Official Google Blog: Releasing the Chromium OS open source project

by Volker Weber

In July we announced that we were working on Google Chrome OS, an open source operating system for people who spend most of their time on the web.

Today we are open-sourcing the project as Chromium OS. We are doing this early, a year before Google Chrome OS will be ready for users, because we are eager to engage with partners, the open source community and developers

I don't. But we'll see how the finished thing turns out.

Although its on a VM, there is a step by step guide here. Caveats - not tried it myself (I've only just bootcamped the Mac for Windows 7 - one OS at a time...), needs a torrent download and as the post explains, no responsibility for the veracity of the torrent.

I want it on my 500 Mhz Thinkpad 600x that is languishing on the workbench...

gdgt.com has posted a VM image on their site - I'm considering that enough blessing to give it a try.

@"I want this on my netbook.": Why? What is Chrome OS going to bring you?

AFAIK Chrome OS is a web browser only OS that is going to 100% link you to Google and it's services.

You mean Google services like Facebook and Yahoo Mail?

Of course there's a ton of other services on the web which are not from Google. But if I'm honest, today I couldn't do all my work with just web tools. That may be, of course, because my work environment is not made to be used web-based only. Of course there are web-based office productivity tools that could support me in many of my daily duties. But if you ask me, we're still years away from that being a workable alternative. An interesting path to the future though, at least for personal use and some companies as well.

Shall I remember this for you?
