IBM needs your help

But you heard about the videos before. Oh, and here is the free signature. Yup, IBM is still using GIF as the Notes default.

Comments

Yawn, but I like the signature!

Are they punch cards in the picture?

What makes me wonder is, nobody out in the free wild ever likes the stuff. Everybody rants about the marketing. BP's around the planet just turn their eyes skywards when something like that comes up again and again and again.
Even IBMers tell you that IBM marketing is just ....
But IBM does not hear the comments. They just ignore what some really clever people have to say. Why on earth can't they just stop doing it. They must live on another planet. One IBMer told me - no joke - that everybody must first be bluewashed at IBM. Could they just overdo it a bit?

Well, of course they have to be GIF, as the Notes client doesn't support PNG and JPEG is lossy. And you want to make sure that everyone gets 100% of your marketing message.

On the Gif comment, Gif also allows for the best compression with black and white images. ;) I would personally use GIF for signature as well as opposed to JPEG.

"The GIF format is one of the most popular formats on the Internet. Not only is the format excellent at compressing areas of images with large areas of the same color, but it is also the only option for putting animation online (unless you want to use Flash or other vector-based animation formats, which typically cost more). The GIF89a format also supports transparency, and interlacing."

Although, PNG could be optimized for optimal compression as well. Only if PNG was available, but that's another discussion for another time.

Oops! Apologies for 'too many 'anothers' and optimal'..Where's the edit button?

Bilal Jaffery, 2009-05-07

Bilal, Notes isn't that smart.

The messages were converted by the router on D25DBW07/25/A/IBM (d25dbw07.mkm.can.ibm.com) which apparently runs Domino 7.0.3FP1 and renders everything as GIF.

The "edit button" is on the comment preview page.

Smart by fluke? ;)
