After setting up all the required filters I was able to sync Clyde with the server once. My Bluetooth connection to my WAN is very stable now so there was no real problem here.

When I looked at Notes there was the all-to-familiar mess. Although I had told Pylon to write to the server, it did not overwrite what was there, but instead duped all addresses and to-dos. The calendar was somewhat better since it only duped the recurring items.
When I wanted to sync this mess back into the device so that I could kill the double entries off with Undupe, it failed:

OK, enough for today. I won't have time to check these things out until monday, so I will rest my case here for now. I am a bit underwhelmed. Somehow I expected this to work better ...

Das mit den doppelten Einträgen rührt daher, daß es in der Konfigurationsdatenbank nur die Option "Handheld writes to Desktop" nicht aber die Option "Handheld overwrites the Desktop (Notes)" gibt. Im Gegensatz dazu gibt es umgekehrt nur die Option "Desktop overwrites Handheld".
Es wird also von 2 Annahmen ausgegangen, die sich beide an einem Firmenumfeld orientieren:
- Notes ist schon da und der Handheld kommt später dazu, ist also leer
- Notes ist im Zweifelsfall das führende System
Technisch gesehen rühren die Probleme mit doppelten Einträgen (mit denen alle Anbieter zu kämpfen haben) ursächlich daher, daß es halt kein Notes auf dem Palm ist und daher keine Replikation ist sondern nur eine Syncronisation. Da aber Notes 5 Terminarten kennt der Palm aber nur 2. Dies führt dazu das alle Produkte eine Umsetzung von den Dokumenten des Notes Systems auf den Palm vornehmen müßen. Wird diese Beziehung später "gebrochen" z.B. durch löschen des ersten Termins eines in Notes angelegten Wiederholungstermins haben Sie die häufigste Ursache für das entstehen von doppelten Einträgen.
Daraus ergibt sich die Empfehlung an unsere Kunden bei Neuinstallationen und Updates zunächst eine Synchronisation "Notes overwrites Palm" durchzuführen (damit einmal eine saubere Beziehungaufgebaut wird) und dann auf Synchronisation umzustellen.
Desweiteren empfehlen wir den IT-Betreuern in den Firmen Ihren Endusern eine realistische Erwartungshaltung klarzumachen indem man erklärt das es numal kein Notes ist und daher nicht ALLES kann.
Dies vorausgeschickt empfehlen wir den Usern sich zu überlegen welche "Seite" Sie am häufigsten benutzen den Desktop oder den PDA und dann möglichst nur auf dieser Seite Dokumente anzulegen bzw. zu verändern.
Ich hatte noch niemals Probleme mit doppelten Einträge. Ich folge dabei zwei Regeln:
Ich synchronisiere immer am gleichen Arbeisplatz.
Ich synchronisiere immer nur in der Island Location nach der Replikation.
Dies kann ich auch hier nicht bestätigen. Funkt alles wie geschmiert.
