iSight, you sigh

Shortly after 8:00 the delivery man rang the door bell, and there it was: A new iSight camera. And it's Christmas all over again. Apple's packaging is simply unbelievable. It's almost a sacred act to unpack this thing.

I was only briefly able to test the device but what I can say for now is: Ladies and Gentlemen, get out your check books or credit cards. :-)

So let's have another test tonight :-)

Thomas noticed, that this is a mirror image. Of course it is, because it is the iChat monitor, where I can see myself. That works best, if you see it like a mirror and not like a regular camera image. It is actually the default in iChat and gives you an idea of the level of detail, that Apple puts in the software requirements.

Will the iSight camera and software work behind firewalls/NAT routers? That was one of the things I couldn't get to work in the MS world, and if the answer is yes, it might be an excellent excuse to get two of those things, one for the Mac at home and one for the Mac notebook that I would just, sadly, have to buy then as well ;-)

Yes, it will behind a NAT router. Behind a firewall you need to make sure that the required ports are open.

Bah, my Mac's so old I don't have Firewire... ;-)

If you have a USB webcam, you may test it with me. You need to installs some additional software.

But if I got one of those, I'd have to clean up my office!

So you think this is my office, eh? Nah. Only a fake background screen. :-)

In order to build a reading machine using iSight/iChat I need to undo the mirroring. Is this possible?

I totally dig the packaginf as well. Its almost better than the camera! ^_^

But about the mirror image, is that what is displayed to the other viewer as well? or is it just a mirror image for the user? I'd be impressed even more if iChat was converting it for the other users. Its great that is mirrored, because we're all used to it, but what if you're showing someone artwork or something?
