Living in a bubble

Ed announced this competition. I stumbled over the rules:

This is your chance as an IBM Business Partner, IBM Champion or OpenNTF contributor to show what you can do with IBM's Collaboration platform and IBM Bluemix.

I wasn't really sure whether IBM wanted to exclude new talent or not. So I asked. This is what I got:

Um... wow.

While I'm glad to see IBM trying to promote application development, IMO they have this completely backwards. They are trying to get ICS developers to use more of the BlueMix/Cognitive platform, when they need to do the exact opposite. BlueMix already has a vibrant ecosystem, it's ICS's that is dwindling. The contest should be about getting BlueMix developers to add ICS features (likes, comments, profile cards, file sharing, chat, activity streams, etc.) to Cognitive apps.

Good observation, Alan. Given Alan's role, I think ICS is just trying to engage BPs. That is too short a throw.

Alan, I agree with you 1000%. The core problem ICS has is that they have nothing on the bluemix platform for white space development. You aren't going to pick the xsp (xpages) runtime on Bluemix when you have mongo, cloudant, node.js, and all the other stuff available. Especially with no public roadmap for the development platform and a development environment that just turns devs off.
