New Twitter owner Elon Mask is clearly out of his depth running Twitter, a network of over 200 million active users. “Twitter is going great” is keeping track of the drama. If you heard a similar title first, that was “Web3 is going great” by the wonderful Molly White who follows the crypto scams. The Twitter site is also built with her Static Timeline Generator.
Seit Ende Oktober laufen Meetings bis in die dunklen Abendstunden. Da war es an der Zeit, mal etwas besseres Licht für die Kamera aufzubauen. Idealerweise sieht das wie im Fotostudio aus, mit großen Softboxen und ganz viel Licht. Es geht aber auch schlanker, etwa mit dem Logitech Litra Beam, der an eine moderne Schreibtischleuchte erinnert.
Wichtig ist, dass das keine punktförmige Lichtquelle ist, sondern ein lange Lichtleiste. Das vermeidet harte Schatten im Gesicht. Die Lampe hat drei Stativgewinde, eins am Ende und zwei in der Mitte unten und hinten. Damit lassen sich sehr unterschiedliche Aufstellungen arrangieren. Lampe, Stativ und USB-Kabel sind mitgeliefert, die Kabelführung ist vorbildlich.
Ich habe das USB-Kabel einfach in mein Surface Dock gesteckt. Vor dort wird die Leuchte mit Strom versorgt und kommuniziert mit dem Surface Pro. Alternativ kann man auch ein normales Netzteil verwenden und den PC via Bluetooth verbinden.
Was mir nicht so gut gefällt: Der Litra Beam wird nur durch Logitech G-Hub unterstützt, nicht aber mit LogiTune (für Headsets) oder Logi Options+ für Keyboard und Maus). Das wäre dann das dritte Stück Software von Logitech, das ich benötige. G-Hub bot sofort ein Firmware Update an, ansonsten muss man es nicht unbedingt verwenden. Die Leuchte hat einen Druckschalter zum Ein-und Ausschalten sowie zwei Doppelschalter für Helligkeit und Farbe. Hat man das einmal korrekt konfiguriert, reicht einfaches Ein- und Ausschalten. Und diese Funktion würde ich gerne über Options+ auf einen Hotkey legen.
Ich finde Litra Beam ausgesprochen formschön. Sie spricht mich mehr an als die verbreiteten Elgato Key Lights.
Als die ersten (Apple-)Laptops auftauchten, die nur noch USB-C Anschlüsse hatten, habe ich mir ein paar Adapter besorgt, mit denen ich alte USB-A Geräte. etwas Speichersticks in die neuen Geräte stecken kann. Mittlerweile habe ich das umgekehrte Problem. Neuere Geräte kommen häufig mit USB-C Kabeln, manche sogar fest verbunden. Meine Hubs oder meine Bildschirme haben jedoch mehr USB-A als USB-C Anschlüsse. Also brauche ich nur das Gegenteil: USB-C Buchse auf USB-A Stecker. Zum Glück sind die nicht teuer, aber man muss sie haben.
Wenn Apple dann gezwungen wird, nach mehr als 10 Jahren Lightning aufzugeben, dann geht der Zirkus noch mal los.

Ich habe recht lange auf ein Testgerät der Brio 505 von Logitech gewartet. Seit letzter Woche habe ich sie nun im Einsatz. Brio 505 ist eine Webcam mit 1080p Auflösung, also 1920×1080 Bildpunkten. Das entspricht dem, was die Webcams in den neuesten Laptops können und kein Vergleich zu den 720p-Webcams, die bis 2021 gang und gäbe waren.
Ich mag das pfiffige Logi-Design. Die Bildschirmhalterung ist magnetisch, das passende Gegenstück ist ein Metallschraube im Stativgewinde an der Unterseite der Kamera. Da sich die Halterung am Monitor festkleben lässt, kann man die Webcam jederzeit schnell greifen, wenn man etwas zeigen will.
Der innere Teil der Halterung ist kippbar. Und mit einem Lagesensor erkennt die Kamera, ob sie gerade nach vorne oder nach unten schaut. Wenn man den sogenannten Show Mode aktiviert, dann wird das Kamerabild um 180 Grad gekippt.
Da die Brio 505 einen Autofokus mit Gesichtserkennung hat, stellt sie sowohl im Normalmodus als auch bei gedrehtem Modus stets das Bild scharf. Wenn man etwas zeigen will, kann man es kurz in die Kamera halten. Den Show Mode finde ich besonders nützlich, weil man das Gefühl hat, über die Schulter zu schauen. Ich habe so etwa das korrekte Setup dieses Mischpultes demonstriert.
Die Brio 505 hat kein Windows Hello, eine Anmeldung durch Gesichtserkennung ist deshalb nicht möglich. Sie hat einen griffigen Ring am rechten Ende, mit dem man die Kamera schließen kann, wenn man sie nicht nutzt. Eine LED warnt, wenn die Kamera aktiv ist und sie hat zwei Mikrofone, die nützlich beim Einsatz mit einem Desktop PC sind.
Das Bild der Brio 505 ist nicht ganz so hell und knackscharf wie das der 4k auflösenden Brio, aber für die kleinen Bildchen in Teams, Zoom & Co ist es ausreichend. Je nach Abstand zur Kamera kann man zwischen 90, 78 und 65 Grad Blickwinkel umschalten. Man muss dazu die Software LogiTune installieren. Die Kamera behält ihre Einstellungen, wenn man sie vom Strom trennt. So lässt sie sich auch am Privat-PC konfigurieren, falls man in einer restriktiven IT-Landschaft arbeitet.
Ich habe mir die Brio 505 angeschaut. Das ist Business-Version der Brio 500. Sie lässt sich zentral verwalten und aktualisieren und ist damit die bessere Wahl im Unternehmenseinsatz. Wer sie privat anschaffen will, kann auch einfach zur Brio 500 greifen.

Musk is sinking the Twitter ship much faster than I expected. Lots of people like Mastodon as an alternative, and I don’t believe it’s quite there yet. But it’s a safe way to interact with decent people with a much nicer experience than on Twitter. I will explain how they get rid of the toxic discussions later.
I am not going to use Mastodon terminology but words you understand, like “server” instead of “instance”. I am also not going to explain the Fediverse. But you must know a major difference:
My name on Mastodon is not @vowe as it is on Twitter but rather @vowe@chaos.social – yes, like email addresses with an @ in front of it. It is a federated infrastructure of thousands of servers.
People have started to add their Mastodon names on their Twitter profile, as either @vowe@chaos.social or https://chaos.social/@vowe – you can click this now.
There is a tool that lets you scan all your followers and lists on Twitter. We will use this to find the best server for you. https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ You need to authorize it to read your Twitter data. It’s open source. Check if you don’t trust.
If found 293 friends out of 6843 accounts. It shows them organized by server and it will let you know if the server has open registrations. You download the list as .csv and keep it for later.
Now you pick a server. I recommend a local one where you live (for local content) or a server with likeminded people. Go to that server and register. Take a note of your new profile address and add it to your Twitter profile so that others can find you.
Log into the server and check the browser UI. You can enable an expert mode that shows you multiple columns.
Remember the .csv file from the last step. Go to Settings and upload the file. Boom. You just requested to follow all people you followed on Twitter that have made their address available.
Mastodon is not exactly like Twitter but you can just start using it like it was. Once you get your feet wet, you can look at two other feeds, next to your Home feed which contains all your follows. “Local timeline” shows you everything going on on your server, and “Federated timeline” shows you everything available to you.
Keep your Twitter account. You can still find your old follows once they add their Mastodon names. You also want to leave your Mastodon name on your Twitter profile so that they can find you.
You can report bad people and your local admin might ban them. And you can report bad servers (racism, conspiracy, Covid deniers, holocaust deniers etc.) and your server might stop federating with them. Here is a list of the servers my server blocks.

As some have noted, Google Hangouts was replaced by both Google Chat and Google Duo. To be clear: Google Chat launched as Hangouts Chat for Google Workspace (formerly G Suite). Google Duo replaced Hangouts in the suite of Google apps for Android (not to be confused with G Suite)
