I am curious what you think about 8.0.2 response times. There has been a lot of talk about the speed of 8.0.2 and indeed startup time has improved.
My desktop computer is very capable of running Windows Vista (my Laptop is not) but not 8.0.2 Standard.
Maybe it is the way I work but I can't stand delayed response times in the UI.
I do not face this using pure Eclipse or Aptana Studio so maybe the extra layer that is used to face the old notes components (the classic interface) is what still makes it unusable for me (but maybe not for others).
And switching unread marks from bold/black to normal/red is even worse now because the notes.css is hidden in a jar file ( \IBM\Lotus\Notes8\framework\shared\eclipse\plugins\com.ibm.notes.branding_8.0.2.20080809-0430.jar then in the themes folder).
I still believe that rich clients make sense for a lot of applications but for Lotus Notes the web part looks much more compelling to me (maybe this is the good part of Notes 8). Unfortunately most of the UI elements are not available as components in Domino Designer.
With a fresh install on my Windows XP partition performance is better and UI response times improve when the client is able to cache design elements.
Done some quick tests for start-up time.
Test Machine: 3.0 GHz, Windows XP
Cold start-up (machine was rebooted for every single test):
8.0.1 (512 MB): 45 sec
8.0.2 (512 MB): 31 sec (~30 % improvement)
8.0.2 (1 GB): 25 sec
Warm start-up (between the starts it was ensured that no Notes task was running anymore):
8.0.1 (512 MB): N/A (sorry)
8.0.2 (512 MB): 8 sec
8.0.2 (1 GB): 8-9 sec (can't measure sub second intervalls, I think both 8.0.2 tests are identical)
I'm reverting to 8.0.1 after just minutes. Worked with Notes for over 10 years and 8.0.2 is the worst build I've ever installed.
1) Error - An internal error occurred during: "Feed Reader Background Polling Job". This error occurs approximately 5-10times each second (no, not minute)
2) Another error related to the above, the UI didn't allow me to copy it.
3) Email framesets completely blank when re-opening existing tab. Closing that tab and re-opening it resolves the issue but it's a deployment stopper for me. My other test users confirmed this issue on their install.
4) notes2w.exe running at >90% CPU - Guessing this is related to the logging of errors 1&2. This makes the machine completely unusable.
Maybe I'll have more success with the 8.5 beta.
@Christian, wow Notes8 on 512MB, that's ambitious. Good to see it works ok for you though...
Now working on a clean install of 8.0.2, 2hrs lost "upgrading".
Performance is markedly improved, approaching that of R7 (if we ignore initial load times).
@Stuart:
It was a test machine to measure the behaviour of Notes 8.0.2 when it is not in HW wonderland :-)
@Ben:
At the first start after upgrade from 8.0.1 to 8.0.2 Lotus Notes hanged. After 15 minutes waiting for recovery, I killed Notes. After that, Notes does response as reported (in Regard of start-up time)
@Christian:
Thanks, it seems I am not alone with the upgrade issues. A Twitter search for 8.0.2 confirmed some others were affected.
@Ben, you were just the loudest ;-)
@Stuart - I describe myself as "verbose" :OP
