Gmail gets a new interface. And it works offline.

by Volker Weber

Gmail Offline beta is a Gmail app built to support offline access, allowing mail to be read, responded to, searched and archived without network access. After first start-up, Gmail Offline will automatically synchronize messages and queued actions anytime Chrome is running and an Internet connection is available. More than just an offline app, the streamlined user interface, based off Gmail’s popular tablet interface, provides extremely fast response time with a pure, email focused experience.

TomTom hat ein Problem

by Volker Weber

"Flughafen Frankfurt, Terminal 2". Gib das mal in einem TomTom ein. Und dann bitte einmal in Google Maps.

Nokia Maps keeps getting better

by Volker Weber

ZZ60ADFA01

Live traffic. Now weather. Get your fix at BetaLabs.

Update. Actually, I advise to stay away. The "Smart Installer" broke my N8 in interesting ways. It fails to install the beta. It won't let me uninstall the failed beta install. And it messes up the N8 so that I cannot reinstall Nokia Maps 3.0.6.

Time to once again format the device and start all over.

Playing with the PlayBook

by Volker Weber

ZZ7C83260F.jpg

This is my second time with the BlackBerry PlayBook. First I had it for ten days to write about my initial impressions, but I quickly gave back the test sample so that others could write about it as well. Some time has passed, you read about all the good and bad, and it's time to revisit the device.

And there are a few things where RIM gets it absolutely right.

Before we get to that, let's briefly look at the market for these devices. It has been said, that people don't want a tablet. They want an iPad. I believe that's true. Then there are people, who want "better than Apple". They generally look for Android tablets. And then there was Palm HP with webOS. Well, ...

Where does that leave RIM?

There is a very good reason you want a PlayBook. It has the perfect separation of business and private use. You can hook it up to your BlackBerry if your admin lets you install Bridge, and he really, really should. Because Bridge does not export data from the BlackBerry to PlayBook. It just lets you look at it, and work with it. Somebody steals your PlayBook? Well, no business data on that. Since there is no business data on the PlayBook, your company does not have to worry a bit about what you do with your PlayBook.

This solves the #1 problem companies are facing with BYOD (bring your own device). If you own the device, or if the device contains both business and private data, under German law you can pretty much interfere with all policies business is trying to enforce. Not a problem with PlayBook. You can use Bridge apps to access your mail, calendar, addresses, internal websites, documents, etc. And all that data sits on your company issued BlackBerry and internal servers.

Since business does not have to lock down your PlayBook, you can pretty much do with it what you want. So, what is it good at? What does it do well? And what not?

First of all, PlayBook is pretty. The user interface is very, very well done. All the way down to great typography. It plays videos very well. You can easily transfer them across USB or WiFi, where the PlayBook is a server. You do it from your PC or Mac, unfortunately the PlayBook can't be the client. It's great for looking at photos and playing music. It has front facing stereo speakers, so the sound comes right out of the video you are watching. The screen is crisp, the PlayBook is light enough to hold in front you without getting tired. If you are on the road a lot, you should love the PlayBook as a companion.

Unfortunately, much of that beauty falls apart, when you get to viewing web pages, or when you are looking for apps. Font rendering in the web browser is bad. Most sites look like they are being viewed on Linux, and not like being viewed on a Mac. Most people probably don't care. I do.

If you are looking for apps, the situation is worse than it is/was on webOS. Nobody seems to care writing for PlayBook. I would neither. The thing is though, apps don't matter that much on a tablet as they do on a smartphone. In most cases you can just use the browser, as you would do on your PC.

Speaking of browsers, there are two. One connects through Wifi, the other through the BlackBerry infrastructure, most likely through BES. That's a bit confusing at first, but very normal for BlackBerry users.

What's badly missing? A native mail client for your personal mail. That's coming. People are talking about a release within a month. Video chat between PlayBook and non-PlayBook. You really can't expect people to buy two of those to connect home.

At vowe's magic flying circus, the PlayBook is holding up nicely against the iPad. Video is my favorite feature since you don't have to convert to an Apple supported format, and it's quite easy to load.

The big question is, now that RIM has solved the business side of the problem, how do they make you want a PlayBook. I will keep you posted.

Not trending towards $9

by Volker Weber

ZZ73E13909

I have been watching the GBS stock ever since an analyst made an outrageous claim about the performance of his investment. Stock was trading at $4.50 with a target of $9. The bid was $2.75, ask was $6. Quite a spread, that shows there is no market for this stock. Weeks have passed, and stock now trades for $2.70. Or isn't trading. Bid is now $1.90, ask is $3. No volumes.

What's going on? Losses are mounting. The company is buying ever more small shops that are no longer profitable. They are betting the farm on providing cloud services. And a technology that turns old ugly Notes applications into new ugly web applications.

Ovi Store restored on the N8

by Volker Weber

ZZ73A54190

Reinstalling the Ovi Store did not help. Fixing Qt did not help. Resetting the phone to factory did not help. Wiping all content did not help. So I resorted to the final measure: format the device.

You switch it off and continue to hold the power button until the battery is disconnected. It will vibrate twice. That should take about eight seconds. Then you hold three buttons: volume down, camera, menu. While holding the three buttons you power on. All but the bare essentials will be wiped off the device. Ovi Store, Maps, Qt, all gone.

The good news is that it all comes back with the Symbian Anna 1 and 2 installers. You will notice they are much larger in the picture above than they may have been in your update. That's because the N8 had to fetch everyhting.

Anyhow. Clean slate. And it's working. Now I need to convince Ovi Store that some of the apps actually do exist for my device.

Nokia does it again

by Volker Weber

ZZ12EFE6C3

4.5 months ago Nokia announced Symbian Anna and two devices it would first ship on, the E6 and X7. Existing devices, the C6-01, C7, N8, and E7 would receive updates "in the coming months". The community lit up in flames.

Today, Nokia is announcing Symbian Belle and two devices it would first ship on, the 700 and the 701. As for existing devices:

So there’s lots to look forward to on your existing Symbian^3 phone (Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01, X7, E6 and 500) and new models in coming months with Symbian Belle.

Well done, Nokia. Well done.

The 700 is a new tiny smartphone, the 701 is an update to the C7-00. It would have been called the C7-01, if Nokia hadn't change there naming scheme to three digit numbers, hence the 701. It gets a brighter screen and a NFC module. Same fix focus camera (Nokia calls it "full focus").

Once again, I will be waiting for the magnificent N8 to get the Belle update.

When this happens, it's game over

by Volker Weber

ZZ3EE6C93C.jpg

The update history will only tell you that the update failed. You can try the update again, and it will fail again. Ad infinitum. You will see the "downloading" message very briefly, followed by "installing". That gives you a hint. The device caches the download. And those files are broken. There is no escape, but to find those files in a hidden directory, that you don't have access to, unless you install a file manager that will show you these files. And then you need to know their name. That's beyond what most people can do.

On the changes at HP

by Volker Weber

Symbian Anna and why it isn't available for your phone

by Volker Weber

Nokia has started to make Anna available in certain markets, but not in all yet. Others are to follow in the next three weeks. It does not really matter where you are, but for which market your phone was manufactured. Let me fill you in how that works.

One of Nokia biggest assets is that they work with most if not all operators. And they all have their very particular requirements. The Symbian build process caters to that. Nokia can create dozens of variants of the operating system at a push of a button. What you think is an E7, or more precisely an E7-00, is called a RM-626 inside of Nokia. And there are a lot of Product Codes for the RM-626. An N8-00 is a RM-596 and you find the product codes here.

When Nokia releases updates, they do that in batches of Product Codes. If you wanted to be in the first batch, you hacked your Product Code to a generic variant that matches your hardware (German keyboard for instance). I am not sure you can still do that with the Symbian^3 devices.

The Nokia N8 gets a lot nicer with the Anna update

by Volker Weber

ZZ3B02CD7F.jpg ZZ1267918C.jpg

A QUERTY keyboard in portrait mode, split screen editing so you know your context, and even Umlauts on the German keyboard. I like that.

The browser is a lot better, but not good enough for a decent Google+ experience. I expected more. Still, this is a very good update and breath of fresh air for you N8 users out there.

How to install Symbian Anna now

by Volker Weber

There is a trick. Don't listen to what Nokia says. Do not try an update Over The Air. Do not try an update with Ovi Suite. Instead use Nokia Software Updater beta from betalabs.nokia.com. Once you have installed the update, go into Software Update on the devices and install Symbian Anna update 1/2 and Symbian Anna update 2/2. These are the applications that go with the operating system. There is also a new version of Social to install.

HP killing the TouchPad, Pre and Veer

I am currently using Google Music (beta) with the Nexus S. There is a client that uploads your iTunes tracks into the cloud and you can stream them on a desktop computer or an Android phone. It's completely transparent. You can have tracks stored on your phone, you can stream the rest over the network and you can restrict this streaming to Wi-Fi only. On top of that the client lets you make tracks from the cloud available right on the phone. It will download them in the background, in my case over Wi-Fi only.

Very cool. You never have to wire the phone to a desktop.

Storage back up

by Volker Weber

ZZ254A7B84

Getting the ReadyNAS Pro back into full operation has proven more difficult than I thought it would be. I did receive the machine back on Friday. Inserted my RAID drives and it started right away. Since the machine came with 4.2.15 and the system partition on the RAID was on 4.2.18, I attempted an upgrade. 4.2.18 has been pulled so I resorted to 4.2.19-T4. And that turned out to be a mistake. The upgrade stalled, and I did not notice since I was busy attending a visitor. By the time I turned my attention back to the machine, it was too late to call service.

With wonderful assistance from Stefan, I was able to install several builds on the machine and a free disk instead of my RAID disk, but I could not wipe the failed install from my own drives.

On Monday I called Netgear support and they 'dialed' into the machine from the network. In the afternoon, all was good and I was back at 4.2.15 with full access to my data. Before attempting the upgrade to the latest supported build 4.2.17 I did a complete sync between the ReadyNAS NV+ and the ReadyNAS Pro. Finally, today I kicked off the upgrade and it completed within minutes. Pfeeew.

Thank you, Netgear. Outstanding support!

New ReadyNAS Pro en route

by Volker Weber

ZZ7D0909E2

Exactly one week ago, my ReadyNAS Pro died. It dropped off the network, and when I went looking for it, it would not make a sound. Dead, dead, dead.

I contacted Netgear and they asked me to send it in. Sent out Friday, arrived Monday. Yesterday they told me, they were unable to fix it and were going to replace it. Today I got my UPS tracking number and if all goes well, the new machine should be here tomorrow.

The plan is simple. Unpack the machine, insert the drives in the correct sequence, wire the box up and start it. Everything should be back to normal.

A week is quite long without primary storage. But I had made plans earlier. There is a second, slower ReadyNAS for background storage. It has all the data of the ReadyNAS Pro. And on top of that, there are backups.

Can you get at your data, when parts of your infrastructure fail?

IBM Connections wins at Bayer

by Volker Weber

Bayer is one of Microsoft's largest wins. The company, a long time IBM customer, is moving to the Microsoft stack. Then last year, Bayer Material Science (BMS), a small part of Bayer, started to roll out IBM Connections, joint press release with IBM, the full treatment.

As you can imagine, that lead to some discussion within Bayer. Sharepoint MySite vs. Connections. Since the strategy was to go on a Microsoft stack, the smaller renegade BMS was set up for failure. Only they did not.

I just learned last week that Connections won. It's going to be a full rollout across the whole company. And I have a follow-up post on how I would deliver Project Vulcan. As you can imagine, it involves Connections.

RIM announces three new BlackBerrys

by Volker Weber

ZZ313DD70E.jpg

[They are announcing five, but that is just a network problem]

The one pictured above is the new Bold 9900, and that's the one you want, if you do like a BlackBerry. If you don't, move along. Nothing happens here.

The other two will be released in the future. A new Torch and a new Storm Torch. They are not calling the Storm a Storm, since that name does not have a good heritage. I suggest you stay away from the Torches. One does not have a keyboard, the other one is a fat slider.

All three of them run BlackBerry 7, and I understand you need to buy a new device to get BlackBerry 7. Since I don't have any of those devices, I can't tell you if you want BlackBerry 7, and I also do not know if it should be called BlackBerry 6.1 since BlackBerry 6 is still quite new. And pretty good.

The Bold 9900 it is. That's the one I want. Faster, with touchscreen, thinner than any previous BlackBerry, with a full keyboard. Alas, I can't have one. It's only launching soon.
