Alle mal abstimmen

by Volker Weber

Hah! Meine Startseite in Notes ist die Replikatorseite. Was mache ich jetzt?

Stefan Tilkov, 2006-02-08

Did it ;-)

Joerg Hochwald, 2006-02-08

a) Zeit hätte

Stefan Funke, 2006-02-08

Und was ist mit Display Bookmarks as Workspace ;-)

Alexander Kluge, 2006-02-08

Alexander, die sind der totale Schrott.

Volker Weber, 2006-02-08

To keep things in perspective:

The survey is (grossly) flawed/skewed, because of the following reason:

Most folks voting in this survey are most likely folks who used Notes for a long time (read: before the bookmarks got introduced in R5), such as Business Partners and application developers or administrators AND following the Domino blogosphere. These folks are so used to the workspace and will probably never (want to) make the cut over to using bookmarks (myself included*).

If all business/corporate users using Notes would vote, the survey results would likey be in favor of the bookmarks, because:

- most official training curriculum doesn't even mention the workspace anymore, so new users don't even know about it.
- most corporate deployments are 'locked down' via company-specific portal/welcome pages and only a handful of bookmarks to corporate applications are pushed out via policies.

* I use both: The desktop as the primary UI, and bookmarks for specific collections of bookmarked documents (not databases, those go to the desktop).

Thomas Gumz, 2006-02-08

Volker Weber, 2006-02-08

I think there are several layers that are mingled up:

Layer 1:
The internal working of DesktopX.dsk -> no documented API, no Policies, Blur dependencies between icons, replicator and location.
No question about that: it has to go

Layer 2:
having pages, icons (big fat square ones) or bookmarks is a a question of beautiy and that is in the eye of the beholder. So if you are happy with a bookmark like UI --> if it makes you happy it can't be that bad.

Layer 3:
Functionality: Stacking bookmarks (could I have a tab per server or a filter to show icons only from selected servers?) seems to be essential, so bookmarks need to improve there. Also Right click menu, access to compact (Should be in actions or tools?).

So the good folk in IBM's usability lab should get busy (from my experience in Orlando: they are real good). The developers should address the API stuff and everybody would be a happy camper.

Hilft.

Thomas, you are right. I have a desktop of 160 MB with about 1000 DBs which i do not want to migrate to anything but as you said, companies only supply a handful of bookmarks to their users. We will need both, bookmarks and workspace...

BTW - i start running out of space for my domain bookmarks in admin client !!!

Hubertus Amann, 2006-02-08

I am also using mostly the workspace (as most of the users using Notes for a long time). But I am also using bookmarks especially for bookmarking documents within databases (as Thomas does it).

But: I also do not know any company which is really using bookmarks instead of the desktop...

Michael Urspringer, 2006-02-08

Volker, warum ist "Display Bookmarks as Workspace" totaler Schrott?

Oliver Regelmann, 2006-02-08

My personal observation (based on german mid-size companies):

Companies with endusers working with welcome page/bookmarks get/got stuck with the basic functionality of Lotus Notes (mail, calender) and sometimes at some point in time come up with the idea to replace Lotus Notes with another e-mail system.

In companies which have realized the potential of Lotus Notes and are exploiting it, I seem to see more often the workspace to be used. And of course not very much talk of going away from Notes....

Michael Poetzsche, 2006-02-09

The bookmarks does have one nifty feature I find myself using quite a lot even though I've always been a workspace fan: the history section. Very usefull if e.g. you by accident closed a document you had opened through a link or bookmark. Or to get back to yesterday's work.

Other than that they're pretty useless (not to mention half the time they don't work - try using that 'show server names' option).

Jef Reynders, 2006-02-09

Volker Weber, 2006-02-09

We have been talking about the "big battle" workspace versus bookmarks to show the importance of the workspace (Admin, Dev & Users) and to get a chance to manage this workspace remotley within in the Notes Desktop (beyond the part/full solutions from the business partner community like aedificomm's workplace control).

The poll did show us a bit of the importance, so shouldn't we look for an evolution of this old famous workspace like
* a workspace/tab hierarchy to get more apps organized
* different app sizes (small middle big)
* tab colour (not only the label)

and more

Thanks Volker for your initiative at this obwious "unimportant" point.
