New toy coming up: Nokia E75

No firm delivery date set yet, but "not before easter" is starting now. :-) This is the fist device with the new Nokia Messaging client preloaded. Large keyboard but small screen when compared to the E90. It's going to replace my N82 which replaced the E71.

I don't get this dual keyboard thing. Why didn't they just used a large touchscreen on the top.

People who need to type like keys.

@Christian - the Nokia N97 has the form factor you're looking for.

I'm a little confused about the "Nokia Messaging Client." I just installed on my E71 and connected it to gmail, but contrary to my expectation it does not replace the "normal" email client. The problem is that I use Lotus Traveler, and would like to access Notes mail through the nicer interface of the new messaging client, but it isn't clear how. Equally unclear is whether the new client is only useful for accessing accounts that you set up through the website (and eventually pay for), or it can be used as a typical standalone client.

Anyone know the deal?

Nokia Messaging is like Quickr. Two things with the same name. What you are seeing with GMail on S60 is the former Intellisync product. There is also another part which came from the OZ Communications acquisition.

As far as I know Nokia does work with Traveler, but probably not immediately through Nokia Messaging. The endgame for Nokia is that everything goes through Nokia Messaging, Gmail, Exchange, Domino, etc. EAS support in Domino should help here.

Don't expect to pay Nokia for messaging. They try to sell it to carriers.

Thanks Volker. So in the interim (i.e. before Nokia takes over the Traveler role) it seems I can't surface my Notes mail inside the new client :-(. I guess the topology then would be more Blackberry-like, with Traveler serving as the "BES", routing through Nokia instead of RIM. What if I don't want to route my corporate email through Nokia?

Damn! That's the thing i was waiting for. My E71 is really nice, but this would have been so much smarter. but the first keyboard looks like it is similar to the one on the N78, which is ..ah never mind.
btw. the best Keyboard on a mobile phone i ever had, was the keyboard on the MDA Pro, but mobile wasn't quite the right word for it.

Do you think they have added the following 2 features:

- Cut and Paste (ie a Clipboard) ?
- Phone number recognizer and click 2 call in the Web Browser ?

Is it just me, or does it seem weird that a so called Smart phone can't do this ?

Joel Demay, 2009-04-16

@Joel: What? You mean there are (smart) phones out there, that don't support cut and paste? And have been doing so for years? Quick - somebody tell the iPhone trolls!

It will be interesting to find out how the horizontal mode feels in use: the lack of soft and arrow keys on the quertz keyboard suggests that the right thumb will have to travel from the secondary to the primary keyboard all the time for navigational tasks. This should not be a problem given the device's size, but could feel awkward and unintuitive nonetheless.

Very good observation, Haiko. Will let you know of my findings.

I played with an E75 in Barcelona for about 15 minutes, and I did not prefer it to the E71. Will see how I like it with extended use.
