WakkaWiki

by Volker Weber

Wakka is a server-side application written in PHP that allows you to build and maintain collaborative websites. At its core, it's what people call a Wiki engine -- an application that poweres a website with features similar to the original Wiki site. Wakka can also be used as a high-level site building framework, if you're willing to learn about WakkaPlugins.

Wakka is not a content management system. While CMS-like applications can be built upon Wakka as a base, Wakka's real strength is simplicity.

WakkaWikki is written by Hendrik Mans, Wiesbaden, Germany and currently is a 23k download. It is free to use and you can host it on any ISP that supports PHP and MySQL. As I found out on Hendrik's weblog you can also spend hundreds of Euros a year to have somebody else do something very similar for you. If you don't like free stuff, that is.

Systems Architecture

This site runs on an Apache web server on top of the Linux operating system. The content is managed with MovableType which is implemented in Perl. Last but not least the HTML code your browser sees is put together with PHP.
