The year in review

by Volker Weber

Wrote stuff, built enterprise systems, fixed a few, traveled a bit, spoke at some conferences, spent time in the sun, ate too much good food, listened to lots of great music, saw some movies, still had a lot more readers. Resolution for next year: continue the life that I love.

Thank you for stopping by. I love you.

Mautstelle an der B3 in Darmstadt-Eberstadt

by Volker Weber

Da steht also nicht etwa 70-50-100, sondern 70-Ortseingang-Ortsausgang-100.

Digital content: Take it all off

by Volker Weber

Digitital rights management (DRM), as wrapping video in encryption that may only be decoded by licensed hardware or software is known, is the only way to prevent widespread piracy of films and television shows. That, at least, is what the respective industries that create the programming will have you believe. This is tosh, of course.

Repeat after me: DRM is bad for the customer.

RIM: Rumors About BlackBerry 10 Problems "Simply False"

by Volker Weber

John Paczkowski on AllThingsD:

Research In Motion has a simple rebuttal to rumors claiming it hasn’t been truthful about the reasons behind the delay of its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system: They’re bogus.

We haven't seen a mail client on PlayBook so far. The OS 2.0 betas are just the underlying operating system, not the application suite. Here is the problem: BES can only serve one device per user. You cannot have more than one BlackBerry per mail account. It's 1:1. One BlackBerry, one corporate mail account.

As it stands BES cannot serve the PlayBook. Today RIM could only provide direct access to mail servers or BIS. Since RIM has indicated that PlayBook 2 will be manageable, they need to provide BlackBerry Fusion real soon now. That is the management console that unifies BES with their Ubitexx acquisition.

This is the money quote:

Whatever the case, it’s easy to believe the worst, and that’s sadly telling in itself.

RIM has 65 days including Xmas to ship what they promised. And they better don't delay.

Immer noch kein Weihnachtsgeschenk?

by Volker Weber

Was braucht man also?

tizi go

by Volker Weber

Also: iPad 2 only. Für alles andere tizi ohne go.

Betreff: Lenovo Support

Hallo xxxxxxxx,

ZZ735C61AC.jpg

BlackBerry 10 late next year - is that a big deal?

by Volker Weber

ZZ53C8401B.jpg

In yesterday's earnings call RIM dropped a small bomb. BlackBerry 10 devices will not be available in the first half of 2012. Is that a big deal? I believe it is. Not because the BlackBerry 7 devices need a quick replacement. The Bold 9900 is a really great device.

The problem is that RIM is over-promising and under-delivering.

In the last earnings call they said they would be providing an update for the PlayBook in October. That sounded like PlayBook 2 was around the corner. It wasn't. At BB Devcon Americas they delivered a beta with the same app suite as 1.0. Even after we pressed hard, they would not say when 2.0 was due. There were still two weeks left in October. Then after BB Devcon they told us it would come out February 2012. This wasn't an update for the PlayBook. It was an update on the PlayBook situation. Huge disappointment.

They announced BBX at BB Devcon Americas, then rebranded it as BlackBerry 10 at BB Devcon Asia. RIM did not say a word about availability of BlackBerry 10. They waited a week, and then told the world, that BlackBerry 10 devices are far away in the future. RIM says the LTE chipsets they need won't be available until the middle of next year. That's probably true.

The elephant in the room however is that RIM cannot deliver software. And that is the big deal.

tizi 2.0 ist noch mal besser

by Volker Weber

ZZ04875A6D.jpg

Recovering a bricked TDK Boombox

by Volker Weber

ZZ17BE6B94

Some problems are here today and gone tomorrow. Olaf had the life-saving hint: a different set of instructions.

On the last pages it says, and I compress the instructions:

  1. Power off, remove power, remove any usb media.
  2. Connect power, hold the OK button, power on. The boombox may appear dead, but it's not.
  3. Keep holding the OK button for 15 seonds. Release. Press OK. Wait one second. Press OK again.
  4. Wait another 15 seonds.
  5. Power off.
  6. Insert USB media with firmware.
  7. Power on.
  8. Firmware will now install.

This did not work initially. Then I decided to make an important change: use a different thumb drive. I did exactly the same thing:

  1. Download firmware.
  2. Insert thumb drive, quickformat as FAT32 with default allocation units, naming the drive TDKFLASH.
  3. Copy firmware to empty thumb drive and eject.

And this time it worked. Remember: it's always the cable thumb drive.

And on with the good news: not only is the Boombox working again, it also sounds better than before. The distortions are gone.

It no longer goes to eleven

by Volker Weber

ZZ55502071

That was a very brief encounter. The Boombox is dead.

I ran into a small problem. Do you remember how I said it's too early to tell how the Boombox sounds? The reason I was so cautious is that there were noticeable distortions even at medium sound levels. So I started looking for firmware updates. Now you know where this is going.

My Boombox was running the initial firmware 2.2.9. In version 2.3.3 there was an important fix:

USB Playback Distortion

When playing digital audio files from an Apple iPod or iPhone, a USB flash drive, or a external USB hard disk drive, audio distortion and clipping can occur if the program material was mastered at a high level. The distortion is not related to the final power amplifier and speaker volume level.

That's it. Need to upgrade. Downloaded the new firmware and followed the instructions to the minute. When the Boombox asks "SURE!?" I hit OK. That was the last time the Boombox talked to me.

Looking further in the change log, I find this:

Improved Firmware Upgrade Protection

Under some circumstances, it was possible for the firmware upgrade to fail, resulting in an unusable product. New protections are in place to insure that the firmware upgrade will complete successfully.

Looks like I hit one of these circumstances. Time to put the Boombox back into the box and have it picked up. It was really nice knowing you.

It goes to eleven

by Volker Weber

Last year the TDK brand was resurrected. And they came back with a very strange line-up of products. I never had the chance to look at one, but right before Xmas, it's a good time to try one out. So this is it, the TDK Three Speaker Boombox. It is loud in every aspect. And very, very impratical.

First thing you notice is that this baby is big and heavy. I have hidden an iPhone in the photo above to give you an idea of its size. When you see it in person, it's even bigger. Think 27" iMac but way thicker. As it is with big cars, it needs a lot of juice. You can power it with 12 (twelve!) type D cells. Or with an external (!) 24V/40W power supply. As big as it is, TDK did not find the space for a power supply inside the box.

How do you get music to the speakers? The Boombox has an AM/FM radio with five presets, and the antennas are two separate wires you need to connect. Then there is the ubiquitous line in, both as two RCA cinch and a 3.5mm jack. You can also plug in an instrument, I assume an electric guitar for instance. Don't have one to test. And finally there is a USB port. It serves to upgrade the firmware and it also lets you connect an iPod/iPhone or a USB thumbdrive. With an iPod/iPhone you control playback through the handheld device. If you connect a thumbdrive you navigate a tiny display to select a folder to play, and the boombox will just play from the file you selected to the end of the folder and then stop or repeat the whole folder, depending on the preset. It can also play random.

Time to turn it on. There is a on/off/volume dial in the upper left, and it goes to eleven. In order to save batteries, it will turn itself off, if it's not playing music and you dial back to off and then on again to turn it back on. How does it sound? Too early to tell. It does go to eleven, but I have to compare it to other equipment costing about the same.

You may have got a sense why it is impractical. It's the size of a small TV. It won't be easy to find a place to prop it up at home. And when you take it outside, it's quite heavy, it needs a lot of batteries. And there is no protection for the speakers. So it's quite delicate, even for it's size.

Given all that, it's also very cheap. On Amazon.com you can already get it for $329. In Europe it still lists for 499 €. Be careful with marked-down prices though:

ZZ727B6946

What's missing? No dock. No remote. No Bluetooth. No WLAN/AirPlay.

The Story Behind the Wireless Music System 10 Years in the Making

by Volker Weber

However, the Sonos concept has been around for longer than you might think — almost 10 years — making founder and CEO John MacFarlane quite the visionary.

We’ve taken a look at the Sonos system, the thoughts, development process and technology behind it with commentary from Fiede Schillmoeller, Sonos’ director of PR and culture, to find out more.

The author is clearly new to the scene, otherwise she would know that the earlier bulky and expensive “ZonePlayer” models are just the Connect and the Connect:Amp she describes later. It's a nice story anyway with very few inaccuracies. Just note, that Sonos players can all be wired. About half of mine connect through Ethernet, the other ones are wireless.

Farewell, webOS

HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.

On a side note: two days ago I had my first chance to look at the HP TouchPad which they sold for $99. If you did not get one, don't feel bad. You saved $99. I'd take a PlayBook over a TouchPad any day. It's not even a race.

BBX to be named BlackBerry 10

by Volker Weber

ZZ66EAA7B1

The big news coming out of BlackBerry Devcon Asia is that BBX is not going to be called BBX, but rather BlackBerry 10. That is going to be very confusing. Because Blackberry 10 is not a descendant of BlackBerry 7 but rather QNX. However, it appears that RIM rushed the BBX name right before BlackBerry Devcon Americas without proper checking of other trademarks. So now they translate X to 10. Good luck with that.

Das blaue Monster

by Volker Weber

ZZ59B662DB.jpg

Edo Zanki, Finde Dein Glück, vom Album "Zu Viele Engel". Paul Kalkbrenner, Azure, vom Album "Berlin Calling". Ja, das geht. Singt ja auch keiner. Adele, Rolling In The Deep. Faithless, God is a DJ. Daft Punk, The Grid.

Editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award? Not by a long shot.

Nmap Hackers: C|Net Download.Com is now bundling Nmap with malware

by Volker Weber

I've just discovered that C|Net's Download.Com site has started wrapping their Nmap downloads (as well as other free software like VLC) in a trojan installer which does things like installing a sketchy "StartNow" toolbar, changing the user's default search engine to Microsoft Bing, and changing their home page to Microsoft's MSN.

Google celebrating 10 billion downloads with 10 ct an app promo

by Volker Weber

ZZ53A11C7D.jpg

The Android Market now has 10 billion downloads. Sadly for developers though, it's not as easy to actually make money with your apps on Android Market. Google is trying to fix that with a promotion that is to run for 10 days. Select popular apps all cost just 10 ct. At this price they could have given the apps away, but they want you to learn how to purchase from Android Market.

Big red switch

by Volker Weber

The original IBM PC had a big red switch on the righthand side. If anything went wrong that could not be fixed with a Ctrl-Alt-Del, you went for the big red switch to power cycle the PC. For smartphones, the big red switch is the battery, often pulled on BlackBerrys for instance. But what do you do, if you cannot pull the battery?

  1. The big red switch on the iPhone is holding both the power and the menu button for more than 10 seconds.
  2. The big red switch on the Lumia 800 is removing the SIM and holding the power button for more than 15 seconds.

Do you know any other big red switches?

SMS black hole

by Volker Weber

ZZ710AABCE.jpg

If you send me an SMS message, it ends here. Just deleted a few dozen of them. Phone calls are being forwarded to whatever phone I am currently using. If I seem to ignore your text messages, remember that I don't. I never see them.

Brauche mal einen Elektriker

vowe is a good mother.

Also: neuer Akku oder neues Gerät.

This app's goal is to let you find out as easily as possible if your Android device hosts CarrierIQ rootkit or not.

Question: do you trust this app?

CarrierIQ and your iPhone

by Volker Weber

Got to Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage. It has always been "Don't Send" on my iPhones. Because Apple asks you for this setting when you activate the phone.

Go ahead and look at the data. It's available to you. Do you find all your SMS messages, your email, your secrets?

Path 2

by Volker Weber

So today we are excited to present to you Path 2: the Smart Journal — a re-imagined, re-designed, and simplified Path. We think you’re going to love it as much as we do.

We’ve built a host of new features that make it easier to share even more on Path — your thoughts, the music you’re listening to, where you are, who you’re with, when you wake and when you sleep, and as always, your photos and videos.

I have always liked Path as a simple photo sharing app, with your closest friends. Now Path grows up to be a micro-Facebook. But I have moved on. Google+ lets me share with my closest friends, or with the world. I no longer need Path.

Belkin Camera Grip: Second Look

by Volker Weber

ZZ50E76362

As it turns out, I am not as happy with the Belkin Camera Grip as I thought I would be. Mechanically it's brilliant. But the software sucks.

When you insert the Grip for the first time, the iPhone jumps into the App Store and offers you a free download: Belkin LiveAction. Try it out. It should work without the grip. LiveAction lets you shoot photos and videos with two onscreen buttons. If you have the grip, those onscreen controls disappear and you use the two hardware buttons on the grip.

LiveAction saves your photos and videos to its own library. If you shoot dozens of photos you have to go into this library and hit share. Then you tap on every single photo before it lets you export those items to the camera roll. Which defies the purpose of making your photo shooting effortless. On the upside, you can share directly into Facebook and email. On the downside, the grip does not work with any other photo or video app.

Meh.
