... almost a Déjà Vu

Stephan Bohr, 2007-12-21 00:05

this is torture...

Lukas Praml, 2007-12-21 07:36

I am still wondering why I would need something like this in my 3 room apartment...

Ok, let me rephrase that... I'm still looking for a justification to convince myself that it's not only the tech-loving kid in me that wants one.

Ragnar, you live in 3 rooms, these guys live on 3 levels (and need to pay for 3 levels).

Oh heck, I've just realised how many boxes will be arriving on my doorstep on Monday :-0

Stuart McIntyre, 2007-12-21 09:28

Where are mine?

But would it make sense in a 1 room appartment? :)

Sebastian Grötsch, 2007-12-21 10:11

Not that many, no. :-)

Is vowe being THAT good a mother this xmas? Giving sonoses to everyone?

Ole Saalmann, 2007-12-21 10:26

No, that would be asking a little bit too much, wouldn't it? Just making sure they spend money wisely. :-)

See, Volker, that's my dilemma. I would want this, but rationally it just doesn't make that much sense... But still I would want... oh well!

Cognitive dissonance. Classic.

Ragnar - I was living in a small flat when I originally purchased Sonos, it was ideal.

3 sets of speakers at a normal volume are far more neighbour friendly than 1 set of loud speakers.

Ben Rose, 2007-12-21 10:48

One set of big speakers is better than a dozen small ones. Unless you only listen to elevator music.

Yes, but a set of big speakers playing at a casual listening volume in each room is bliss.

Ben Rose, 2007-12-21 11:42

Ragnar, we should both start with the Anonymous Sonos Abstinents.

Oh heck, I've just realised how many boxes will be arriving on the doorstep on Monday :-0

This Sonos stuff is so disappointing - from a IT persons perspective: Setting up three zones took no more than an hour. And it just worked.

Luckily I had some problems in the beginning: the software update for the players didn't work. Unfortunately, the whole setup self-updated 2 hours later without any further tinkering from my side.

What can I say: Wife and kids love it. Me too. And if I hadn't experienced the glitch in the beginning, I would have had my doubts. At least I now know, that inside the Sonos boxes, there is technology. Otherwise I would have guessed on magic...

Sorry for the duplicate comment - the perils of reading blogs on my blackberry...

@Jens-Christian - fascinating take - if you don't have issues, it can't be cool technology... You must be a Windows users ;-)

@Stuart: I'm a dyed in the wool mac fanboy. And the Sonos stuff is even easier than the Mac. I'm beginning to chant the praises of completely closed systems :)

just came home and found this here ;-) The party gets started in berlin tonight...

Idea for next week's poll:

- I have a Sonos
- I don't

Ole Saalmann, 2007-12-21 18:16

Seems there is some sort of Sonos virus around. Not ready to buy them yet but probably in the near future. Where did you all order? Sonos DE/UK or even US?

@vowe Did you hear about a new touchscreen controller coming? Tried the existing one and wasn't really convinced of usind the scroll wheel on the virtual keypad.

Sascha Langfus, 2007-12-21 19:31

Sascha, I am not aware of any new hardware coming out of Sonos. Otherwise I would have issued Alex warning.

I think I am infected with the Sonos virus, as well. Having successfully persuaded myself that the purchase of a new laptop would be complete nonsense as long as the old one is still up to the task (still, those shiny new dual core processors lure me...must resist) there would now be a budget for another toy to satisfy the lust for technology.

I have one question, though: I understand there is a dedicated Desktop Controller software in addition to the hardware controller. Since I have a Nokia N800 internet tablet which could well serve as a second controller device it would be very convenient if it was possible to use a regular web browser to access the playlists. Is there a web administration interface on the Sonos?

Happy holidays!

Volker Goeke, 2007-12-23 12:15

Yes, and no. It does not come out of the box with one, but you can run a server somewhere else. Sonos controllers and players talk via straight UPnP commands.

This is a 3rd party server which controls Sonos. I believe you can run the server on your N800.

Thank you for the link. Looks as if I do not have any more excuses not to buy the Sonos.
