Two Windows 8.1 RT improvements

There are two immediate improvements I like in Windows 8.1 RT on Microsoft Surface: the lockscreen can play a slideshow from any folder, here my SkyDrive photostream. And SkyDrive can finally sync to Surface and make files available offline. That was a glaring omission.

MÜNCHEN, 26. Juni 2013. Telefonica hat heute den Start eines gemeinsamen Marketing-Programmes mit Microsoft bekannt gegeben. Es soll den Absatz von Geräten mit Windows Phone 8 fördern. Telefónica wird zunächst für die Dauer eines Jahres seine Marketing-Aktivitäten für Windows Phone 8 in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Spanien, Brasilien, Chile und Mexiko ausbauen.
Spannende Entwicklung. Wenn am Point of Sale mehr unternommen wird, können die Windows Phones beträchtlich gewinnen.
Smartphones und Tablets bei der Arbeit

Für eine möglichst breite Marktübersicht suche ich ca 20 Smartphones/Phablets/Tablets, die man für den Unternehmenseinsatz in Betracht ziehen könnte. Ein paar Geräte sind von meiner Seite aus gesetzt, etwas iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry Q10. Welche Geräte würdet Ihr in einer Marktübersicht erwarten und warum?
Wichtig: es geht nicht darum, die teuersten Geräte zu finden. Fuhrparks bestehen auch nicht nur aus Oberklasse-Limousinen und Sportfahrzeugen. Ein Lumia 520 könnte interessant sein, weil es so preiswert ist.
TechEd Europe Stream on Surface RT

Today I watched the TechEd Europe keynote before doing anything else. I had opened it from an email on Surface RT and I was blown away by the quality. Never mind the sound that was a lot better than what the microphone picked up. Video has HD without a single hiccup during the whole session.
Migration from Google Reader completed

I have moved my news reading from iPad to Surface RT and Lumia a while ago. NextGen Reader is my choice of app on both platforms. Feedly support for Windows Phone became available this weekend, and on Windows RT and Windows 8 it came out of beta today. If Reeder on iPhone, iPad and Mac starts supporting Feedly in the future, it might win me back. For now I am happy camper.

We're a Nitix partner and got abandoned by IBM. But, still keep using Lotus Foundation Start at our office.
Recently we faced some issue with Expired Lotus Notes Id. Can you please suggest, if you can, how to recertify an expired Lotus Notes ID.
Whenever we try to connect to Lotus Foundations Server using Lotus Notes 8.5 client, upon login using username/password we get this error: Server Error: Your Certificate has expired.
For Lotus Domino extensive documentation is available telling how to recertify an expired Lotus Notes ID. But there does not seem to be any documentation on Lotus Foundations site/wiki telling us how to recertify an expired Lotus Notes ID. We are using Lotus Foundations Start 1.1.x Any help would be appreciated.

Soeben hat sich ein Airport Express mit einem lauten Brrraaazzz verabschiedet. Dann war das ganze Haus dunkel. Ich weiß jetzt, dass mein FI sauber funktioniert. Access Points gibt's genug. Aber keinen, der sich so schön mit Drucker im Apple-Netz einfügt. Schaun mer mal. Vielleicht sind die neuen ja besser.

Da lese ich die Überschrift 'Ideen für neuen Personalausweis dringend gesucht' auf heise.de und muss wieder an mein Kopfschütteln denken, das jedesmal einsetzt, wenn die deutsche Politik oder Wirtschaft die IT ordnet. Ein paar Beispiele:
- Das Signaturgesetz sollte dafür sorgen, dass wir unsere Dokumente signieren und vertraulich austauschen können. Erfolg: nada. Jeder schickt seinen Krempel weiterhin als "Postkarte" durch die Email-Infrastruktur.
- Die elektronische Gesundheitskarte (eGK) sollte die zum 1. Januar 1995 eingeführte Krankenversicherungskarte in Deutschland ersetzen. Die Einführung war für den 1. Januar 2006 geplant. Sieben Jahre später ist immer noch unklar, wann eine Einführung möglich sein wird.
- Der E-Postbrief sollte ein neues Geschäftsfeld für die gelbe Post werden. Porto auf die Email. Erfolg: 500 Millionen in die Werbung gepumpt. Die Bahn hat derweil ein Konkurrenzsystem der Schweizer gekauft.
- Theseus. Nie gehört? Eben.
- Der elektronische Personalausweis, euphemistisch neuer Personalausweis (nPA) genannt. Na, wer kann die nicht-hoheitlichen Funktionen aufzählen? Eben. Da kommt auch die qualifizierte elektronische Signatur (QES) wieder um die Ecke. Siehe Punkt 1 oben. Hätte man "kostenlos" drauf machen können. Hat man aber nicht. Erfolg: nutzt immer noch keiner.
Und jetzt? De-Mail. Wird bestimmt auch super.
IBM Notes makes it into Windows Phone 8

Nokia Lumia 925 runs on Windows Phone 8 GDR 2, or as Nokia calls it "Amber". The other Lumias get the update next month. Then you will find a new entry in the Add An Account dialog: IBM Notes Traveler. No big deal, since it only sets up an Exchange ActiveSync account. But a nice touch anyway.

The Company will promptly file Amendment No. 1 to the Form 10-K containing the correct version of the audited financial statements. The Company's authorized officers have discussed with the Company's Board of Directors and independent accountant the matters disclosed in this Form 8-K.

My best computer purchase ever

Four years ago I bought a MacBook Pro. And I still use it every single day. I have upgraded the memory from 2 to 8 GB and replaced the disk with 256 GB solid state memory, but the rest is still working beautifully. And since Apple never made big changes to the design it still looks fresh. Battery life isn't great. I can get between three and four hours, but it's workable.
Apple announced a new MacBook Air today that I find tempting. The 13" model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash storage would set me back 1399. (Remember, you can't upgrade the machine later.) It would match the specs of the four year old machine. Three benefits: really long battery life, more pixels, less weight.
Just not enough to make me buy one. The old one is still doing too well.
A few quick remarks on the WWDC keynote

It's been a long time since Apple announced any new gear. And WWDC is not about new hardware. It's all about the software to be delivered through the rest of the year. With that in mind:
- Mac Pro sneak preview: very unusual. It was an assurance that Apple will deliver to the power-hungry. A replacement for the Pro was long overdue. They have not quite finished it yet, but we know it's coming.
- New MacBook Air: that was to be expected but it did not quite fit into the format of the keynote. Long battery life: good. No touch: bad.
On to the software:
- Great iOS redesign. Will be released with the new iPhone in the fall. Maybe a new iPad is also in store. Supported from the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 up, it won't support all features on all devices. There simply is not enough power in the older ones. I expect it will perform well from the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 up.
- Activation lock is long overdue. I am not sure why this needs a new operating system. Apple has all UDID and if you set your device as stolen, they could refuse to activate it.
- I almost fell asleep in the OS X Mavericks presentation. I have not picked up many new features in Lion or Mountain Lion. And I don't expect to do it in Mavericks. I will upgrade anyway, because it's not expensive and I will like a few bits and pieces.
- iWork iCloud. Kind of inevitable, now that Microsoft does that. What kills Numbers and Pages for me is the file format. For Keynote I am making an exception because it is my instrument, my tool. I know how to efficiently make great presentations with it. But I am not seeing Apple making any inroads into Microsoft Office or LibreOffice territory. It's kind of a lame duck.
I am missing something revolutionary. Anything that changes the status quo. Everything gets a little bit better. iOS gets a lot more modern. The good news is that none of the things shown today will disrupt existing patterns and workflows.
But if Apple does not lead the world to a new level, somebody else will. Like a surfer, Apple will need to be in front of the next wave.
