Tiny USB car charger

This made it quickly on my wishlist: a tiny USB charger that sits flush in your dashboard. As I understand, not yet in the stores, but should be Real Soon Now.

There's already such a product by Hama, which is sold for serveral months for about 14€.
The one from Belkin only adds an indicating light and has a nicer surface.

Excellent. Thanks for the heads-up Volker, I've been looking for something like that for ages.

Did not know that, Kai.

Hama "Pico": http://www.amazon.de/Hama-00014094-USB-Kfz-Ladegerät-Pico/dp/B001AFUIQK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=ce-de&qid=1240332384&sr=8-5

Also kein rein/raus mehr.

Will it use power if the car is off and no device is plugged into it, I wonder? Nice find.

will it work with Blackberrys ?

Reichelt hat das "Hama" auch. Danke, Rolf.

Do we follow this through to the logical conclusion? In the future, all cars will have USB power ports as standard equipment, and we need to go to Belkin for a USB-powered cigarette lighter adapter?

d'oh, forgot to switch to english:

cheap USB port charger DIY: order a 5 volt regulator IC 7805 ($.25 at radio shack), solder it all together connecting the positive from the cigarette lighter (12V) to the 7805 input pin, the positive usb pin to the 7805 output pin (5V), and the negative (-) from cigarette lighter and the usb ground pin to the 7805 ground pin. then install the usb socket directly in the dash with a "dremel" tool.

Unfortunately it's still for the cigarette lighter port - I'd wish this were really integrated into the dashboard. Car manufacturers could easily provide that for less than $5 in every car - I wonder when we'll see that...

You already do. Of course it goes beyond simple charging. Those USB plugs let you mount thumb drives and play them over the radio. Plug in your BlackBerry and play its music over the stereo and charge it at the same time.

Frank, i guess we will see that in every new car as soon as there are radio controlled clocks in every car.

eg. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19561
You can get things like that at all times at dealextreme. For round about $6 is is clear that this will work several times, but those gadget you need not all the time...
