There is a new version
by Volker Weber
There is a new version of eDonkey2K, one of the most popular file sharing clients (Windows, Linux, closed source; see review). eDonkey downloads files from multiple users who have them simulateneously, even when these other users are still downloading the file themselves. This makes it possible to get astonishing transfer rates, especially for popular, large files. Because of its automatic resuming even between sessions, you don't have to worry much about broken downloads -- only about files that never appear online again

5% of the world's population live in a country that also has 30% of the world's prisoners. With a male population of 138 million and more than 2 million prison inmates, 94% of the them male, one in 73 men is behind bars. 30 million boys are 14 years and younger. If we do not count them, the rate is one in 57. Another dangerous criminal has just been termporarily arrested and "is facing up to 20 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines".

by Volker Weber
Stolen from kottke.org - home of fine hypertext products: If you do any sort of Web or software development, I would encourage you to read The Mythical Man-Month by Frederick Brooks. It's over 25 years old and most of the technology it talks about is beyond obsolete, but that's OK because it's not a book about technology...it's about people and management and information flow and all the other non-technological aspects of software development. Brooks goes beyond describing any specific process, instead giving us a roadmap (a pattern, if you will) for the development of a process that fits the specific needs of a company or team. Some salient points from the book: (1) The mythical man-month: "The second fallacious thought mode is expressed in the very unit of effort used in estimating and scheduling: the man-month. Cost does indeed vary as the product of the number of men and the number of months. Progress does not. Hence the man-month as a unit for measuring the size of a job is a dangerous and deceptive myth. It implies that men and months are interchangeable." (2) The other main point Brooks makes is that large software projects are fundamentally different than small projects, and for them to succeed, a sizable effort needs to be made to preserve the conceptual integrity of the end product by whatever means necessary.

by Volker Weber
This is disturbing: The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder - Miller, a New York University professor of media studies, has fashioned a devastating compendium of President George W. Bush's grammatical gaffes, syntactical shipwrecks, mind-boggling malapropisms and simply dumb comments. Page after page (after page) of quotations, suggests Miller, reveal that Bush is a man who, while not stupid, is prodigiously illiterate and woefully uneducated. Further, and compounding the problem, Bush could not care less about these shortcomings. How then, Miller asks, and this is his larger concern, did someone in Miller's opinion so obviously unqualified to be president convince so many voters that he was? Miller's answer is, in a word, television: Bush succeeded on TV not despite his "utter superficiality," but because his superficiality blended seamlessly with the vacuous culture of the tube.
Sysinternals Freeware - Information for
by Volker Weber
Sysinternals Freeware - Information for Windows NT and Windows 2000 - PageDefrag: One of the limitations of the Windows NT defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.
PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000 hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).
The Last Microsoft Upgrade -
by Volker Weber
The Last Microsoft Upgrade - Why You Should Give Gates & Co. $300 More -- and Then No More: "I think you should go out and buy a Microsoft product immediately. Get Windows 2000 while you still can. It's not cheap -- the full, non-upgrade version costs $319, street price $290 -- but Windows 2000 Professional is a terrific operating system, fast, stable, feature-rich, and free of Product Activation, Passport, and other good-for-Microsoft, bad-for-you baggage. It'll run all your software, and it won't stop running if you tweak your hardware or fail to send more bucks to Microsoft next year.

Is software's future in the Groove?: "While Groove isn't trying to be a consumer application at first, preferring to focus on the enterprise, consumer awareness is important. That's where Microsoft can help. Groove will be integrated into Microsoft's (MSFT: news, chart, profile) Instant Messenger, which is part of the upcoming Windows XP operating system. An applet inside Instant Messenger will let users see shared workspaces and invite others in."
