word

Just had my first Microsoft Word crash on the Mac. The first one ever. Ten seconds after I saved my edits. That was lucky. Don't want to write the same stuff twice in the middle of the night.

Wow it seems that Word for Mac is not quite ready for prime time. :)

:-)

I'm writing a fairly large piece of document (in multiple smaller files thanks god) in Mac Word and I have given up to count how many times it has crashed on me... I have the auto save feature set to save every 5 minutes, so the losses are small...

Oh - and it's slow and sometimes the ENTER keys stop working and I have to stop and start word.... sigh

Would OpenOffice.org be a viable alternative for you?

Not for me. I am using only very few things that Word does. Spell check and grammar check. That's it. And I am very happy with those two features. Other than that it's just plain text with no formatting.

I recommend NeoOffice on the Mac - a nice customised version of Open Office that is much more Mac-like in operation.

It has the advantage over Mac Office of being a Universal binary and thus is much faster in operation and cutting out the Rosetta middleman...

Just curious Volker - why not one of OS X's excellent text editors (Textmate, SubEthaedit, BBEdit, Smultron, vim, emacs) in concert with the UNIX 'diction' command (diction isn't installed on OS X, but is available using Darwin Ports)?

Never tried that. Word works well for me.

it's just plain text with no formatting.

Just plain text? Goodness, what you need is this: best there is! :-)

Goodbye, cruel Word.
