If you look at Notes 8.5 with Eclipse and the side-panel, you can get all of the functionality shown in that picture - "Calendar at a glance", plugins for Lotus Connections Activities; Personal Quickr; etc.
One thing that can be said about Lotus Workplace, it gave the usability research and design teams the opportunity to really pay attention to how people work and what they need. It takes time to convert understanding into execution.

Though if you look at the new future of Lotus, LotusLives, R&D had little to do with it.
Before IBM Workplace Messaging was Remail. The work in that research project still resonates with IBM Lotus client technologies.
Looks very light and barebone. Not too bad.
