Magic numbers
by Volker Weber
Lotusphere starts next Monday, and I know I'm biased, but I think this is shaping up to be one of the best shows ever. We're expecting almost 5,000 people to join us in Orlando, which is over 15% more attendees than last year.
That's funny. Because two years ago, there were 5000 people at Lotusphere, and last year there were 500 more than two years ago, and now there will be over 15% more than last year.
Let's assume, there will be 5000 now, divide that by 1.15 and you get 4348 in 2005, minus 500 would be 3848 in 2004. Somebody must have done some serious window dressing.

Surjit missed two key words -- "paid attendees". Last year was 5000 including the Lotus/IBM staff, vendors, etc.
2006 paid registration is most definitely up year-to-year.
Ok, so there were 5000 last year, including Lotus/IBM and vendors and etc. And there will be 5000 this year, excluding IBM and vendors and etc. Up 15% would mean that there were around 650 IBM and vendors and etc last year, leaving paid attendees at 4350. I am pretty sure, I can dig up the transcript of last years opening session where Ambuj said that attendance was up by 500. Assuming that he did not mean 500 more Lotus/IBM, vendors and etc, because then the 2004 show would have been run with a mere 150 Lotus/IBM, vendors and etc, it still looks a lot like window dressing to me.
Hmmh, no, if 2004 had 5000 attendees, and it was up by 500 in 2005, and up by 15% this year with 5000 paid attendees, then 2005 must have been 5500-4350 = 1150 Lotus/IBM, vendors and etc. That is a pretty impressive number.
I think I know what it is, you just need to adjust for constant currency and seasonal adjustments, ie in constant currency and taking into account seasonal adjustments there will be more people at Lotusphere this year than last..
There's 15% more of me there this year than last?
Who counts attendees? it's like counting licensed seats, it's not really real :-)
I can say we have used the full compliment of badges this year for staff on our booth and had to purchase an additional badge, unlike last year where we used 2.
Maybe the numbers are adjusted to compensate for inflation !!! ;-)
