GoPro Accessories

GoPro ist eine Kamera. Und ein Anschluss an jede Menge Zubehör. So habe ich mich diese Woche über zwei Stativadapter, eine Halterung für den Kopf und eine Klammer gefreut, die mir zwei freundliche Leser von meiner Wunschliste geschickt haben. Vielen herzlichen Dank! Ihr wisst, wer gemeint ist.
Ich habe die GoPro jetzt mal an den Hund gehängt. Der bewegt sich aber viel zu hektisch, so dass einem beim Betrachten des Videos schlecht wird. Ich bin nicht sicher, dass das hier besser funktioniert. Zumindest würde sie nicht so baumeln:

Ich bin kein App-Junkie, aber ab und zu kommt ein Programm, an dem ich sofort großen Spaß habe und das ich dann nicht mehr missen möchte. Instagram Hyperlapse ist so eine Software.
Hyperlapse nutzt die Bewegungssensoren, um ein Video elektronisch zu stabilisieren. Dazu hat es noch einen Zeitraffer, mit dem man das Video nachträglich beschleunigen kann. Einfach ausprobieren, die Bedienung ist supersimpel. Man kann das Ergebnis sharen, man muss aber nicht.
Und bitte, Handy im Querformat. Damit kann man echt mehr anfangen. ;-)
Microsoft baut auch sowas, hat es aber noch nicht fertig. Und Microsoft nimmt einen anderen Weg. Dort werden die Bilder analysiert, was für ein Smartphone viel zu aufwändig ist. Hier geht es also um Nachbearbeitung.
Programmierer sind keine Designer

Links sieht man mensa_da, rechts das neue mensa_da+. Ich nenne es gerne mensa_da-, weil auf einmal alles viel schlechter lesbar ist und völlig aus dem Design des Windows Phone herausfällt. Ich bin dankbar für die App und halte sie auch für die beste App für Windows Phone. Und ich werde die alte Version so lange nutzen, wie sie noch unterstützt wird.
Der Programmierer ist etwas hilflos, weil es andere User gibt, die das neue Design positiv aufnehmen. Er hat auch schon vorgeschlagen, beide parallel zu implementieren. Das ist meiner Ansicht nach das Schlimmste, was man machen kann. Wer jedes Feedback umsetzt, wird sich vollkommen verstricken.

Track your App Store reviews

As a developer you need to keep track of the reviews your apps are getting. Reading those reviews is about as much fun as reading comments on a popular website. And you have to do it in all regional stores, even if you don't understand the language.
This is where Reviews for iOS steps in. It keeps track of new reviews and it will even translate them for you. Reviews looks like a must-have tool for all developers. Very clever.
How I make Twitter work for me

I am running a tight Twitter ship with following only 120something accounts. Lots of bots, lots of smart people. It takes some efforts to keep my stream clean, so here are some of my ground rules.
- Some people write interesting tweets, but they also retweet lots of other tweets, for purposes that may serve them, but not me. Simple remedy: go to their profile, hit the gear button, disable retweets.
- In order to make money, Twitter uses native advertising. Ads that look like native tweets, followed by a 'sponsored by tagline'. If the ad is from an account I follow, it was a waste of money. If I do not follow the particular account, I block and mark it as a spam account.
- Now Twitter has started to fill my feed with tweets they find interesting but I don't. For each of those tweets I block the account the tweet was originating from.
As Twitter dials up their abuse, one day I will stop using it. Like I did with Google+ and Facebook. How could this be solved? Freemium. Let me pay for a clean experience. As it stands today, the business works like prostitution. You get fcuked, somebody else gets the money.

The first million was the hardest. Another half a million went by in 33 days. My average over four month is still in the vicinity of 10000 steps a day. My current average over 7 days is beyond 20000. Today was a brilliant day. Beautiful sunshine, no heat, no rain. What a chance to clock in 30000.
When this all started I was able to walk a few hundred meter. Now I can go 25 km. That's more than 15 miles for my non-metric friends. ;-) I lost more than 30 pounds in the process, but that's only a secondary goal. The primary goal is exercise.
Three helpers: better shoes, a tireless walking coach, and a lubricant.
AirSonos on Netgear ReadyNAS

Yesterday, I talked about AirSonos and how it lets you stream via AirTunes to SONOS players. Biggest downside: you need to have a computer running at all times. As it turns out, I have one computer running at all times: my Netgear ReadyNAS Pro.
I asked Stefan Rubner, my ReadyNAS guru, if it is feasible to run AirSonos on ReadyNAS. He asked whether I was on ReadyNAS OS 4 or 6. I am on OS 4, since my box is already a couple of years old. That meant he had to port lots of packages back to OS 4, but he made it work.
There is only a small limitation, which means that you redirect all of your Mac's output to the Sonos player.
When playing from a Mac, direct streaming from iTunes is currently not supported. To work around this, hold the “alt” key and click on the speaker icon in your menu bar. Select the “Airsonos @ __” device as the output device and then start iTunes. Streaming to your Sonos device should now work as expected.

Fassungslos

Was mich an den Bildern aus Ferguson fassungslos macht, ist der Umgang mit Waffen. Dabei sollte man gerade bei den amerikanischen Waffennarren erwarten, dass sie damit umgehen können.
Was weiß ich darüber? Ich bin an vier Schusswaffen ausgebildet und habe damit geschossen: Pistole, Maschinenpistole, Sturmgewehr, Maschinengewehr. Anders als die Generation vor mir musste ich niemals auf einen Menschen zielen, ihn verletzen oder gar töten. Für Leser, die diese Ausbildung nicht haben, ein paar Erklärungen:
- Es gibt drei Zustände einer Waffe: ungeladen, teilgeladen, fertiggeladen. Ungeladen heißt, es ist keine Munition in der Waffe. Teilgeladen heißt, die Waffe ist geladen aber nicht schussbereit. Fertiggeladen heißt, mit dem Abzug kann man einen Schuss auslösen. Unabhängig davon haben die meisten Waffen noch eine Sicherung.
- Es ist völlig unsinnig, mit einer ungeladenen oder teilgeladenen Waffe zu zielen. Die Waffe ist nicht schussbereit. Man muss also ohnehin erneut zielen.
- Ein ausgebildeter Soldat wird nur dann zielen, wenn er auch schießen wird. Das heißt, seine Waffe ist fertiggeladen und ungesichert.
- Will der ausgebildete Soldat drohen, aber noch nicht schießen, trägt er eine teilgeladene und gesicherte Waffe, Hand am Abzug, Mündung gesenkt. Dann gibt es mehrere Eskalationen: fertigladen, entsichern. Aber immer bleibt die Waffe gesenkt.*
- Die Präzision einer Waffe hängt stark von der Körperhaltung des Schützen ab. Liegen, sitzen, stehen, gehen, laufen, in der Reihenfolge wird es immer schlechter. Der Tatortkommissar, der im Laufen mit einer Pistole einen Reifen zerschießt, gewinnt auch spielend jedesmal im Lotto.
Mit diesem Wissen schaut man sich mal die Polizistendarsteller in Ferguson an. Die gehen (!) mit Waffe im Anschlag und zielen (!) auf Demonstranten (!). Entweder sind die ahnungslos, oder sie tun nur so als ob, oder sie sind völlig durchgeknallt. Ich befürchte letzteres.
Dazu kommt noch etwas, das uns in Deutschland völlig fremd ist. Ein amerikanischer Polizist ist kein Profi, der jahrelang ausgebildet wird. Das ist ein Hilfsarbeiter, der in eine Uniform gesteckt wird. Mit einem Ausbildungsstand, den man von Sicherheitskontrollen am Flughafen kennt.
*) Es gibt eine Ausnahme. Zielfernrohre werden auch als Fernrohr genutzt, wenn man nicht schießen will.
SONOS ZP100 and ZP80 :: Eight years and still going strong

These two players are more than 8 years old. And they have been used throughout most of those 8 years. I just replaced the ZP100 with a ZP120. And the ZP80 has been used for many years as a "first shot" to convince people they really really want the SONOS experience.
Nothing wrong with the ZP100. But I want to free it up for people who want everything possible. This is the only SONOS player that has everything. You can connect two speakers. You have Line-Out and Line-In. And a SUB out. It also has the original four port embedded switch. The ZP80 has digital out, both optical and coax but no amplifier, and thus no speaker.
AirSonos

Heute kommen x Anfragen, ob ich auch schon das sensationelle AirSonos kenne. Was macht das Ding? Es terminiert Airplay-Verbindungen und schickt den Sound an SONOS-Player. Das klingt gut, hat aber ein paar Nachteile:
- Für AirSonos muss dauernd ein Rechner laufen. Einschlafen ist nicht.
- Das ist ein Hack, der gegen Apple wettet. Airplay muss man lizenzieren und einen Chip bei Apple kaufen und verbauen. Deshalb ist das Ansinnen, SONOS könne das ja bestimmt auch implementieren, von einer gewissen Naivität geprägt.
- SONOS-Player sind autark. Sie holen sich die Musik immer von einer Quelle und spielen sie ab. Das ist auchbei der Integration von Google Play Music so, selbst wenn der Laie das nicht sofort erkennt. Mit Airplay dagegen muss jemand pushen.
Wer das gerne mal probieren möchte, findet AirSonos auf Github. Ich habe die professionelle Lösung mit einem Apple Airport Express. Und nutze sie praktisch nie.

Moving UP

Two years ago I started a program "Twenty three and a half hours". The idea was you need to exercise at least 30 minutes a day to stay healthy. This year I restarted in the middle of April, six weeks after my fall at CeBIT. Within 4 months, I am already far ahead of my schedule. I am stronger than ever, and my walking is only restrained by the blisters I acquire. I am still very much overweight, but I converted a lot of body mass into muscles. Weight-loss does happen, but it's not the primary goal.
What has changed? I am tracking with a Jawbone UP and I have a personal trainer. She's three years old and runs like hell. Today was a good day with an extra 10k in the evening to break in new shoes:

Erst RCS-e (Rich Communications Suite enhanced), umbenannt zu Joyn. Nun SIMSme. Und wenn es dann nicht funktioniert, kann man es nach fünf Jahren immer noch platt machen, wie etwa die lebenslange Email-Adresse von ePost. Den Kunden wurde damals der Umstieg auf Lycos empfohlen.
Warum fünf Jahre? Das ist der typische Horizont von Investitionsplänen. Dann braucht man frische Budgets und Misserfolge lassen sich nicht mehr mit Zalando-Gutscheinen unter den Teppich kehren.
Lumia 630 kommt gut an

Ich interessiere mich ja immer besonders für die Highend-Lumias. 920, 925, 930, 1020, 1520. Die haben aber, zumindest wenn sie gerade auf den Markt gekommen sind, starke Konkurrenz von diversen erfolgreichen Androiden. Erst mit der Zeit werden sie zum Schnäppchen. 920 und 925 wurden erst so richtig interessant, als der Preis auf unter 300 € gefallen war.
Richtig erfolgreich sind vor allem die Einsteigergeräte wie das 520. Das war mir immer zu schwach und ich habe lieber das 620 empfohlen. Den Durchbruch aber schafft anscheinend das 630. Das gibt es bereits für unter 130 €, obwohl es noch ganz neu ist. Über 400 Bewertungen bei Amazon sprechen eine deutliche Sprache, überwiegend 5 Sterne und begeisterte Kunden. Letzte Woche soll das schwarze Gerät sogar die Verkaufsstatistik angeführt haben.
Ich bin ja etwas verwöhnt, was die Kamera und das Display angeht. Aber ganz ehrlich, mit einem 630 würde ich genau das gleiche machen wie mit dem 930.
Social Overengineering

"Das kann ja nur einen Twitter-Account" höre ich immer wieder mal über Twitter-Apps. Das kann mir recht egal sein, denn es gibt nur einen @vowe. Und der wird immer wieder mal verwirrt. Heute zum Beispiel vom hochgeschätzten Kollegen Thomas Kuhn und seinem Alter Ego.
@vowe GI ist Technikredakteurs-, TK ist Privatmeinung. Bin halt vielschichtig. Z.B. Wirst Du FW-Posts nie bei GI finden.

Ich habe das dann so verstanden, dass der obere Account mehr den beruflichen Aspekt abdeckt, der untere dagegen den privaten. Und dann gibt es natürlich Überschneidungen wie eben hier. Mir ist das zu kompliziert, also habe ich den oberen weiter abonniert und den unteren nicht mehr.
Thomas ist nicht der Einzige mit zwei Accounts. Der Kollege Thomas Cloer etwa tritt als @teezeh und als @computerwoche auf. Da kommt auch immer mal was durcheinander, weil der eine oder andere Tweet im falschen Kanal landet. Thomas ist mir wichtiger als Computerwoche, deshalb habe ich halt den abonniert.
Richtig gut funktioniert die Trennung bei Jürgen Kuri und heise online. Warum? Das eine ist ein Mensch, das andere ein Bot. Und das ist die einzige Trennung, die für mich funktioniert. Menschen mag ich nicht aufteilen.
Finally upgraded the 1020 to Lumia Cyan

If you live in iOS country, updates are easy. So are restores. iTunes just gets the image and installs it. In Windows Phone country, things aren't that easy. There are literally hundreds of country and carrier variants for each Windows Phone model. Apple does not do that. When carriers ask for variants, they get a big FU from Cupertino. But I digress.
My 1020 does not exist, so to say. It's an RM-875 059T2Z1. As such, I cannot download an image and restore it. It's not on Nokia's servers. Why is my device such a white elephant? It was created for an O2 event in London last year. It has 64 GB of memory and a special imprint on the back. And there may be only a hundred of them. That's nice, but it also has its challenges. Reflashing for instance.
Nokia Support was a bit static. They offered to pick it up here and return it re-flashed. But that does take a while, and since I always re-flash phones before they leave vowe's magic flying circus, I was stuck. Support also did not want to work with me here at my site, so I had to tap into a few other sources.
Anyway, the 1020 now believes it is a German Country Variant, or in Nokia terms, an RM-875 059T2J8. And as such, it automatically updated itself to the latest Windows Phone 8.1, Lumia Cyan. Restored everything from the cloud, and I am back in business. I am also going to push 2500 photos to the camera roll, and about a thousand songs to the media player.
Five tablets

From left to right:
- Surface RT. I love the original Surface RT. There is no Win32 legacy, just Metro apps, plus the oldschool Microsoft Office and the "desktop" which I never use. My favorite app is NextGen Reader. My favorite hardware feature is the stand that folds out on the back. The Surface is the only computer at vowe's magic flying circus that runs around the clock. And that is for one feature: when idle, it displays all my photos on OneDrive. And all smartphones at vowe's magic flying circus upload their photos automatically.
- Lumia 2520. Surface RT is a bit slow and does not have full HD resolution. That's where the 2520 comes in. Same great software, but a much better display. What is missing is a stand, and that is why it is not in the photo. I love to hold it in my hand though, because it is rounder and nicer to the touch. Where Surface feels hard, Lumia feels human. The screen is full HD and works great outdoor. It's my best outdoor screen in any large device. And it has LTE, like the (more expensive iPad Air.
- Yoga Tab 8. This is my favorite Android device. It's inexpensive, yet still well-built. It runs very long on a single charge, and by that I mean more than 12 hours. Its ingenious design lets you hold the device easily with one hand. And you can prop it up with its included stand. If you are on a tight budget, I recommend this machine.
- Yoga Tab 10 HD+. When the Yoga Tab came out last year, the 10 inch version got all the attention and I quickly decided that the 8" version was cheaper and generally better, since both had the same resolution. There was nothing to gain by adding more weight and two more inches. That was changed now with the HD+. It is the superior machine, both in terms of CPU power and screen resolution.
- iPad Air. If money is of no concern, get the iPad Air. None of the other machines has the breadth and quality of software. When I am speaking, the iPad runs my presentations. When I am traveling, it often serves as my typewriter. For watching videos, nothing beats the Lumia. For reading, the Lenovo Tab is nicer to hold. There is no photo frame software that matches the Surface RT. But if you can afford it, the iPad should be your choice.
The big 10" iPad before the Air would not have won this so easily. It was heavier than the rest and it felt bulky. It did have the same software advantage, but it somehow felt outdated.
These aren't the only machine that can be used as tablets. I think the 6" Lumia 1520 can make a tablet redundant. One great device instead of two. With a 5" BlackBerry Z30, or a Passport in the near future, you probably don't need one either. What the BlackBerry bring to the table is great HDMI output. You can just run your PPTs from the device. That feature is also in the Surface and Lumia 2520 products. Miracast might be an option, but I find more venues that support AirPlay to an Apple TV than Miracast. For most venues, it's still VGA.

Lumia and iPhone

To your left is Grin on Lumia, to your right Imgur on iPhone. The full 1632 px imagage is here. And that is already scaled down from the native Lumia HD resolution. While this comparison is roughly to scale of a 1520 vs iPhone screen, in reality you get even more pixels on the Lumia 930/1520 with a much crisper display. Plus, Grin is better designed than Imgur.
Maybe this explains a bit why I love the Lumias.

Teymur reviews the Nokia Lumia 1020

I asked Nokia to send Teymur a Lumia 1020 as a loaner. He has used it for a couple of weeks, and he is not convinced.
I have used the camera now for a few weeks and also on my two week work trip to Brazil and a few others. I have to admit, I really fell in love with the phone, but not neccessarily the camera.
Teymur is an excellent professional photographer. Find his work here. And as I learned this year, he is also a really nice person. Hire him!
Anyway, Teymur has found two issues: speed and rolling shutter. It does take a long time to process a photo on the Lumia 1020, for two reasons. First, 41 MP is a lot of data. Second, it does not have a graphic coprocessor. All its wizardry is done in software. It does not take six seconds on my Lumia 1020 to load the camera, but it does take three. That is indeed a long time. Also, frame-to-frame it takes a lot longer than most other cameras. The 930 and the 1520 are faster, but still do take longer than competing cameraphones.
What surprised me was the rolling shutter situation. Teymur shoots lots of photos on the move. Point the camera out of the window and shoot. As the camera processes its data row by row, you get slanted images. I have not noticed this issue since all of my photos are still photos. I am not moving when shooting a photo. Not at all. I believe the 1020 has both a mechanical and an electronic shutter, and I simply don't know when either one is used. This may lead to an interesting discussion.
How to stay reasonably safe in the connected world

There is a huge tidal wave of malware coming at you. It's going to target devices that are not reasonably secure and it's going to target gullible people. If you have grown up with a PC and your ability to install about anything that lands on your computer, from sources unknown, you are sitting right in the middle of the crosshairs. And Norton is not going to protect you.
Here are a couple of rules for people who know their stuff. I won't reach the completely clueless.
- Do not jailbreak your device. It removes an important layer of security. Yes, you will unfortunately have to pay for your software. If you root your Samsung phone, Knox is disabled, forever. And for a reason.
- Stay out of the mainstream. Attackers will always attack the dominant platform. There is more to gain, because there are more potential victims. And frankly, more stupid people.
- Choose devices that get regular updates. Choose vendors that publish change logs. Those are the ones that fix problems and tell you about it.
- Never install anything from "other" sources. The most stupid warez I have seen are cracked copies of "secure" apps like Threema. You have no idea what you are installing. And on some platforms you have no way to ever remove what you just installed. Even if the app disappears from your launcher.
Take a hint from this list. It shows supported platforms for a spyware. Try not to be this guy.
