Surface 3 with Windows 10

I love Surface 3. No fan, feels like a proper tablet, can be propped up with its kickstand in three different positions. Can act as a full PC with its keyboard attached. Has MicroUSB power, a proper USB-port for attaching peripherals and DisplayPort for those odd presentations. It was all very good, but it was missing the proper software.
Windows 10 changes that. You can run it as a PC with a Start menu if you like. I prefer the tablet mode that I already loved on the original Surface RT. That had this odd desktop which only ran Microsoft Office, and was not very good at it. Now I have Word Mobile, touch friendly and with all the features I would ever need. Plus, it syncs nicely into OneDrive, and I can pick up my work from iPhone, from the Mac, basically from everywhere. This feels just right.
And this thing has proper multitasking. I can run a couple of programs in the background without every worrying if they are still working. Uploading a gigabyte of video to sftp? Piece of cake. And while it uploads I can work in Word. Mind you, I am not using desktop windows. Everything is full screen, in tablet mode. And swiping from the left gives me an overview of all apps that running. Not suspended in the background. Running.

So all is good now? You were sceptic some weeks ago, had it changed in between?
I really would love that machine, but then I will loved the new Lumia flagship and the band version two as well 😉
Mann, das ist wirklich eine super Maschine zum Arbeiten, alleine schon mit dem Stift. Muss echt mal schauen, ob ich mir eines privat hole. Und Scheffin soll jetzt mal den Surface Pro 3 updaten!! :D

Hubert, keine Bedenken. Windows 10 hat Surface noch besser gemacht.
Ich bin da ganz bei Frank, wenn es jetzt noch mit LTE verfügbar wäre...
Außerdem, Volker, wie hältst Du es mit der IT Sicherheit? Ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass das ein Vorteil war, den Du beim Lumia 2520 genannt hattest: kein Win32 Legacy mit all der Malware... die kommt jetzt doch wieder, nicht?
Ich habe gehofft, dass Microsoft ein Windows ohne Win32 etablieren kann. Das ist gründlich daneben gegangen. Diese Alternative ist "erst mal" gestorben.
Da fragt man sich, warum Multitasking bei Windows Phone bzw. Windows 10 mobile so ausgebremst wird. Wegen des Akkus, ist klar. Aber auch dort gibt es Apps, die sinnvoll im Hintergrund laufen sollten: Sprachrekorder, Navi-App, Apps die gerade etwas hoch oder herunterladen.
Die Office Apps hätte ich jetzt gerne auf dem Nokia Lumia 2520... sind die für Windows RT nun auch verfügbar? #kriegjanixmehrmit
Nein. Aus 35000 ft Höhe betrachtet: Office Mobile UWA braucht Windows 10. Warum man das nicht zurück auf WRT portieren kann? Keine Ahnung. Ich nehme an, das interessiert bei Microsoft einfach kein Schwein. Oder schlimmer: dann würde es auf Windows 8.1 auch laufen, und das will keiner.
Also von der Runtime her müsste es gehen. Aber: laut Store haben sie es einfach nicht für ARM-Prozessoren kompiliert. Sie wollen diese Architektur einfach nicht mehr unterstützen ...
Geht's denn auf 8.1? Selbe Runtime, aber Intel.
Nope. Wird im Store gar nicht gefunden.
Ich kämpfe immer noch mit der OneDrive-Integration in Windows 10. 110 GB Fotos möchte ich ungern auf das Tablet syncen, finde aber keine andere Möglichkeit, auf die online abgelegten Fotos zuzugreifen - einmal abgesehen vom Webinterface. Das schien mit der OneDrive App auf Win 8.1 deutlich besser gelöst.
Volker, did you use a special Windows 10 realease for your Surface 3 or did you use the same ISO you used for your Yoga 3 Pro?
Surface is on the fast track Insider program. That was already on Windows 10 weeks before the release. And suffered through some driver issues.
