Belkin QODE Ultimate Keyboard Case for iPad Air

by Volker Weber

ZZ3A83172A

Belkin has a new breed of keyboard cases for tablets and they are calling them QODE. I am testing the Ultimate version, which is the most expensive choice. There is one item on the marketing agenda I find pretty funny:

Made of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, the QODE Ultimate Keyboard Case is lighter than the iPad itself.

It's just barely lighter. You could not tell the difference without a scale. Let's just say you double the weight of your iPad. With that in mind, you also get great protection. When you fold the keyboard on top of the iPad, it's safe. No need for any other case. Just throw it in the bag and it will stay closed. In fact, it almost looks like a very slim netbook when closed.

When you open the lid, you can pull the underside of the iPad towards you and stick it to the top of the keyboard in three positions, where it is held with strong magnets. This lets you adjust the angle. If you pull it all the way towards you, the keyboard rests against the back of the case, and you can use the iPad as a tablet. I would only do this briefly as needed. It's much easier to remove the iPad completely and use it without the case.

ZZ71E86F97

When you buy a keyboard, you have to look into this corner. This is where they compromise the layout to make it fit. The Ä character is in the wrong row, and that will cause typos in German. In order to maintain the proper key size, the keyboard misses one column. Look at your own keyboard to see the difference. Belkin made some good choices with the right Shift key, the Enter key and the cursor keys, so I can live with that compromise.

The rest of the package is flawless. They keyboard switches on and off automatically as needed, it gives you the full five rows instead of compromising with the numbers row, battery life cannot be tested without going for half a year of usage. If you want to turn your iPad into a convertible netbook once in a while, this is it.

ZZ0E73165F

I am waiting for the third QODE model to come out. I did not like the Slim Style because it needs a table with a lot of space. What I really want is the Thin Type. Not a lot of protection like the Ultimate, but minimum weight and only attached when needed.

Is the Internet a Mob Without Consequence?

by Volker Weber

Nick Bilton:

The immediacy and fast pace of the Internet can be magical. But when someone makes a comment that the masses disagree with, a mob with 140-character pitchforks can develop in seconds and the Internet can become terrifyingly bellicose.

I have been hunted by mobs before. Lucky for me, those lived in a small filter bubble. One person has apologized, exactly one. The one I least expected to. Thank you, Scott.

vowe's choice 2013

by Volker Weber

ZZ36F111EF.jpg

I have seen and used a lot of great products in 2013. The Sonos Playbar has kicked up the TV to cinema level sound. The iPhone 5S finally brought convenience to PIN-locked phones. The iPad Air made me fall in love again with full sized iPads. The Lenovo Yoga 11 replaced an aging MacBook Pro, but was superseeded by the 13" Retina MacBook Pro. BlackBerry started out great with their new line of BB 10 devices, and then failed to sell them.

There is one device however, that stood out from the rest. It's the Nokia Lumia 1020. A lot of my work depends on photos and videos. I have been an early DSLR user, my first digital camera was a Casio QV-10. I own quite a few cameras from Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm. And yet, all of my professional photos are now shot with the Lumia 1020. It's that good.

But it's not only a good camera. Windows Phone has gained a lot of momentum in 2013. I now have every single piece of software on the 1020, that I would need, with one glaring omission: Sonos has proven itself as a laggard in software development. I love the devices but they need to put more effort in the controller side of things. No Windows Phone controller, no modern Windows controller, no iOS 7 optimized controller. I don't have information to share but I am pretty sure this will soon change.

The Lumia 1020 is the winner in 2013, across all devices I have used. What will 2014 bring?

Allianz to hand over their IT operations to IBM

by Volker Weber

MUNICH, Germany - 20 Dec 2013: Today, Allianz and IBM (NYSE: IBM) concluded an agreement in Munich regarding support for the operation of Allianz's data centers. IBM will be acting as the global provider of IT operation services for Allianz in effect from April 1, 2014, supporting the transformation of the company's global IT infrastructure. Allianz expects to have completed the transfer to the new IT infrastructure and its operation in full by the end of 2017.

That's almost four years of transition.

Allianz currently has 140 data centers worldwide and plans to consolidate and reduce these to six data centers.

Prediction: they will find a lot more data centers than 140 and they will also find out that six are not enough.

Nokia universal portable USB charger DC-19

by Volker Weber

ZZ6F9B329A

Nokia's portable chargers just got a little bigger. That's right. They yellow DC-19 is 3200 mAh, the cyan and black DC-16 are only 2000 mAh. Both USB plugs are now on the same end, the other end gets a larger button to switch it on and check the battery level.

ZZ6CB5D780

The DC-16 have been my most used portable chargers throughout last year. It's good to have them in assorted colors, since I can easily remember which ones I have used. I also use them to drive my Belkin travel router which then turns any ethernet cable into an access point without requiring a power wall outlet.

BlackBerry smartphones sales in one handy chart

by Volker Weber

ZZ79BE9DF8

BlackBerry reports they sold 1.9 million smartphones in their third quarter, down from 3.7 million in the previous quarter. Since not all quarters are created equal, it's better to compare year over year. The blue curve is last year, the green curve is this year. This looks like BlackBerry 10 is a burning platform.

Kleine Geschenke mit (einem) Kabel

by Volker Weber

ZZ35A4A86F

4 A bei 5 V gibt das Ladegerät her.

Facebook to Sell Video Ads

by Volker Weber

Facebook Inc. will begin selling video advertisements later this week, according to people familiar with the matter.

The ads, which will play automatically in users' news feeds may help Facebook capture a share of the $66.4 billion advertisers are expected to spend on U.S. television this year.

The big experiment continues. How much can you annoy users before they call it quits.

Successful switch

by Volker Weber

6 by 4

This wasn't easy at all. I became very attached to the Lumia 1520. It's an all-in-one device. Phone, tablet, camera. Whenever I tried to go back to the 1020, I was losing the tablet, losing resolution, losing Nokia Black, the latest version of Windows Phone. The screen on the 1520 is simply amazing, the device itself is very thin and easy to hold. Yes, the camera on the 1020 is best in class, but the 1520 comes pretty close. So, I could not make it to the 1020. No way.

But then I had to move the only NanoSIM that was still working from the 1520 to the iPhone 5S, and that lead to a new situation. The iPhone is excellent in its own right. It's incredibly light and tiny compared to my other machines, its camera is not as good as the Lumia's, but it's fast. iOS gets the latest app innovations first, so there is more to play with.

And by going to the iPhone, the 1020 became interesting again. Suddenly it was no longer small. After one day with the iPhone I switched the 1020 back on. 20 app updates rolled in. And there are a couple of apps on Windows Phone that I prefer to their iOS equivalents. 6tag is nicer than Instagram, Grin is much nicer than Imgur, NextGen Reader is the best news reader out there, on any platform. Conventional wisdom says I should be drawn to iOS because of the apps, but the opposite is true. My Windows Phone apps are nicer than what I am using on iOS and those are way nicer than their Android peers. With nicer, I don't mean more powerful. Just more useful to me.

People who switch to Windows Phone take a while to use it's strength. You have to learn new ways and unlearn a few old habits. Once you learned the new tricks, you miss them everywhere else. I am a heavy user of the people hub and its ability to summarize all activities of one person and pin that information to a tile on the front page. I prefer the mail UI to other clients; being able to swipe instead of hitting buttons (which no longer look like buttons in iOS7) is a huge benefit. And finally, wireless charging and an always on clock on the front page are sorely missed.

I am currently alternating between iPhone and 1020. But I do have to avoid to switch the 1520 back on. It's that good. It only fails one use case: one-handed operation.

Outlook.com can now import all your Gmail data

by Volker Weber

I like Outlook.com. It has a far better UI than Gmail, it lets you use your own mail address, even on mobile devices. It supports Exchange ActiveSync, so it works with all mobile devices. Now it gets a migration assistant that picks up all your Gmail data and drops it into your Outlook.com account:

Today, we are announcing a new service that makes it easier than ever to import your Gmail account to Outlook.com. This will be rolling out to everyone over the coming weeks, so if you don't have access to it yet, check back soon.

Since Outlook.com has started providing IMAP access, you can even access it from your desktop. If Microsoft would go all the way and also provide CalDAV and CardDAV, then I could switch. I do not want to use Outlook, the client.

Dyson Forte

by Volker Weber

ZZ71751791

ZZ58776314

Was man halt so in einer Viertelstunde schafft.

Returning the Yoga 2 Pro

by Volker Weber

ZZ1B67A6CE.jpg

After two weeks with the Yoga 2 Pro, the machine has returned to home base. I have come to the conclusion that while it's a wonderful machine, it's not for me. If this were my only computer then I would love it. But it's not.

When I want to get serious work done, I am relying on two Macs. One has just been replaced two days ago. It estimated it would take four hours to migrate, but then it only took two. I have had the Yoga for two weeks and would not get to the same level of productivity. That is not a general statement but just an observation of how things are at vowe's magic flying circus.

I will continue to enrich my work experience with other machines running iOS, Windows RT and Android. Maybe one of these days I might even come across a Chrome notebook. But a full Windows machine adds way too much complexity to an otherwise very simple world.

The Yoga 2 gets replaced by the original Yoga 11. Sometimes less is more.

The big rotation

by Volker Weber

ZZ2ADCE384

It's an early Xmas at vowe's magic flying circus and there is a new machine in the house, a 13" MacBook Pro Retina. This brings upon a big rotation:

  1. MacBook Pro Retina replaces MacBook Pro
  2. MacBook Pro replaces iMac
  3. iMac retires

imac g4

The iMac that retires is Lucy, my first Mac. It has been in continuous operation since the end of 2002. 11 years old and still useful. I don't know yet what to do with it, but it's not heading for the trash.

Six to four

by Volker Weber

6 by 4

After just a few weeks on the Lumia 1520 I am struggling to get back on a smaller screen. The thing is, once you have a large screen like this, smaller devices feel very constrained. And then you need to use a phone and a tablet. With the bigger screen, you only need one. I believe that Apple needs to keep the 4" iPhone form factor, but add a 6" model. It would fit right between the iPhone and the iPad Mini.

Geschenke

by Volker Weber

Things that worked for me in 2013

by Volker Weber

ZZ051D7888

The year isn't over, but most of my work is done. Time to reflect on a few things that worked well for me this year. And maybe a few things that didn't.

So, a lot more Windows this year. Mac is still my mainstay and is going to be in the future. I seem to be one of the few people who "get" Windows RT. Maybe Microsoft will notice and they send a new Surface 2, RT of course. Lumia wins. Big time. And I need to reflect a bit more on the 1520. It's big, in a good way.
