Michael Sampson: "Hello, I'm an Angry PC"

by Volker Weber

A month ago Michael Sampson switched back to a PC and stated his reason: "Windows is better for business". What a difference a month makes:

You can't say that I didn't try, with all of the latest and greatest from Microsoft. In the final analysis, I have been less productive. Tasks have taken longer than they would have on the Mac. I have a machine I can't trust. And that can't go on. That reality is definitely NOT "better for business".

Before I opened the linked article, I was going to blame the workman. But seeing the example, it's very clearly bad tools.

Vista...shudder.

This isn't the best of all worlds (read Voltaire's "Candide" for the reason why).

The users demand Outlook, ERP-Software has only windows-client and allows only Outlook as mail-client. AutoCAD and nesting software only available for Windows. The same with the database and client for the stock server. We haven't yet found a Linux LDAP that works with our AD as we would like it to. Etc.

I surrendered.

I have switched from a PC to a MAC a few month ago. Mainly out of curiosity and because many colleauges are so enthusiastic about MACs and because I could not become friends with Vista.

A Mac Book has a lot of advantages over a PC, e.g.
• the superb magnetic power plug
• the multi-touch touchpad with two fingers scrolling, right click etc.

For someone who really utilizes the keyboard and shortcuts, the Mac has however a few disadvantages too. I am still missing these keys on the keyboard:
• Del Key
• Line End Key
• Pos1 / Home Key
• Page Up Key
• Page Down Key
I know all the shortcuts to emulate these keys, but I am still slower with the Mac keboard. Tasks like "selecting all text to the end of the line and deleting it" are much more complicated on a Mac then on a PC.

Window Behaviour
• Why in the world can I resize a window only on the bottom right corner?
Sometimes windows are to large to resize. E.g. open a large video with a resolution larger than the screenresolution, Quicktime will launch so big, that the bottom right corner is out of range (I know the workarounds).

Sadly the Mac has some of the same operating system problemes then the PC. Here are some I encountered:
• Shut Down / Restart Problems
• Finder Memory Leak (357 MB after 1 week)
• Wake Up problems after sleep

And some (not daily) tasks like editing your etc/hosts file are a hell more complicated than on a PC.

I will continue using the Mac as my only computer. I just do not believe the all the big promises from Mac users anymore...

Felix, I also found unlearning all the Windows chords to be the hardest when switching. And I am not going to answer all your points. Just one: delete to the end of the line by pressing shift-down and continue to type.

Danke, Dein Tipp geht bei mir auch, sind aber eben 3 Tasten - beim PC schaffe ich das mit 2 Tasten.
