Lumia 920 meldet sich an Deck

Acht Wochen ist es her, dass ich erstmals ein Lumia 920 in der Hand hatte. So richtig erlaubt war das nicht, weil die Microsoft-Polizei es verboten hatte, aber ich kann nett sprechen. Da macht man mal eine Ausnahme. Eigentlich sollten es ja nur die Presenter halten.
Nun ist es da. Und es ist noch größer, als ich es in Erinnerung hatte. Große Klugfons sind gerade angesagt. Selbst Apple hat das iPhone ein bisschen größer gemacht. Schlanker ist es, höher, aber auch dünner. So wie ein Model.
Das Lumia hat nichts von Model. Es ist einfach groß. Es hat ein riesiges Display mit einer Auflösung jenseits des iPhones, nicht nur absolut, sondern auch pro Inch oder cm. Das kann man super ablesen, und zwar sowohl drinnen als auch draussen. Die Nokianer benutzen einen Trick, der auch bei Musik Anwendung findet. Man macht nicht die lauten Töne lauter, sondern die leisen. Beim Lumia Display geht es genauso. Was drinnen bei schwachem Licht rabenschwarz ist, wird draussen einfach etwas hochgeleiert, und schon hat man draussen ebenfalls ein gut ablesbares Display. Use case: Kamera. Auf keinem anderen Sucherbild kann ich besser sehen, was auf dem Foto sein wird. Das ist ein großer Vorteil.
Und überhaupt, großer Bildschirm und hohe Auflösung. Mit 40 bis 45 geht das los mit der Alterssichtigkeit. Die Arme werden zu kurz, der Mensch braucht eine Lesebrille. Es sei denn, die Schrift ist schön groß. Und genau das leistet das Lumia 920. Seniorentauglich.
Zum Thema Kamera, ich probiere noch. Bisher keine Ausfälle. Ich erwarte keine Fotos vom Kaliber des 808 Pureview, aber das iPhone 5, das will ich schon in den Sack stecken. Und das steckt ja bekanntlich alle anderen in den Sack. Hier muss sich das Lumia noch beweisen.
Sagte ich schon, dass das Lumia groß ist? Nein? Also, das Lumia ist groß. Und schwer. Zum Vergleich ein paar Maße, von meiner digitalen Briefwaage gemessen: iPhone (original) 144g, Lumia 800 142g, iPhone 4 140g, BlackBerry 9900 130g, BlackBerry P'9981 (schwerer Brummer mit Edelstahl-Chassis) 154g. Und jetzt zwei Ausreißer: iPhone 5 112 g und Lumia 920 186g. Hundertsechsundachtzig Gramm. Das ist mehr als mein Spitzenreiter 808 PureView mit 172g.
Das muss man erst mal sacken lassen. Wenn man das iPhone 5 aus der Hand legt und das Lumia 920 aufnimmt, dann denkt man "ich bin zwei Öltanks". So viel mehr hat man in der Hand.
Zur Software kann ich noch nicht viel sagen. Habe ja erst ein paar Stunden damit rumgespielt. Mit Erleichterung kann ich feststellen, dass Microsoft es nicht vermasselt hat. Ich war etwas skeptisch als ich zum ersten Mal las, dass nun ein "richtiges" Windows rein soll. Und auch noch die Kompatibilität zu Windows Phone 7. Erleichtert stelle ich fest: man merkt eigentlich nichts. Fühlt sich an wie Windows Phone 7. Und wenn das mit WP 7.8 dann mal den gleichen Launcher kriegt, dann fühlt man noch weniger Unterschied.
Überhaupt, wer ein Lumia 800 hat, muss nicht traurig sein. Das hat immer noch die beste Haptik. Besser als das 900 allemal, aber auch noch ein bisschen besser als das 920. Das ist angenehmer in der Hand als ein 900, aber hat nicht die handschmeichlerische Leichtigkeit des 800. Ich persönlich mag sowohl die matten Oberflächen des 800 als auch das hochglänzende 920. Aber rund muss es sein und das ist beim 920 mehr als beim 900 gegeben. Die Kante am Display ist weg und der Rand ist leicht gebogen.
Beim 8000/900 wirkten die Tasten an der rechten Seite etwas scharfkantig und klapperig. Das ist jetzt weg. Das 920 ist ein solider Klotz ohne Klappen und scharfe Kanten. Die Kabel kommen oben und unten in der Mitte rein, oben das Headset, unten das Ladekabel. Ich habe beide nicht benutzt. Ich lade drahtlos mit dem Fatboy-Kissen und höre drahtlos mit dem Plantronics Backbeat.
Noch ist das 920 nicht im Handel und entsprechend ist auch noch nicht alle Software da. Aktuell kann ich das Klugfon nicht mit meinem Mac verbinden und deshalb ist meine eigene Musik noch nicht drauf. Wie gut, dass Nokia das Mix Radio mitliefert. Keine Anmeldung, keine Kosten. Einfach ein paar Mixe für den Offline-Betrieb runterladen und schon war ich im Geschäft. Die Deutschlandkarte ebenfalls für den Offline-Betrieb installiert, und im Gegensatz zu Windows Phone 7 geht das jetzt in der ganzen Nokia Navigation Suite, egal ob Drive, Maps oder CityLens.
Microsoft und Nokia sind schwer am Trommeln, dass es jetzt hundertebbestausend Apps im Store gibt. Mir nützt das nichts. Ich lebe weitgehend in einem Google-Ökosystem, das in Android und iOS exzellent und nahtlos unterstützt wird. Ich brauche Dropbox, Google+ und Path, ich brauche einen Sonos Controller, ich will Google Reader. Facebook, Skydrive und Co interessieren mich nicht. In dem Sinne bin ich auf dem Lumia genauso einsam wie auf einem BlackBerry. Aber den liebe ich ja auch.
So, und jetzt lasst mich mal eine Woche weiterspielen. Dann sehen wir weiter.
PS: Binnen 24h ist mir das Gerät zweimal vom Tisch gefallen, so sagenhaft glatt ist es auf allen Seiten. Eine Ecke ist ein bisschen kaltverformt, aber das kann man anders nicht erwarten. Weiter ist ihm nichts zugestoßen, die selbe Formanpassung hat auch schon das heiß geliebte Lumia 800.

Google Voice Search for iOS is outstanding

This is a big slap in Apple's face. Remember how Apple shipped Siri as an exclusive feature for the iPhone 4S, although it's a server app quite capable running on any iOS device? Even the iPad 2 would not run it.
Now Google is shipping a search app with voice input that runs on everything from the venerable iPhone 3GS. Not only that, it also runs rings around Siri. When Siri hasn't even decoded what you just said, Google already has the results.
Like Google Now, it's better in English than in German. But you will want to use your own language anyway.

I want want want this to work, but one problem after another have led me to come to the conclusion - a temporary one at least - that this thing just isn't ready to ship.
I have no personal experience with the Surface, but I getting very suspicious. Microsoft has outdone Apple with trying to control the message. Hands-on briefings without hands on. Very short supply of review units. And now the real world tests from users come in, and they reveal things you have not read in professional reviews? You can out-type Microsoft Word on this machine? That's Microsoft's hardware, operating system, and application software. And that cannot keep up?

Wenn man in einem Projekt mit einer zusammengewürfelten Mannschaft arbeitet, dann findet man die unterschiedlichsten Menschentypen. Und das ist gut so, weil man für die Qualitätssicherung eher Pedanten gebrauchen kann und für den Entwurf Visionäre. Umgekehrt geht das schief. Wenn jemand irgendwo sitzt, wo ihm die Arbeit keine Freude bereitet, dann wird das Ergebnis nicht stimmen. Sowas kann man lösen, indem man den Menschen anders einsetzt.
Aber, es gibt ein nicht lösbares Problem. Ich habe das schon vor langer Zeit beschrieben: vowe's Gesetz der konstanten Armleuchterquote.
Ich habe ein sehr gutes Gespür für solche Menschen. Manchmal merke ich es nach wenigen Sekunden. Ganz selten muss ich mich korrigieren und mache das dann auch. Oft bereue ich das später, weil das erste Gefühl richtig war.
Was macht man mit den Armleuchtern? Man stellt sie kalt. Man ignoriert sie. Das ist eine furchtbare Strafe, weil gerade der Armleuchter davon überzeugt ist, alles besser zu können. Und deshalb schießt er beständig gegen andere, am liebsten aus dem Hinterhalt. Diese Wandschmiererei da oben findet sich an einer Darmstädter Schule. Ich vermute, dort soll eine Lisa gemobbt werden, von einem Armleuchter, wahrscheinlicher von einer Gruppe.
Armleuchter werden sehr jung geprägt. Mir tun sie selten leid. Und sie tun mir schon gar kein Leid.

Having the dominant platform is hugely beneficial to the platform owner. This used to be the Microsoft play, and now it has turned into Apple's play. You buy an iPad because you know, you just know, that if there is software out there, that scratches your particular itch, it will run on iPad. Most likely it will be optimized to run on iPad, and if it isn't, it's still going to run in iPhone mode. Which ever since the Retina iPad 3 is quite usable.
Android has caught up. You can now expect companies to also write an Android version. It's most likely not going to be optimized for your display, and the Nexus 7 was conceived to change this.
As you leave the safe iOS and the promising Android space, you no longer know you are going to be served. You as a customer.
Microsoft is pushing really hard to get back into the safe space. The trouble is that Windows Phone applications won't run on Windows RT devices and Windows apps will not run on Windows Phone. It's going to get easier as more people write to the WinRT subsystem, but while WP7 apps will run on WP8, WP8 apps don't run on existing WP7 phones. Your Windows RT Surface will not run any of your existing Windows apps. None, zilch. As a software developer, what are you going to do?
Microsoft is further complicating matters with lots of different SKUs of Windows. While there is only one iOS and only one OS X, there are multiple version of Windows. Some can join an Active Directory, others can't. And there are multiple versions of Office. You just can't be sure what's going to work.
I can easily add a new Apple machine and have it inherit the state of any of my other machines, unattended and overnight. And I am so confident that it is going to work, that I would leave home the next day and not look back. In the last 15 months I have used four different iPhones and five different iPads. I have added a MacBook Air and returned it after a month. Without any effort whatsoever.
What a change of tides. Once you were safe, if you had Microsoft. Now you are safe, when you have Apple.

A few thoughts on Apple and the new gear

Tim Cook is proud of Apple's achievements in 2012. They refreshed everything, iPad, iPod, iPhone, MacBook, iMac. Thinner, lighter, faster, it's all great. Were there any surprises this year? Not really.
This event was a grab bag of things to round out the news for 2012:
- iPad 4. Twice as fast, Lightning connector, front facing HD camera, LTE that works with Deutsche Telekom. Same price. If you just bought an iPad 3, you are good, but you will still hate yourself for not waiting for the iPad 4.
- iPad mini. Very similar to the iPad 2, smaller, much lighter, no Retina display. Entry level offering with $329 looks OK, but gets expensive really quickly as you add storage or 3G/LTE.
- MacBook Pro 13.3" with Retina display. Wonderful machine.
- iMac. Finally drops the DVD drive. I have never used mine. Incredibly thin, if you don't walk around the back. Anyway, the old one looks old now. ;-)
- Mac mini. Yada, yada.
A few thoughts:
- The MacBook Pro quickly becomes the equivalent of the iPod classic. Lots of storage, but "old". Apple has to keep it for those people who need storage but can't afford the Retina display.
- The prices that Apple charges as you add flash storage to the iPod/iPhone/iPad line are simply ridiculous. Adding $100+ for an additional 16GB? Just like two years ago? Not good.
- Windows 8 devices will introduce touch to notebooks and desktops. Apple will need to find a good anwser.
- What's the fate of the Mac Pro? That has been looking like the iPod classic for a long time.
- iPod touch looks like an odd name now. It's an iPad nano. Or an iPhone Wifi. Aspect ratios make the difference. iPhone/iPod touch are 16:9 and iPads are 4:3.
Ed Brill - 1,151 enterprises return to Notes/Domino YTD in 2012

One of the metrics of the Notes/Domino business that my team has been tracking this year is "reinstatements," or customer purchases that bring lapsed licenses back on active maintenance contracts.
For the first three quarters of 2012, that number is a surprising 1,151 enterprises.
I am missing one driver from the explanation: Traveler. You can't get Traveler if you are not on maintenance. And you need Traveler if you want to support those iPhones that are replacing BlackBerrys left and right. Not to forget the iPad, which sold 100 million since it became available in 2010.
The gist of the post is also a bit misleading. These are customers who did not pay for maintenance and now do. This is not about migrations from competing offerings.
The really interesting number, that IBM is not going to give you, is how many seats IBM has on maintenance. My gut feeling is about 20 to 25% of lifetime licenses sold.

Revealed: Everything Google Will Unveil at its Oct. 29 Android Event

Diverting some of the attention away from Apple’s ‘iPad mini’ unveiling on October 23 and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event on October 29, Google is to unveil a number of new devices and software improvements on the same day as Microsoft - and we have all the details.
Android 4.2, Nexus 7 with 32GB (and HSPA support), Samsung-built 10" Nexus tablet with 2560×1600 pixel (16:10) resolution, LG-built Nexus 4 Smartphone with quad-core CPU and 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 display.
I'd love to see more Nexus devices with stock Android. The Nexus 7 is really nice. If there were only more tablet apps.
iOS und Bluetooth - eine unendliche Geschichte

Bei jedem großen Update hat iOS eine Bluetooth-Regression. Irgendwas geht kaputt und dann braucht es ein paar Revisionen, bis wieder alles geht. iOS 5.0 schlecht, iOS 5.1.1 gut, iOS 6.0 schlecht. Die Fehler zeigen sich überall. Abgebrochene Gespräche, defekte Paarungen, stockende Musik.
Und das BH-905i von Nokia ist da der beste Lackmus-Test. Wenn es damit geht, ist der BT-Stack in Ordnung. Ist er aber nicht. Ich kann stundenlang Musik hören, mit iPhone 5 und BH-905i. Sobald ich aber eine Email beantworte, macht es auf einmal Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut. Bis ich das Headset ausschalte. Das iPhone hat sich wieder mal verspult.
Nein, das ist kein Nokia-Problem. Auch wenn Plantronics offenbar um diese Probleme herumbastelt. Wobei, gestern kam ein Anruf nicht auf dem BackBeat an sondern auf dem Telefon. Yoda sagt, näher beobachten Du musst.
Das Foto hat übrigens einen Belichtungsfehler. Sieht genauso kaputt aus, als wäre es in Instagram gewesen. :-)

Why Windows Just Can't Win

The Metro name, the crapware, and the horrible release dates all point to the same problem: Even when Microsoft has a great product on its hands, even when its product, engineering and design teams manage to hit one out of the park, it won’t matter once the business team comes in and ruins it for everyone.
Prepare for the backlash, when customers find out that Surface will not run their existing Windows apps.

Der gemeine Facebook-Benutzer glaubt, dass alle seine Freunde auch alle seine Statusupdates bekommen. Das ist allerdings schon lange nicht mehr so. Facebook filtert den Stream und zeigt nur die Dinge an, die es für relevant hält.
Oder die Beiträge, für die es Geld kassiert hat. Das nennt man Werbung, oder bei Facebook "Sponsored". Das können nicht nur Unternehmen, das kannst Du auch.
Wer also will, dass der Statusupdate auch angezeigt wird, der kann für einen kleinen Beitrag dafür sorgen. Gut, gell?

Ich bin bekennender Dyson-Fan. Und jetzt habe ich auch noch einen. :-) Im Ernst: wir haben seit vielen Jahren Dyson-Staubsauger und wir würden nie wieder etwas anderes kaufen. Die sind zwar teuer und laut, aber dafür funktionieren sie wunderbar. Die Kernkompetenz von Dyson ist einfach: Elektromotoren und Luft bewegen. Dafür gibt es einige Anwendungen, unter anderem "Hände trocken pusten". So laut wie ein Airblade ist ein Staubsauger nicht, aber genauso gut.
Seit letztem Jahr haben wir einen Plömp. Der heißt so, weil er genau dieses Geräusch macht, wenn man den Staubbehälter öffnet. Wir waren erst etwas skeptisch, ob man so etwas braucht. Schließlich gibt's seit Ewigkeiten Besen und Kehrblech. Aus Skepsis wurde Begeisterung. Wenn das Ding heute kaputt ginge, hätte ich den Auftrag, binnen 24 Stunden Ersatz zu beschaffen.
Darf ich vorstellen - die neue Maschine in vowe's magic flying circus:
Das ist ein Dyson Air Multiplier. Und der macht warm und nicht nur kalt. Dyson hat vier verschiedene Ventilatoren ohne Rotor: AM01 ist das Tischgerät, AM03 das gleiche "am langen Stock", AM02 ist ebenfalls ein Standgerät, aber es macht sich schlanker. Und schließlich der AM04, den schauen wir uns hier an.
Das Wirkprinzip aller vier Geräte ist gleich: Luft wird durch die Gitter im Sockel angesaugt, beschleunigt und dann durch einen Schlitz in einen aerodynamisch gestalteten Kanal ausgestoßen. Den kann man sich wie eine endlose Tragfläche vorstellen, auf deren Oberseite die Luft bewegt wird. Dabei nimmt sie weitere Luft von hinten mit und "multipliziert" so die bewegte Luftmenge.
Lässt man den AM04 volle Pulle auf Stufe 10 laufen, dann braucht er gerade mal knapp 18 Watt (gemessen mit meinem Belkin Conserve Insight). Für einen spürbaren Luftzug reicht aber auch schon Stufe 1 und dann zieht das Gerät 9W.
Das ist aber nur die halbe Miete. Der AM04 hat auch eine Heizeinheit. Statt kalter Luft pustet er dann genauso effektiv auch warme. Und diese Wärme will erst mal erzeugt werden. Wenn man richtig Gas gibt, dann zieht das Gerät 1900 Watt aus der Dose und erzeugt einen Wüstensturm. Weil er wie ein Ventilator um 90 Grad hin und her schwenken kann, pustet er damit ruckzuck das ganze Zimmer voll warme Luft. Und wenn er die eingestellte Temperatur erreicht hat, dann hört er einfach auf.
Das ist der Unterschied zwischen dem Ventilator- und dem Heizbetrieb. Im Ventilatorbetrieb stellt man die Luftmenge ein, die er bewegen soll. Im Heizbetrieb regelt er das selbst und man wählt die gewünschte Temperatur.
Damit man das alles nicht direkt am Gerät steuern muss, gibt es eine kleine Fernbedienung. Und die kann bei Nichtgebrauch einfach oben auf den AM04 gelegt werden, wo sie sich mittels Magnet festhält.
Ich wohne in einem sehr gut isolierten Haus mit sparsamer Heizung. Das kann alles, außer mal eben muckelig warm machen. Und das will ich diesen Winter mal mit dem heißen Dyson ausprobieren. This is really embarrassing. I am experiencing some difficulties with correct spelling. It started with typos, then small grammar mistakes, and then I found myself typing a different word than the one I was thinking. Now it's gotten out of hand. Sometimes complete sentences are all wrong.

How to read quarterly reports

If you read that a business lost 10% revenue four quarters in a row, what is the total loss for the year? Hint: it's not minus 40%, nor minus 34.39% for those better at math. It's minus 10%. Why? Each quarter is measured year over year, against the same quarter of last year. Since each quarter lost 10% over last year's quarter, the total revenue for that year also lost only 10%.
What does that mean for the Lotus numbers*? I have set up a little table with the numbers readily available by going to http://www.ibm.com/investor/3q12/press.phtml and then replacing the year and quarter. 2009 is the earliest full year on that pattern.
I am setting 2008 as 100%. The quarters do not have equal revenue as you might imagine, but the table still helps to understand how the mechanics work. The second quarter is the one with the most up and downs, the fourth quarter is very steady. You may find your own explanation. Mine is that in the fourth quarter you are trying to reel in whatever you can to meet your target.
Overall, Lotus is losing revenue, but not as much as you may have thought.
*) This is ceteris paribus. It does not account for currency changes, nor does it account for a changing set of product revenues consolidated under one brand. It's only based on the press reports.
IBM Third-Quarter Earnings are out

Revenues from the WebSphere family of software products increased 2 percent year over year. Information Management software revenues decreased 1 percent. Revenues from Tivoli software increased 5 percent. Revenues from Lotus software decreased 10 percent, and Rational software decreased 16 percent.
Plantronics BackBeat GO

You may remember my Nokia BH-505 fiasco: dead within three months, most likely because of moisture from working out. Then I found out about the moisture protection in the Plantronics Voyager Legend. No wonder this thing wouldn't break down even if it got wet.
For phone calls that's all nice. They work perfectly well when you listen through one ear only. But that's not the case when you want to listen to music. This got me looking for earbuds from Plantronics, and bingo, there they were, BackBeat Go. Same moisture protection!
I wasn't disappointed. The headset comes in a packaging that is nicely designed. It's held together with stickers that are clearly marked. The headset itself is presented at the top of the box and it's just a great experience to unbox the content. Sorry, no stupid video. :-)
Well, how does it work? It's a Bluetooth headset with two earbuds, connected by a flat wire that does not tangle. You wear that wire behind your head so you can take out one earbud without dangling the whole headset from the other ear. Close to your right ear, there is a microphone and the buttons that control the headset. You can see that piece in the top most photo.
I have only briefly tested the headset. Pairing is a no-brainer, it fits right in my ears without any discomfort. The sound is very very clear, clearer than on any Bluetooth stereo headset I have tried so far, and it is somewhat lacking in the bass department*. Now it's charging.
A small pouch, ear gels in three different sizes and a small USB-MicroUSB cable complete the box. The cable has a clever design. You can daisychain a USB cable to charge your phone from the same charger.
I will keep you posted on how well the BackBeat GO work out over the next couple of weeks.
*) Correction: this was an issue with the seal. Ear canal headsets only deliver a solid bass, if you can fit them into the ear canal. I was using the small gels and then the large ones. Both did not seal. Now I am on the medium size and all is well.

There is a small kettle boiling about the removal of this site from PlanetLotus. Time to look back why it was there anyway. About ten years ago my server was the training wheels for edbrill.com. Way back before any of this Lotus blogging started to become fashionable, edbrill.com was just a DNS entry for edbrill.vowe.org. And traffic was very low:
The original design was a stock MovableType template. Ed was interested in having his presence running on top of Domino, so within a couple of months, that design was recreated on top of a bespoke Notes application. Way before there were any blogging templates for Domino. We moved the content over and edbrill.com took flight on Domino.
Anyway, I was interested in Lotus then, and I still am. My topics have expanded into lots of other areas, chief among them mobile devices which capture a lot of imagination today. And yes, my colleagues make fun of me for still keeping an eye on Notes & Domino. But that's OK.

The way we take and use photographs is changing. We click, tap, or swipe to take a photograph. We tweak them, adding effects and processing images, before sending them to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. We share them with friends, with family, with colleagues. They're stored in cloud photo galleries, synchronised across PCs, tablets and phones. They're printed in books, turned into mugs, used as screen backdrops, even as passwords.
The single-use camera is going the same way as the wristwatch.

I have heard so much hyperbole about the Notes 9 posting, that I think I need to explain how this sort of thing comes along. Here is what happens:
- Somebody sends me great news.
- Since I don't believe in miracles, I check what the chances are that the information is correct.
- When I deem the information to be correct, I ask the source whether there is a problem if I proceed. Only after that I post the information.
- When I find ambiguities later, I slipstream details in.
- When I find inaccuracies, I correct my mistakes with an Update amendment.
And that's all there is. No politics, no tactics. Just my view of the world. Your view may be different. Just do not assume either one of us is right.
On a more personal note: By all means sling shit. Just don’t expect me to sling it back.

IBM Notes and Domino 9.0 Social Edition

Good news leaking out of IBM. Notes is finally dropping the Lotus moniker and going straight to version 9 instead of 8.5.4. Lotus is gone. It's IBM Collaboration Solutions now, all the way.
Other goodies:
- Notes Traveler enhancement include support for the To Do function on iOS & Android, Windows Phone 7.5/8 support and IBMi support.
- No-cost entitlements to enhanced Connections 4.0 Files and Profiles modules, Mobile access
- Activity Streams (requires Connections license) and Embedded Experiences (does not require Connections license)
- Notes Browser Plug-in allows users to access their Notes application from a browser
IBM won't make it this year. Looks like a Lotusphere, errrr Connect, launch.

Habe wieder mal drei Monate Spotify mit einem Prepaid-Coupon. Ich nutze das so wenig, dass ich irgendwie ein anderes Modell als ein Monatsabo brauchen könnte. Seit gestern geht Spotify übrigens auch auf Samsung SmartTVs. Das läuft für mich unter Kuriosität, weil die Mukke schon aus dem SONOS kommt. Der Fernseher wäre nur ein Umweg.

Das sieht nicht schick aus, aber es geht. Apple hat zwei Adapter von 30 pol auf Lightning, mit und ohne Kabel. An beiden funktioniert das tizi go tadellos. Ich mag den Adapter mit Kabel besser, weil da keine Biegemomente entstehen. Jetzt fehlt mir nur noch der Adapter für MicroUSB.
Die tizi.tv App unterstützt übrigens sowohl iOS 6 als auch das größere Display des iPhone 5.
BlackBerry richtig platt machen

Hatte einen BlackBerry verliehen und mit IT Policies verseucht zurückbekommen. Mit einem Wipe kriegt man die nicht runter. Aber das ist alles kein Problem, wenn man Abdelkader Boui kennt. Der weiß schlicht alles, was man zu BlackBerry wissen kann.
Bonuspunkte: Ich musste nicht mal mein schreckliches Windows-Netbook aus dem Stall holen.
Mehrsprachiges Diktieren

Ich dachte, ich muss mich entscheiden. Soll Siri mich auf Deutsch verstehen, oder auf Englisch? Jetzt habe ich gelernt, dass wie bei der Worterkennung jeweils die Sprache der ausgewählten Tastatur gilt. Mein nächster Wunsch: Siri soll selbst entscheiden, welche Sprache ich gerade spreche. Das hilft dann vielleicht auch beim Denglisch.
Entscheiden muss man sich übrigens weiter bei der Sprache der Assistenzfunktion. Und da fällt die deutsche Variante weiter hinter das Original zurück.
Diktieren auf dem iPad

Gestern habe ich auf Google+ bei einem Beitrag zum mehrsprachigen Diktieren auf dem iPhone einen Hinweis bekommen, der mich stutzig gemacht hat:
Hat denn jemand ähnliche schlechte Erfahrungen wie ich mit der Spracherkennung auf dem iPad 3? Das ist leider nicht zu gebrauchen und ich habe keine Erklärung woran das liegen könnte.
Das deckt sich überhaupt nicht mit meinen Erfahrungen. Worin kann die Ursache liegen? Ich verwende meistens ein Headset, das dem iPhone oder iPad ein sauberes Signal ohne störende Hintergrundgeräusche liefert. Das ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung für gute Spracherkennung. Das iPad hat unten einen Lautsprecher und oben ein Mikrofon. Auf dem Bild ist ein kleines Loch in der schwarzen Blende erkennbar. Dahinter liegt das Mikro. Das kann man selbst testen, in dem man einen Voice Recorder nutzt und das Gerät vor dem Mund dreht, während man leise spricht.
Wer dieses Loch mit dem Finger oder einer Hülle abdeckt, kann nicht erwarten, dass Siri funktioniert. Es sei denn, er nutzt ein Headset. Das Headset-Mikrofon ist wahrscheinlich sehr viel näher am Mund.

Exchange/iOS "meeting hijack" history goes back well before iOS 6

Yesterday, in discussing the new reports of meeting invitation issues between Microsoft Exchange and iOS 6 devices using ActiveSync, I mentioned that I recall having seen these sorts of problems in prior versions of iOS and OS X, albeit infrequently. The issue manifests as one recipient declining an invitation which mistakenly cancels the meeting for everyone, "hijacking" the meeting out from under the original organizer.

A few years ago, when LotusLive launched, I opened a trial account on the site. As a Lotusphere attendee I was entitled to a few months of free service. I never had any real use for the service and when the trial period ended, I let it lapse. That was more than three years ago.
Apparently IBM still has me in their directory. There is nothing I can do about that. Can't login, can't reset password. The account has its own life and lives forever.
Lotus Notes and OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion

This technote contains questions and answers pertaining to installing and running IBM Lotus Notes on Apple's OS X 10.8.x Mountain Lion.
Life became somewhat complicated when Apple introduced a note taking app called "Notes". Instead of just overwriting an existing (IBM Lotus) Notes application in the apps directory, the OS X installer moves it out of the way to a "/Applications/Lotus Notes" folder. This leaves a bit of a mess behind.
IBM has now decided it's best to call the app "Lotus Notes" instead of just Notes and move it back into the /Applications folder. They are providing an "Interim Fix 1 for Notes 8.5.3 Fix Pack 2" to move the files and adjust the installation log.
At the same time IBM also provides an updated installer, that installs Notes as "Lotus Notes". Starting with Notes 8.5.3 Fix Pack 3 this fix is going to be merged into the regular distribution.
Unfortunately the Lotus Notes installer is still unsigned and will fail to pass Gatekeeper security if that is active. IBM is "evaluating" Retina display support for future Notes versions. That is a much bigger issue since Notes makes use of Carbon APIs which do not support Retina display resolutions.

Nokia Belle FP2 for the 808 PureView

We already reported on the fledgling rollout of the major Belle Feature Pack 2 update for the Nokia 808 Pureview, a few weeks ago, when the v113.010 firmware files appeared on Navifirm for a day or so and then disappeared. Thankfully, all has been found well with the new version of the update and the roll out has started officially to Nokia 808 PureViews around the globe. There's also a brace of application updates which come along for the ride, including a new version of Social, plus extra features which have only now come to light, including voice search in Nokia Maps. Changelog below, along with plenty of screenshot proof.
