MSI Netbooks:
"Third, and saddest, is the fact that a lot of netbooks get returned, many more than is the case with regular-sized laptops. This is a general trend, but hidden within the numbers is a surprise -- people hate Linux. Tung:
Our internal research has shown that the return of netbooks is higher than regular notebooks, but the main cause of that is Linux. People would love to pay $299 or $399 but they don’t know what they get until they open the box. They start playing around with Linux and start realizing that it’s not what they are used to. They don’t want to spend time to learn it so they bring it back to the store. The return rate is at least four times higher for Linux netbooks than Windows XP netbooks.

Frank, that may be the case for a lot of people. I have found that "simple" Internet users like Ubuntu. They would like it even more if it would not be brown. But the good thing about Ubuntu is that it is very focused on the task. There is not too much choice and you know which program you need to run for a certain task.
If you have used XP for years, and you like it, then you will probably not like Ubuntu. That is why Asus and the other vendors started shipping Windows with their Netbooks. I would however get the Linux version for myself. If I could not afford a Mac. :-)
Volker,
I agree with you, I've just for playing around an old HP NC6000 running with Ubuntu 8.0.4, which is fine for me as a simple internet device on the couch. However I can also imagine that people don't like the change from XP as a lot of things are different than within Windows; as long as you don't expect to get Windows however that is not an issue.
Cheers,
Frank
Just installed Ubuntu EEE and it's finde and works out-of-the-box on my EEE 701. Well, for me, it's perfect! :)
