It no longer goes to eleven

That was a very brief encounter. The Boombox is dead.

I ran into a small problem. Do you remember how I said it's too early to tell how the Boombox sounds? The reason I was so cautious is that there were noticeable distortions even at medium sound levels. So I started looking for firmware updates. Now you know where this is going.

My Boombox was running the initial firmware 2.2.9. In version 2.3.3 there was an important fix:

USB Playback Distortion

When playing digital audio files from an Apple iPod or iPhone, a USB flash drive, or a external USB hard disk drive, audio distortion and clipping can occur if the program material was mastered at a high level. The distortion is not related to the final power amplifier and speaker volume level.

That's it. Need to upgrade. Downloaded the new firmware and followed the instructions to the minute. When the Boombox asks "SURE!?" I hit OK. That was the last time the Boombox talked to me.

Looking further in the change log, I find this:

Improved Firmware Upgrade Protection

Under some circumstances, it was possible for the firmware upgrade to fail, resulting in an unusable product. New protections are in place to insure that the firmware upgrade will complete successfully.

Looks like I hit one of these circumstances. Time to put the Boombox back into the box and have it picked up. It was really nice knowing you.

Wow.

This one won the editor-refuses-to-give-it-back-alive award.

You will need to update the FAQ. TDK can't consider themselves warned yet.

"Last year the TDK brand was resurrected."

Guess someone forgot to tell the engineers :)

Interessant auch die Hinweise zum iTunes-Update von heute: "iTunes 10.5.2 includes several improvements for iTunes Match and fixes an audio distortion problem when playing or importing certain CDs."

Audioverzerrung?

Volker Weber, 2011-12-13

Hast Du das hier gesehen?

Olav Brinkmann, 2011-12-13

Nein, das hatte ich nicht. Und dann habe ich das probiert. Dreimal.

Danke, Olaf.
