So much for 'early next week'

Excellent! Downloading now - can't wait to get this on our test i5. Great of them to get it ready for the weekend :-)

Great news! Managed to get the eclipse client downloaded pretty fast but it has slowed down a lot for the remainder of the files. :(

Does anyone know how to do a side by side install with an existing version of Lotus Notes? The installer only offers to upgrade my Notes 7.

Kieren Johnson, 2007-03-10 13:16

For a side by side installation you need to copy a few files around:
Asuming that your current install is in c:\Notes and C:\Notes\data...

Copy all of c:\Notes to c:\Notes7 (except the data directory). Install Notes8. It will overwrite your c:\notes. You can then start either Notes7 or Notes8. Caveat: Don't compact databases otherwise you end up with ODS48 which Notes7 can't read.
Of course you can copy the data directory too and edit the c:\notes7\notes.ini to keep all separate.
And of course: this is not officially supported by IBM.

No Mac clients this cycle. Should be expected at this point, I guess.

Will have to wait til Monday to check this stuff out.

Scott, AFAIK the Mac client won't arrive until Notes 8.0.1 which means at least six months later.

Vowe - what download extension do you use for FF??

skip brandon, 2007-03-10 17:29

@Skip,

Bruce here - I posted the screen shot of the FireFox download dialog and I am simply using the out-of-the-box version on my Parallels VM.

HTH,

Bruce

for instructions in german how to run multiple clients on the same machine see here:

Having real problems actually getting this downloaded.

Actually looks at the moment (21:30 GMT) that the site is down.

Garry Lees, 2007-03-10 22:28

The site is up for me, but it seems the files are no longer accessible...

Could this be the first time a site has ever been "vowe'd" ?? :o)

Kieren Johnson, 2007-03-11 09:43

Brought it up. Had trouble accessing Calendar (cannot find sitemap). Resolved by accessing an R7 calendar. Crashed repeatably after 5 mins with no use. Assume related to scheduled replication. Reverted to R7 client with R8 mail and pernames templates left as is. Like them much better that R7 templates. Will try again later, with a fresh install, rather than installing over R7.

@Nick, I hope you'll try a clean install. I did so for the first time in a long time when I started running beta 1...in fact I even restarted my personal address book (copy/paste the people and connections docs from the old one). I haven't had a crash in running either configuration of 8 since updating to a February 15 build. I haven't installed the official public beta yet, but I am pretty sure the repeated crashes you saw were atypical.

Let me know if I can help.

Same experience here. Running a clean install works pretty well.

For users of Ubuntu Edgy and Feisty: There's a bug in Ubuntu's libcairo version, which stops Notes from beeing drawn correctly. Here's the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcairo/+bug/91492

Nick - I had a few issues installing over the top of my ND7 install. For some reason on my copy of Vista (Yes, I know. Keep the sniggering down at the back), I had to run it in Adminstrator mode.

Also, copying the notes.ini back into the program directory helped.

I also found that I had to clear out a whole raft of "nlnotes.exe" and "notesw.exe"''s from memory when it crashed or I killed it from task manager.

Another install over the top, and its been rock solid.

OK. So on a clean install, it crashed the first time I invoked it, and since then has stayed up. Strangely, there is no way for public beta users to report bugs. Follow the link in "Starting Up", and you need to provide an access code to advance. sigh!
