The user experience on Windows Phone is different. In a good way. Case in point is a radio stream I was trying to listen to: Deep Mix Moscow Radio. Yes, they have an app, but that only works on a backlevel version of Windwos Phone. Then I thought, why don't I just install the client that also provides the same stream on my SONOS: tunein. And here is the difference, that Windows Phone makes: you don't have to bookmark the radio station within the app. You just pin it to your home screen. It's a deep link into the app, and thus the radio station. No need for a separate app, if you want Ibiza Sonica as well.

Man könnte sich vorstellen, dass Nokia die Antwort auf diese Frage in der Schublade hat. Anscheinend kann man den Schlüssel aber nicht finden.
BlackBerry updates to 10.1 MR1

If you have a BlackBerry Q10 or Z10 in EMEA, you should receive an upgrade notice for an OTA update. If not, go into Settings/Software Update. There is a new way to get to the next or previous message on the Z10. Swipe to the right until the message list shows up on the left and then either up or down. For the Q10, there is a new keyboard shortcut U to get to the newest unread message.
Folks in the US will need to brace themselves until the end of summer. Verizon customers just got the initial 10.1 release.

SONOS without Wifi

SONOS players create their own Wifi network. They also have Ethernet ports. If you wire up all your players with Ethernet, and you are not using any SONOS hardware controllers, you can switch off the Wifi network. For that you need to visit each player and call one of these URLs:

How do you find [sonosip]? Go to "About Sonos" on your PC/Mac controller. You will find entries like these:

I suggest you first try this without the persist option. If anything goes wrong, you just restart the players. This obviously renders any ZoneBridge useless. And you can no longer use any SONOS players without an Ethernet wire. However, in those places where Wifi would interfere with other equipment, you now have an option to use SONOS. You also do not have to switch off Wifi in all players. This is an individual setting. And please, understand what you are doing, before you walk into this mess. There is a reason why Sonos does not make this available in the app. SonosNet is a mesh. It works better and with less 'radiation' the more nodes it has.
If you believe in bad vibes from Wifi, that's your religion. I do know a few people who use PowerLine because they suffer from Wifi. I am not telling them how PowerLine works over unshielded cable. Otherwise they run out of options.;-)
What Nokia can learn from SONOS

SONOS has the highest customer approval ratings. Higher than Apple. There are many reasons, but one of the interesting ones is that the product gets better as you own it. SONOS keeps adding useful features. And they are rolled out to all customers at once. There is no "first on new devices, later on old ones, maybe". It does not matter whether your product is four years old. It gets the new feature immediately.
Nokia however plays the waiting game. They may ship new features on new phones, but if your device is only the second newest, good luck. The two programs above are only flagged for the 1020. If you have the 925, the bestest and newest available in Europe, they are not available. Until later.

Nokia & BlackBerry - sollte man die kaufen?

In den letzten paar Wochen bin ich mehrfach gefragt worden, ob man sich denn jetzt so ein Lumia kaufen sollte. Oder welchen BlackBerry. Also schreibe ich das mal für alle auf.
Ja, man sollte ein Lumia kaufen. Ohne Vorbehalt. Welches? Das 920. Und zwar, weil es eine Preisverzerrung gibt. Das 920 sollte nicht durch das 925 abgelöst werden, wurde es aber de facto. Deshalb sind die Preise für das 920 um 200 Euro gerutscht. Für gut 300 Euro ist das so ein Schnäppchen, dass es die anderen erdrückt. Wer auf LTE und ein HD-Display verzichten kann und dafür ein dünnes Handy haben will, der ist mit dem 720 gut beraten. Und wenn es ein Handy für die Kids sein soll, dann das 620.
Man sollte sich nicht von den Geschichten über die "bessere Kamera" im 925 blenden lassen. Das ist überwiegend Software, die das 920 im nächsten Monat auch kriegt. Die zusätzliche Linse verbessert die Randschärfe ein bisschen. Aber das ist für normale Menschen praktisch unsichtbar. Mit dem Amber Update werden die Farben knalliger und die Bilder sind schärfer. Damit ist das 920 nur vom 1020 deutlich zu schlagen. iPhone und Galaxy kommen nicht mal in die Nähe.
Gretchenfrage: und die Software? Für mich ist alles da außer dem Sonos Controller. Google zickt mit Microsoft rum. Das heißt mit Google Services wird man auf dem Lumia nicht glücklich. Dafür hat Nokia die beste Navigations-Suite, kostenlose Musik-Mixes und jede Menge anderer Goodies. Macht mal einen Aufschrieb, welche Apps Ihr jeden (!) Tag nutzt. Die sind beim Lumia wahrscheinlich schon an Bord, bevor auch nur irgendwas nachinstalliert wurde.
Sollte man ein BlackBerry kaufen? Ich weiß es nicht. Alles hängt davon ab, ob die Unternehmenskunden den Sprung auf BlackBerry 10 mitmachen. Und das weiß ich noch nicht. Ohne diese Kunden gibt es einfach nicht genug Drive in diesem Markt. In dem eben erwähnten Kamera-Thema spielen die BlackBerrys dicht unter der GS3-Ebene. iPhone und Nokia erreichen sie nicht. Aber dafür haben sie die beste Tastatur. Sowohl auf dem Glas (Z10) als auch in Hardware (Q10). Und welches nimmt man? Ich würde sagen das Z10. Der große Bildschirm macht mehr Spaß als das Q10. Und die fehlende Tastatur ist kaum ein Nachteil. Ein bisschen teurer als ein Lumia 920 wird das mit dem BlackBerry. Aber sie sind mittlerweile auch unter 400.
Nochmal die Gretchenfrage: und die Software? Die empfinde ich beim BlackBerry als nicht ausreichend. Das liegt vor allem an einer Abkürzung, die BlackBerry gemacht hat. Im Prinzip laufen dort nämlich alte Android Apps, die für Android 2.2 geschrieben wurden. Wenn der Programmierer sie portiert und in BlackBerry World anbietet. Den dicksten Vorteil kann der BlackBerry nur dann ausspielen, wenn die eigene Firma mitmacht. Eine sichere Trennung von geschäftlichen und privaten Daten geht nur mit dem BES10.

Smartphone-Bilder werden gerne verinstagrammt. Ich weiß nicht warum man das macht, aber mit Normalize kann man einiges retten. Abgekaute Ränder sind weg, und Farbe, die restlos entfernt wurde, kann man auch nicht wiederherstellen. Aber man kriegt wenigstens einen Eindruck davon, was vor der Kamera zu sehen war.

Nokia-Turnaround: Lumia überholt Blackberry

Damit aber erweist sich der Schritt von Nokia-Chef Stephen Elop zunehmend als richtig, beim Wechsel weg von dem seinerzeit bereits veralteten Symbian-Betriebssystem auf Windows Phone statt auf Android zu wechseln.

What is your ID? Google wants to own it. So does Facebook. Or Twitter. Or Microsoft.
The smaller players don't want to create their own IDs. Like Path or Last.fm, they just want to use your Facebook ID. WhatsApp used an ever better escape route: your mobile phone number. And thus, they can find all your friends on the network just by looking at your address book. That was their greatest strength.
And it is killing the service for me. Why? I have so many phone numbers. When traveling, I buy local SIMs and put them in my phone. You never know what my current number is. But you can always find vowe by his mail address.
Sonos adds Android streaming

Look for a small update in Google Play Store that takes your Android controller to version 4.1.1. It will show a new menu entry in Music. It will enable you to play music from your Android device on Sonos. That won't work with tracks stored in the cloud. You first have to download them and store on the device.
WeMo on Android

Tonight, Belkin has made a WeMo controller available for Android "phones on tablets". I can only install it on the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Play Store says it is not compatible with the Nexus 7, which may be a small mistake in the store. It's clearly a 1.0 version, since it has great difficulties finding my switches and motion sensors.
For US customers, Belkin now offers a WeMo light switch, which is supported by IFTTT like the other components. WeMo also has new parameters for "when": Sunset and Sunrise. Next on my wish list is Sunset+minutes.
Nokia announces Lumia 625 - a midrange 4.7" smartphone

You can read the specs here. Big non-HD screen larger than a 920/925, only half a gig of RAM, 8 gigs of storage, expandable with microSD. It's quite heavy at 159g (925 is 139). The 625 introduces LTE to midrange devices.
Available in Q3. Initially for 299 € which is close the current street price for a 920.
Leaving Google - one small step at a time

Google used to be the hub for my Internet use. Best search results, first usable web mail client, curator of my RSS feeds, central location for all mobile devices to sync up with, fast web browser and bookmarks synced across machines. I was a happy camper, a really happy camper. Google would work with everything I own. And everything I borrow. Setting up a new device was just a matter of adding Google account credentials.
When Google started to become Google+, I was aboard. It was simple and elegant. Google added stuff I did not care about, but it was easily ignored. Unlike Facebook there were no in your face games, no stupid poll apps. Sharing was easy, and you did not have to become friends with everybody who knew your name.
And then things started to fall apart. There were a number of tipping points. Even a year after launch, Google would not consider supporting mobile platforms beyond iOS and their own. The mobile web site got worse and worse. Then they dropped ActiveSync support from Gmail. Google Reader was shot in the head. And one by one, I had to find workarounds and solutions outside of the Google hemisphere. I started syncing Gmail with Outlook.com. I have months of emails, all contacts, my calendar on the Microsoft site. As soon as Microsoft supports the Mac with Outlook.com, I am ready to jump.
The latest tipping point was last week in New York. Google+ was inaccessible to me. It would not work on the Lumia, it would not work on the Yoga. Twitter and Facebook had no issues at all. My choice of a Google service had cut me off.
Time to make another decision.
I started taking a leave from Google+ last weekend. And woke up my Facebook account. And things look better than expected. Finally I have access to a social network from all my mobile devices. Friends on Facebook were very welcoming. A few dozen people who followed me on Google+ followed along. And on the upside, Facebook lets me share to (Facebook) public, so people who are not my friends can still join the discussion.
And while I was in the US, I used Bing and HERE instead of Google for search and maps. With excellent results. The German Bing site does not come close to what US users enjoy. But it might provide a glimpse into the future. And to the next small step.

BlackBerry‘s Discovery Service verwendet die Anmeldeinformationen, die durch den Benutzer zur Verfügung gestellt werden, um mit dem Mail-Server zu kommunizieren und sich mit diesem zu verbinden. Dieser Prozess wird durchgeführt um das Setup zu vereinfachen und ermöglicht BlackBerry, die verschiedenen Optionen für Server-Namen, Ports, Protokolle und Server-Optionen zu konfigurieren. Die Benutzerdaten werden lediglich während der Installation des Accounts verwendet, BlackBerry speichert keine Benutzernamen und Passwörter.
Dieser Vorgang ist in den Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen enthalten die der Nutzer akzeptiert, wenn er beginnt das Device zu benutzen. Kunden können den Discovery Service über die erweiterten Einstellungen umgehen, und die Eingabe aller erforderlichen Informationen zur Serverkonfiguration manuell tätigen.
Ich meine:
- Wäre gut, wenn das Endgerät das prüft und nicht der Server von BlackBerry. Können andere ja auch.
- Wer den BlackBerry Internet Service mit alten BlackBerrys verwendet, speichert schon immer sein Passwort bei BlackBerry.
Einfaches Rezept für ein gutes Smartphone

Bei BlackBerry und iOS gibt es ja nur einen Hersteller. Bei Android und Windows Phone dagegen mehrere. Also Konkurrenz im eigenen Garten.
Samsung ist sehr erfolgreich mit dem was sie tun. Aber das Ergebnis gefällt mir nicht. Gimmicks überall, Software, die mir im Weg rumsteht, Carrier Branding, wenig Updates, etc. Deshalb mein Mantra: wenn Android, dann Nexus. Problem dabei: keine sinnvolle Differenzierung.
Nokia ist auch sehr erfolgreich, allerdings in einem viel kleineren Garten. Und die machen es richtig. Solide Hardware, keine Gimmicks, keine Bloatware, alles original. Und dazu dann Differenzierung, die einen echten Mehrwert bringt. Zum Beispiel die HERE Suite oder viel bessere Fotografie.
Das muss sich jetzt nur noch rumsprechen.

Wie funktioniert eigentlich Verschlüsselung?

Die meisten Menschen können sich nicht recht vorstellen, wie Verschlüsselung funktioniert. Ich versuche mal, das mit möglichst wenigen Fachbegriffen zu erklären.
Wir wollen einen geheimen Klartext übertragen. Den drehen wir durch eine Mühle (Verschlüsselung), die einen Geheimtext ausspuckt. Den darf jetzt jeder lesen, weil das ein Buchstabensalat ist, den niemand versteht. Der Empfänger bildet aus dem Geheimtext durch Entschlüsselung wieder den Klartext. Verschlüsselung und Entschlüsselung nutzen bekannte, immer wieder geprüfte Verfahren.
Diese Verfahren benötigen einen Schlüssel. Das ist eine zufällige Zeichenkette. Je länger, desto besser. Es gibt nun zwei Möglichkeiten:
- Symmetrisch: Verschlüsselung und Entschlüsselung nutzen den selben Schlüssel. Dafür gibt es sehr effiziente Verfahren, die auch mit langen Schlüsseln superschnell funktionieren. Die haben aber einen Nachteil: ich muss (a) den Schlüssel auf geheimem Weg dem Empfänger übermitteln und (b) ich brauche für jede Kombination von Sender und Empfängern einen eigenen Schlüssel.
- Asymmetrisch: Verschlüsselung und Entschlüsselung nutzen ein Schlüsselpaar. Den geheimen Schlüssel kennt nur der Empfänger, den öffentlichen Schlüssel darf jeder wissen. Man erfragt nun vom Empfänger den öffentlichen Schlüssel und nutzt ihn, um den Klartext in den Geheimtext zu verwandeln. Der Empfänger nimmt seinen geheimen Schlüssel und bildet den Klartext. Vorteil: jeder Teilnehmer braucht nur ein Pärchen von Schlüsseln, um mit allen zu kommunizieren. Nachteil: diese Verfahren sind langsam und man muss jedem Empfänger seinen passenden Geheimtext schicken. Sehr ineffizient, wenn man mehr als einen Empfänger hat.
Deshalb setzt man eine Kombination der beiden Verfahren ein. Im ersten Schritt denkt sich der Sender irgendeinen Schlüssel für das erste Verfahren aus. Damit bildet er den Geheimtext. Den Schlüssel selbst übermittelt er zusammen mit dem Geheimtext an alle Empfänger, in dem er ihn jeweils mit dem öffentlichen Schlüssel des Empfängers mittels des zweiten Verfahrens verschlüsselt. Die Nachricht enthält also den Geheimtext der Nachricht und die Geheimtexte des Schlüssels und zwar so viele, wie die Nachricht Empfänger hat.
Warum funktionieren diese Verfahren nicht rückwärts? Warum kann man aus dem Geheimtext nicht auf den Klartext schließen, ohne den Schlüssel zu haben? Die Verfahren nutzen mathematische Funktionen, die in einer Richtung einfach gehen, in der anderen aber aufwändig sind.
Ein Beispiel: 28411 und 45491 sind Primzahlen. Das heißt, sie sind nicht teilbar (außer durch 1 und sich selbst). Multipliziere ich die beiden Zahlen, bekomme ich eine neue Zahl: 1292444801. Geht ganz schnell. Wenn ich jetzt aber rausfinden will, durch welche Zahlen ich 1292444801 teilen kann, muss ich sehr lange ausprobieren, bis ich eine der beiden Primzahlen gefunden habe. Kenne ich eine von beiden, teile ich zum Beispiel durch 28411, dann kommt 45491 raus.
Verschlüsselungsverfahren nutzen jetzt eine ganze Folge solcher Berechnungen, um Falltüren zu erzeugen, in denen es nur vorwärts, aber nicht rückwärts geht. Wie kann man das System überlisten? Es gibt nur zwei sinnvolle Möglichkeiten: ich verrate den geheimen Schlüssel des ersten Verfahrens, etwa durch eine Hintertür in der Software. Oder ich baue einen sehr, sehr schnellen Computer, der das Verfahren doch rückwärts kann.
Und dann gibt es noch eine ganz einfache Attacke, die mit der Bequemlichkeit des Nutzer spielt. Ich klaue dem Empfänger den ungeschützten geheimen Schlüssel. Also, ich nehme ihn nicht weg. Ich mache eine Kopie.
Ein paar unbequeme Wahrheiten

Das gefährlichste, was es gibt, ist ein bisschen Wissen. Da schreiben dann Autoren die '10 besten Tipps, um sich der Überwachung zu entziehen'. Also machen wir aus ein bisschen Wissen mal etwas mehr Wissen.
- De-Mail ist nicht sicher. Es geht nicht darum, dass niemand mitlesen kann. Es geht darum, den Absender und Empfänger rechtssicher erkennen zu können und eine Willenserklärung zuordnen zu können. Das System ist als Webmail konzipiert. Der Server weiß alles.
- Wer Mails verschlüsselt, der verschlüsselt den Inhalt, nicht den Umschlag. Es bleibt nachvollziehbar, wer an wen zu welchem Thema schreibt, von wo aus, mit welchem Programm, etc. Wer kann seinen Schlüssel so bewachen, dass niemand eine Kopie anfertigen kann?
- Bei jeder Kommunikation gibt es mindestens zwei Beteiligte. Es nützt nichts, wenn einer von ihnen sicher kommunizieren will. Man greift stets das schwächste Glied an.
- Geräte, die ihre Inhalte verschlüsseln, bewahren den Schlüssel im Gerät, also "unter der Fußmatte" auf. Dort wird er mit dem Passwort gesichert. Wer benutzt gute Passwörter? Also lange Passwörter mit großer Entropie?
- Interessant ist selten die einzelne Nachricht, sondern das "große Ganze", also das Profil. Wer mit wem, wie oft. Da helfen Pseudonyme nullkommagarnichts. Nur mit extremer Vorsicht kann man mehrere Identitäten trennen. Für Amateure halt ich das für nicht machbar.
- Verschlüsselung braucht Infrastruktur. Schlüsselserver sind dabei ideal, um das Beziehungsgeflecht abzugreifen.
Interessanter fände ich eine andere Diskussion. Was macht man mit diesen Datenmengen? Im Guten wird das eingesetzt, um Nadeln in einem riesigen Heuhaufen zu finden. Das wird nicht dadurch einfacher, dass man den Haufen größer macht. Aber man kann die Waffe auch rumdrehen. Und findet statt 'ein bisschen über alle' dann 'alles über einen'. Surface

Marco fragt 'was ist denn genau an Surface so fein?'. Ich weiß es nicht. Aber es ist abends die letzte Maschine, die ich angucke und morgens die erste, wo ich reinschaue. Das war mal das Nexus 7, aber Google hat eigentlich alles systematisch kaputt gemacht, was ich daran mochte. Es ging los mit dem Reader, dann erzählte mir Google Now immer wieder was zu meinem Arbeitsweg (man sieht, Google weiß auch nicht alles), dann wurde Google+ unbenutzbar.
Mittlerweile nutze ich vor allem Skydrive, habe Facebook wieder aktiviert, nutze Twitter mehr. Bis auf die Schnarchnasen bei Sonos arbeiten alle wunderbar mit Surface und Lumia. Als ich in New York war, blieb Surface hier und das Yoga musste mit. Das hat die bessere Tastatur und geht auf dem Schoß. Surface hat dann als Bilderrahmen zu Hause alle Fotos angezeigt, die ich mit dem Lumia geschossen habe und automatisch in Skydrive geladen habe.
Zurück zu Windows? Nicht dem alten. Aber die Kacheln mag ich. Ich weiß, ich bin komisch. :-)

Chat isn't working for me

AOL Messenger, Microsoft Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Sametime, Apple Messages, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, GTalk, Hangouts, BlackBerry Messenger, Nokia Chat. They all work great, and they don't work together. Some of them work on PCs, some on mobiles, some on both. Some have their own signup, some use phone numbers, some use other services' authentication. If you happen to know my ID and you are on my buddy list, you can send me a message. If one of my devices is online, it will take your message. But in most cases, I will not know until a few days later.
Some of this confusion is my own fault. I have way too many machines. And way too many phone numbers. Just bought a new one last week from T-Mobile USA.
What do you do? Send me an email. That's universal. It reaches me on all my machines. If you don't get a reply, I am currently not available. Or your message did not require an answer.
Kühler Dyson

Der heiße Dyson wird bei diesem Wetter zum kühlen Dyson. Im Winter stand er auf dem Boden und hat schnell Wärme gespendet, wenn mir mal kalt war. Nun ist er auf den Tisch ungezogen und verteilt kühle Luft. Das Modell AM04 gibt es gar nicht mehr. Es wurde durch den AM05 abgelöst, der etwas mehr Leistung hat, ohne lauter zu werden. Da ich das Gerät meistens nur in der kleinsten Stufe betreiben, empfinde ich meinen nicht als veraltet.
Als reinen Lüfter würde ich wahrscheinlich zum AM02 greifen, der wenig Platz benötigt und große Luftmengen bewegen kann.

Google minus

When Google+ launched, it was the social I liked. I met lots of interesting people, had great discussions. There were only clients for iOS and Android, but hey, that's OK in the early days. The website was great, it would even work in HTML5 mobile browsers.
Two years later, things have changed to the worse. The apps have gotten huge and slow, the site itself has become unusable on most of my devices. I can access Google+ from the iPhone 5, from the Galaxy S4, but not from BlackBerry or Lumia. It is completely unusable from Surface and Yoga.
Back at Facebook, things have improved considerably. It has gained all the features I loved in Google+. Being able to delete comments, block users, tune down posts for some people in my newsfeed. It's all there.
Time for a change. I am taking a leave from Google+.

Allerdings sind dies oft nur bruchstückartige Hinweise und keine wirklichen Anleitungen. In diesem Artikel möchte ich daher eine Art Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung liefern, wie Sie die Überwachung mit Nagios einrichten.
Google needs some clue procurement

Ideally, Google+ would layer itself on top of Google’s existing services, letting you share certain information (such as your location, in the case of Latitude) with the social circles of your choosing. Instead, Google keeps demolishing these services and stuffing their features into an increasingly bloated Google+.
Both the G+ site and the apps become increasingly buggy and unreliable. I could not really use the service while away.
Back from New York

After spending two nights in a hotel bed and one night in coach on United, I have returned from New York. What a trip. Nokia announced the Lumia 1020, and all the news had leaked before the event. And still, it was worth the effort. A couple of observations:
- Roaming is expensive, especially for data. We tried buying a SIM from AT&T and the experience was awful. You walk into a store at TImes Square and they ask "do you have an appointment?". Two blocks to the west, a small T-Mobile outlet - what a contrast. A very friendly and helpful rep got us started in minutes. He helped to config Oliver's iPhone 5 with the correct APN settings and we were ready in no time. Unlimited calls, texts and data, first 200 MB data at 4G speed, on $3 a day, prepaid. Perfect for short stints in the US. I had to get one for myself and the Lumia 925 did not need any intervention from the sales rep. Replace the SIM, reboot, and it was all working without any setup. I paid $10 for the SIM, added $10 for three days. Next time, I just need to add funds for a few days.
- I brought the Lumia 925, the 808 Pureview and the Yoga. The 808 was just a backup and I did all my work on the 925. What an amazing camera. I traveled with a carry-on suitcase, but frankly, a small backpack with clothes for two days, a charger, two external batteries, and a small tripod would have been all I needed. Throw in a small bluetooth keyboard for longer texts in Microsoft Word on the Lumia, and I would not even have needed the Yoga.
- The invisible backbone for all of this is Skydrive. Integration into Windows (Phone) 8 - and the Mac btw - is just perfect. While I am working it uploads photos and videos, and I just move them into the folders I share with my colleagues from c't and Techstage. The collaboration has been outstanding. A huge thank you to Dr. Volker Zota (vza).
- The Nokia event was huge. Excellent keynote presented by Stephen Elop, Juha Alakarhu and Kristina Björknäs. Flawless Wifi network, an engaging hands-on area, all the product managers on-site. I have no idea how you could improve an event like this. You get there thinking you know it all, and then you start learning. Meeting all those dedicated people and having the opportunity to speak with them at length makes it worthwhile to endure the air travel and jetlag.
- Two tourist tips: avoid The Ride and do visit Top of the Rock.

Nokia Lumia 1020 - Initial Impressions

Before flying to New York I thought that Nokia would take the camera from the 808, add OIS (optical image stabilization) from the Lumia 920, and squeeze it all into the body of a 920, adding a huge hump to the back. The pregnant 920 so to speak. Even bulkier and heavier. Boy, was I in for a surprise.
First of all, the 1020 is considerably lighter than the 920. Even with the big camera. And it's not top-heavy like the 808. The camera is completely redesigned. From the back-illuminated sensor, to the new optics, a different OIS, and of course a new software stack. Some of that software, like the Camera Pro, which gives you access to all the parameters like shutter speed, ISO, etc. will be made available as a download for the 920.
What you don't get is a neat trick, that Nokia uses with the huge sensor. Other than the 808 it always shoots full resolution photos and stores them. Then it will apply your zoom factor and create a five megapixel photo of much higher quality than a 5 MP sensor could reproduce. In fact, it is much sharper than an 8 MP photo. And you only get to see this photo, share it, upload it, etc.
But then you can reframe it and tell a different story. Camera Pro goes back to the original full resolution photo and lets you create a new zoom of a completely different area. You can turn and crop the photo and save it as a new 5 MP photo. The original full resolution photo does not get changed in that process. And when you hook the Lumia up to a PC/Mac, you get to see both the 5 MP image and the original.
In essence: you shoot first, and think later. It gives you the opportunity to quickly shoot a photo and use it in a completely different way when you had time to think about it. That feature alone makes me want to have this device.
On top of that you get manual focus, exposure control, white balance. And they are all live. You can see what you are doing, right on the screen.
As for peripherals, Nokia makes a wireless charging cover, like I use on the 925. It will only come in black and yellow. The phone itself also comes in white, as does the camera cover, which adds an additional battery, a two stage shutter release, a tripod thread, and it's own USB port to charge it. I would want this accessory for a day like this, but it would not carry it all the time.

Auch mal auf den Preis gucken

Die Verkaufszahlen der Nokias ziehen langsam an und das sehen viele Experten als Anzeichen, dass der Plan nun aufgeht. Was ich selbst beobachte, finde ich aber viel ermutigender. Die Leute sind neugierig, wenn man ein Lumia aus der Tasche zieht. Das mutige Design kommt an und auch Windows Phone führt mittlerweile zu wohlwollendem Kopfnicken.
Und dann wäre da noch der Preis. Das kosten die Lumias mittlerweile "im Internet":
- 158 € (Lumia 520)
- 177 € (Lumia 620)
- 246 € (Lumia 820)
- 285 € (Lumia 720)
- 334 € (Lumia 920)
Für 158 € kriegt man kein Android-Telefon, das man haben möchte. Und für 334 € gibt es keine vergleichbare Kamera mit einem weltweit funktionierenden Navi. Mein persönlicher Geheimtipp ist das knuffige 620 in blau oder weiß. Wer etwas mehr Geld ausgeben kann, der findet den besten Kompromiss im 720. Und wer dann noch LTE, ein HD-Display und die beste Kamera überhaupt haben will, der wird das 920 zum halben iPhone-Preis ziemlich gut finden.
Und die Software? Die kommt langsam aus den Puschen. Letzte Woche Lufthansa, diese Woche Spotify. Mir fehlt nur noch ein Controller von Sonos. Aber die enttäuschen mich gerade auch an anderen Stellen, was die Software angeht.
Was mich persönlich angeht, schleppe ich jetzt schon das 920 mit, seit es das gibt. Neuerdings ein 925, die schlankere Version mit neuerer Software. Das funktioniert, ohne Macken, und geht auch nicht kaputt, wenn es mal runterfällt. Das 920 mag ein bisschen dicker sein, aber das bin ich auch. ;-) Die Nokias sind (außer dem Q10) die einzigen Smartphones, auf die ich mich ohne Bedenken draufsetze.
Was übrigens richtig gut funktioniert und nicht oft erwähnt wird, ist die Integration in Skydrive. Alle Fotos und Videos lade ich automatisch dort hin, jedesmal, wenn das Gerät Wifi sieht. Und die synchronisieren sauber auf den Mac. Im Dateinamen steckt schon das Datum. Von Skydrive aus kann ich Videos gleich mit den Kollegen bei c't sharen, ohne sie noch einmal irgendwo hochzuladen.

Heinerfest - TU Special

Die Universität, traditionell durch das Residenzschloss im Zentrum des jährlichen Heinerfestes, mischt in diesem Jahr noch stärker mit beim Riesen-Spektakel. Vom Freitag, 5. Juli, bis Sonntag, 7. Juli gibt es im östlichen Schlossgraben (Zugang über die Wallbrücke am Karolinenplatz) jeweils von 17 bis 23 Uhr ein besonderes Programm. Architektinnen und Fachplanerinnen des Dezernats Bau der TU Darmstadt werden, teils in historische Gewänder gekleidet, über die 200-jährige Geschichte der Grünanlage und die Nutzung als öffentlicher Park ab dem kommenden Jahr informieren. Details wie die künftige Lage des Schlossgarten-Teiches werden mit künstlichen Enten gekennzeichnet, farbliche Markierungen geben einen Vorgeschmack auf die Anordnung der Pflanz-Beete, Baumbestände, botanischen Besonderheiten und des Wegenetzes. Doch das ist längst nicht alles beim "HeinerTreff" im Schlossgraben: Heiteres und Besinnliches rund um das Darmstädter Residenzschloss wird Günter Körner in Mundart am Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag jeweils von 17.30 bis 18.30 Uhr vortragen. An diesen Tagen beginnt dann ab 20.30 Uhr jeweils ein Jazz-Konzert vom Feinsten. Veranstalter ist der Förderverein Darmstädter Heiner e. V. gemeinsam mit dem Förderverein Jazz Darmstadt. Und mit weiteren Programmpunkten ist die TU Darmstadt beim Heinerfest präsent: Am Freitag startet um 17.30 Uhr ab dem karo5, dem Eingang zur Universität am Karolinenplatz, eine 90-minütige Führung über den Campus Innenstadt, der aufgrund vieler Neubauten spannende neue Eindrücke vermittelt. Dazu lädt das Alumni-Management der TU Darmstadt ein. Schließlich markieren am Montag um 21.00 Uhr die "Schlosskeller DJs" im StudentInnenkeller im Schloss mit ihrer Abschlussparty den Anfang vom Ende des Heinerfestes 2013.
