Drucker gesucht

by Volker Weber

ZZ56519C50

Was kauft man da?

I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.

Two weeks with the Yoga Tab 2 Pro

by Volker Weber

ZZ2403CAE2

It's very hard to overstate the size of the Yoga Tab 2 Pro. In the photo above you see an iPad Air 2 leaning against it. If you place it in portrait mode, you need two of them to barely hide the Yoga. It's this huge.

Lenovo said that 80% of tablet use is in the house. That is why they designed this huge device. And if that screen is not big enough, it also contains a pico projector. Since I have had the tablet, I have shown it to quite a few people, and every single one of them wanted to have one.

I have also used the Lenovo while traveling. No idea, how many people took a photo of that weird dude with a huge tablet and huge headphones. But it's great fun hanging this screen from the seatback in front of you and being the only person outside of the cockpit with a decent screen. Instrumental in getting media into the device was the PK K'3 Smartphone USB Key.

iPad Air 2

by Volker Weber

ZZ4C4ACCD0

The new iPad Air 2 appears to be pretty similar to the original iPad Air, but when you look closely, you will notice lots of differences. The SIM card slot went from the left to the right side, the plastic insert on the LTE model is a bit wider. The whole device is a bit thinner and technically a bit lighter, but you will not be able to tell the difference. The new iPad is also supposed to be way faster, but it's completely unnoticeable to me. Going from an iPad to an iPad Air is a huge change, going from Air to Air 2 is not.

For me it boils down to two major changes. One positive, the other negative.

On the upside, the new iPad Air 2 has the fingerprint sensor that was introduced in the iPhone 5S and continued into the 6 and 6 plus models. Finally you could secure your device without typing in the passcode umpteen times a day.

On the downside I am missing the switch in the upper right hand corner that let me quickly lock the screen orientation. I have used it quite often and I wish Apple had not removed it from the device.

Galaxy Note 4 keeps growing on me

by Volker Weber

ZZ67E7C776

Yesterday I visited the Samsung Innovation Center in London. Great meetings covering a wide arrange of topics. It's a difficult topic. On one hand, Samsung can't really tell me what is coming, on the other hand they can speak about the development process. And I was really amazed by some of the people I met.

They had all kinds of gear to try out and that includes Gear. And I had to revisit my judgment on VR headsets. The headset they developed with Oculus is simply amazing. When you first put it on, you do see a lot of pixelation and that's happening with the 500+ dpi Note 4 as the display. I have no idea what kind of resolution you need to make those pixels disappear. Certainly four digits if not five. Anyway, after you wore the headset for a minute or so, your brain filters the image so you no longer notice the pixels. Head tracking was absolutely flawless. Now I can see myself wanting one.

ZZ2D1768F1

As I get a better feel of the company and try out more of their products the Galaxy Note keeps growing on me. I picked up a really nice cover that completely changed the quality perception for me. Yes, this is real stitching. When the Note is inside this folding cover, it becomes a nice booklet. The camera is not longer sticking out on the back, the decorations are taking a backseat, and the whole experience becomes way more classy. And there is an additional benefit: wireless Qi charging. Works with all my Nokia chargers!

I also have all the vital apps installed now. Here navigation, UP, Withings, Sonos. It's all set up. Now I am ready to learn. The Galaxy Note is a powerhouse of features on top of Android, and it's not obvious how all of this works.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has landed

by Volker Weber

Galaxy

Today the Galaxy Note 4, which I find to be the most interesting smartphone/tablet from Samsung, became available in stores in Germany. One of them has landed at vowe's magic flying circus. I just played with it for a couple of hours so it's way too early for any serious review. But I do have a few impressions.

Galaxy

Like all Samsung smartphones it feels rather cheap. Just when Apple moved to curved edges, Samsung introduces chamfered edges, much like the iPhone 5 did two years ago. And this time, it's metal and not plastic. The removable back blends right into the frame, but the front does not. Where the screen meets the frame, there is a notable gap and a ridge, so the front isn't smooth at all.

But Samsung is clearly moving in the right direction. Metal is metal, not on the S-Pen, but on the device frame. The faux leather back does away with the embarrassing stitching. And the USB port on the bottom of the device goes back to version two with its smaller plug. With Google installing my apps from backup, I am immediately comfortable with the Google Now launcher and Gmail and Chrome. Only the Samsung phone icon sticks out like a sore thumb.

I would love love love to have the pure Android user experience, with Knox added. The screen is just wonderful. And a nice touch, compared to BlackBerry, iOS, and Windows Phone: the Note shows me a German keyboard, with proper Umlauts. Without any tweaking on my part.

Galaxy

The Note 4 gets most of the S5 features, like the fingerprint reader and the heart rate monitor on the back. Lots of stuff to play with. The camera is also upgraded with OIS (optical image stabilization). And yes, I did not notice the protective plastic before looking at the photo. It's of course off by now. ;-)

Galaxy

And here is the weird part. Before you can insert a SIM which isn't from Europe, you have to place at least one 5 minute phone call with a European SIM. Excuse my French, but WTF?

New iPad LTE ship with an Apple SIM

by Volker Weber

ZZ3F17922C

The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.

That's for the UK and the US only. For now. The future just started. You may no longer need to swap SIMs when traveling. It all depends on whether carriers want Apple's business.

Happy 10th aniversary @Sonos, Sir

When I was in New York a few weeks ago, we nearly made it to our second date. ;-)

Sonos BOOST vs Sonos BRIDGE

by Volker Weber

ZZ0A911905

There is a new Sonos bridge available and it's called BOOST. It has exactly the same function as BRIDGE, but it has updated networking hardware and is supposed to give you 50% better coverage.

ZZ0D35E850

Q: Do I need BRIDGE/BOOST?
A: Only if (a) you cannot run an Ethernet wire from your router to any Sonos component in your home and (b) connecting via Wifi isn't good enough.

Q: When is Wifi not good enough?
A: For everything beyond simple music streaming. If you want to run PLAYBAR with SUB and two PLAY:1 or PLAY:3 for instance.

Q: I have BRIDGE. Do I want to upgrade to BOOST?
A: If everything is working OK, no. If you have dropouts due to bad wireless coverage, yes. Let Sonos support check.

Q: Does BOOST replace BRIDGE?
A: After Sonos sold their stock of BRIDGE, yes. For now they still have BRIDGE and you can buy two of them for one BOOST.

Yoga Tablet 2 Pro

by Volker Weber

ZZ7B25D602

The new Yoga Tablet 2 Pro is huge. 13.3" screen, QHD display (2 x 1280 by 2 x 720 = 2560 by 1440 pixels). The design follows the same principle as the original tablet, but it's better in a lot of ways. First, you can open the stand in any angle you want, all the way to 180 degrees. There is a hole in the middle of that stand so you can hang it on the wall. The sound is way better and it's now driven by an Intel Atom processor, which has three times the CPU performance and twice the graphic performance.

ZZ5E95AAC5

And it has one trick up its sleeve: a pico projector. The photo above shows how you place the tablet to get a level screen on the wall. I have watched a movie across from 4 meters distance. If the room is completely dark, this is quite an experience. The more light there is in the rooom, the closer you have to get. And eventually you are much better off to just watch on the IPS display. The projector will deplete the battery within less than four hours, so it's good for a movie, but not for lengthy meetings. With the projector turned off, you will get more than 10 hours of operation, Lenovo promises up to fifteen.

ZZ54D2BD2D

Lenovo adds lots of software to stock Android 4.4.2 which I am completely ignoring for now. I just installed the Google Now launcher and use the stock Chrome and Gmail apps. If you swipe up from the bottom you will see an extensive control panel. Lenovo has added multiuser support back which they stripped off the original Yoga Tablet.

ZZ01B4161B

I am at odds with the amount of memory available shown here. This is a 32 GB device and it is showing 20 GB reserved by the O/S. This is highly unlikely since the smaller tablets show 4 GB of reserved space for the O/S. After looking at the partition table, I am pretty sure that only 16 GB of the 32 have been allocated to partitions and that this panel simply lumps everything not /data together as O/S. I tried resetting and also went into recovery mode where I failed to reformat the internal SD.

My problem is that Lenovo is too many layers deep to get to a person who can fix this. For now I am using it as if it only had 16 GB of storage. Who wants to send me a 64 GB MicroSD? ;-)

Screen Sharing for Lumia Phones

by Volker Weber

ZZ011DDCEB.jpg

Screen Sharing for Lumia Phones is a little gadget you probably want if you have a Lumia and want to project content to your big TV screen. It's a Miracast receiver with just two connectors: MicroUSB for power and full size HDMI-out. You can use any Miracast-certified source to project to this device. Its basic function works exactly like my Netgear PTV-3000.

There is one more thing though. The device has an NFC tag embedded into a coaster that you can take off and place it on your coffee table. When you touch it with your Lumia phone, it automatically pairs with the device and starts projecting.

My initial test wasn't as successful as with the Netgear receiver. I have placed both behind the Samsung TV in exactly the same place and while the Netgear was working as expected, the Microsoft device had a hard time keeping the connection. Apparently reception coming from below was too weak. Another problem might be that I was powering it through a USB port from the back of the TV instead of through the supplied power adapter. Works for the Netgear, may not be working for the Microsoft device.

Update: It was not the power supply. Wifi reception is too weak. Does not work behind the TV, also does not work inside cabinet. The phone needs to "see" the device.

DNUG: Fortbestand über 2014 hinaus?

by Volker Weber

Roswitha Boldt fragt:

by Volker Weber

ZZ6E9D955A

It is very hard to overstate how much I enjoy the iPhone 6 Plus. Ever since I used the Lumia 1520 I was ready for large smartphones. It's very much a personal preference. Just as your choice of platform. I understand people who enjoy their Galaxy Note just as well. And I am delighted that she is loving her BlackBerry Passport.

As somebody who tries to use all platforms at the same time, I am incredibly attached to the iPhone 6 Plus. While I am always aware of apps that are available on Windows Phone or BlackBerry, and sometimes wary of apps that won't install on this particular Android, I am completely relaxed with the iPhone. I know it will run if I need it.

If I had to give up all other mobile devices, I would keep the 6 Plus.

LTE Bänder

by Volker Weber

3 1800 MHz
7 2600 MHz
20 800 MHz

AT&T 4/17
Verizon 13
Sprint 25
T-Mobile 2/4

iPhone 5S
A1457 1/2/3/5/7/8/20
A1453 1/2/3/4/5/8/13/17/18/19/20/25/26
A1518 1/2/3/5/7/8/20/38/29/40
A1530 1/2/3/5/7/8/20/38/29/40
A1533 1/2/3/4/5/8/13/17/19/20/25

iPhone 5c
A1456 1/2/3/4/5/8/13/17/18/19/20/25/26
A1507 1/2/3/5/7/8/20
A1516 1/2/3/5/7/8/20/38/29/40
A1529 1/2/3/5/7/8/20/38/29/40
A1532 1/2/3/4/5/8/13/17/19/20/25

iPhone 6/6+
A1549/A1522 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/13/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29
A1586/A1524 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/13/17/18/19/20/25/26/28/29/38/39/40/41

Flipboard for Windows Phone is here

by Volker Weber

ZZ1CFC2B18 ZZ17402B81

Announced October 2013, delivered October 2014. This has been a long pregnancy. Flipboard only runs on Lumias with 1 GB RAM, so 5x0, 6xx and 720 are out of luck. Statement:

The Microsoft and Flipboard teams will continue to work together in the months ahead to develop a road map for optimizing Flipboard for lower memory Windows Phones

Unfortunately it also does not flip. It's more like a Scrollboard.

8-Zylinder, 4-Zylinder, 2-Zylinder. Dafür Rallye-Streifen. ;-)

Also, ziemlich viel richtig gemacht.

A few thoughts on Windows 10

by Volker Weber

Before I start let me say that I will generalize. It's pretty easy to find examples where I am wrong.

If you watched yesterday's presentation, and I would recommend you do if you didn't, you will find that Microsoft addressed businesses. And I believe they are doing the right thing. My thoughts, in no particular order:

Why do I think, Microsoft is doing the right thing? Windows 8 is better than Windows 7. The new homescreen is a distraction from that. It runs better, faster, more secure than Windows 7. Going back or staying on Windows 7 makes no sense. Microsoft has to make Windows 10 familiar. People need to know where their stuff is. Start menu, search field, task bar, Windows controls, it's all there. This solved the first four items.

How do you solve the other four? I don't know. Microsoft addresses the last one by going to one brand, and one store. The store will give you what runs on your device. Developers can figure it out, users shouldn't need to. How do you get those iPad users back? Maybe with bigger devices. Phones are getting larger, tablets will be getting larger as well or become obsolete. Convertibles like Yoga or Surface might have a chance. So far that hasn't happened though.

Will Windows ever be cool again?
