New hardware coming up at vowe's magic flying circus

There is a bunch of hardware heading my way, most of which I can't talk about since it is yet unreleased. There will be a dual band router, a 3.5g router, and as of today the OPTION GlobeSurfer III:
I have received their press release today and asked for a test sample that should arrive by the end of the week. I will be connecting one LAN to the internet with this device for a week and let you know how it goes.
The GlobeSurfer combines a Qualcomm UMTS/HSPA chipset with a small router, that has two Ethernet and one USB port. It can serve as the hub for a mobile office, connecting PCs through Ethernet or Wi-Fi to a 3.5G wireless network. The chipset provides not only HSDPA with up to 7.2 MBit downlink but also HSUPA with up to 5.76 MBit uplink. Everything is contained within the device, including the SIM card. You just need power to set up your office. The screen will also display incoming SMS message. Imagine a mobile phone combined with an Internet access router.

How is the billing for the UMTS SIM card done? What type of service contract is needed?

Ragnar, die Rechnung kommt von Deinem Mobilfunkbetreiber. Von dem kriegst Du auch die SIM. Und den Vertrag, in dem drin steht, was Du zu bezahlen hast.
Götz, das weiß ich noch nicht. Werde ich aber fragen.
Hört sich gut an - ich bastele das im Moment noch mit einem Windows-Notebook mit WLAN und W&W UMTS Stick:
- WLAN in den Peer2Peer Modus konfigurieren
- UMTS Stick/Verbindung sharen ("Internetverbindung freigeben" - setzt technisch ein Routing vom WLAN-"Bein" auf das UMTS-"Bein")
e voila, man kann mit beliebigen anderen WLAN Devices (insbesondere mit meinem "arme Leute iPhone" ;-) ins Internet.
Wenn dieser Option Router funktioniert und kleiner 100 € kostet, ist das wohl ein Ding, was man einfach in der Schublade liegen haben möchte.
PS: upps, ich war wohl etwas naiv was den Preis angeht: Option GlobeSurfer III, ab 325,- €
dann doch eher der von Linksys
Da braucht man aber noch das UMTS-Modem dazu, nicht wahr?
joup, und es geht auch nicht jede PC-Card, aber im Ganzen doch deutlich günstiger. Gebrauchte UMTS-Modems als PC-Card gibt es bei ebay zu hauf. Für 116,90 EUR hole ich gleich ein Linksys bei cyberport ab.

der GlobeSurfer ist bei uns (novamedia.de) auf Lager. Einige Interessante Details: Er kann Firmwareupdates automatisch einspielen, puffert aber die alte Firmware. Wenn das Upate schiefgehen sollte, ist er trotzdem gleich wieder einsatzbereit, ohne Daten verloren zu haben.
Er kann als DLS-Ausfallsicherung dienen. Er erkennt z.B. dass eine DSL-Leitung unterbrochen ist und übernimmt automatisch die Verbindung. Wenn die DSL-Leitung wieder online ist, baut er die Mobilfunkverbindung ab.
Er erlaubt das normale telefonieren über die Mobilfunkkarte mit einem angeschlossenen Telefon oder auch über DECT, wenn die Basisstation angeschlossen wird.
Und er kann im lokalen Netz über eingehende SMS-Nachrichten informieren, über den Webbrowser können die dann verwaltet werden.
