Or maybe there was an engineer in the marketing team, sick of all the lying reality-tweaking, and he tries to calm his conscious by sending a covert message to customers. Then, of course, riding on this transportation can not be recommended.

I think Bill is correct here, obviously the spec said that the numbers always had to remain instantly recognizable. The gear was set up in such a way that the design goals could be met. Isn't that the goal of all good engineering?
