot of webcams already do face tracking and can insert realistic background images in the video feed. He could just select the "in bed" background before answering the call. ;-)


Videophones have been entirely possible fore than fifty years. The phone telcos reserved bandwidth for them (which was put to use as ISDN later).

The reason we don't have them? We don't want them.

Systems Architecture

This site runs on an Apache web server on top of the Linux operating system. The content is managed with MovableType 2.661 which is implemented in Perl. Last but not least the HTML code your browser sees is put together with PHP.
